There was once a lonely girl who desired love very much. One day, while she was walking in the woods, she found two starving(挨饿)songbirds. She took them home and put them in a small cage. She cared for them with love and the birds grew stronger and stronger. Every morning, they greeted her with a wonderful song. The girl felt great love from the birds.
One day, the girl found that the cage door was open. The larger and stronger bird flew out of the cage and landed on it. Being afraid of the bird’s flying away, she rushed to grasp him tightly. She was wild with joy at her success in catching him. Suddenly she found the bird didn't move. She opened her hands and stared in horror at the dead bird. She realized that it was her love that killed the bird.
Then, she noticed the other bird moving back and forth in the cage. She could feel his great need for freedom. He wanted to fly into the blue sky. So she lifted him and tossed him softly into the air. The bird circled once, twice, three times...
The girl watched delightedly at the bird's enjoyment. She was no longer concerned with her loss. She wanted the bird to be happy. Suddenly, the bird flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder. He sang the sweetest melody (乐曲) that she had ever heard.
The fastest way to lose love is to hold on to it, while the best way to keep love is to let go.

An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people
together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem arose in New York , where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.
As Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.
28.What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?
A. To invite authors to guide readers
B. To encourage people to read and share.
C. To involve people in community service
D. To promote the friendship between cities.
29.Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?
A. They had little interest in reading.
B. They were too busy to read a book.
C. They came from many different backgrounds.
D. They lacked support from the local government.
30.According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?
A. In large communities with little sense of unity
B. In large cities where libraries are far from home
C. In medium-sized cities with a diverse population
D. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached
31.According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by .
A.the careful selection of a proper book
B. the growing popularity of the writers
C. the number of people who benefit from reading
D. the number of books that each person reads
D
Maya's grandparents planned a trip to India, and when Maya's grandfather passes away, her grandmother, Naniamma, still wants to go. Maya's parents don't think she should go alone. Naniamma not only wants to go to India, but she persuades Maya and her sister, Zara, to go with her without their parents' permission.
Although most of Maya's family is Pakistani, her grandmother explains that she was born in India, and was the only survivor when her family made an unlucky attempt to leave India. Naniamma wants to return to her childhood home and discover an important treasure, but what starts out as a very simple task for her, Maya and Zara ends up being a terrible experience.
I appreciated some of Maya's journal entries (分录) included in " A Ticket to India" . Readers get to learn interesting facts about the places she visits and the things she sees. There is also a list of foreign terms at the end of the book.
Even though I enjoyed " A Ticket to India" greatly because there was lots of action and adventure, I have a bit of trouble with the storyline. First, I thought some parts were unbelievable; the task that Maya was left to do seemed too difficult for a young girl on her own. Second, part of the storyline was about Maya's grandparents' difficulties in getting visas for the trip to India. But, when Maya and her sister were included in the trip at the last minute, there was no mention of them having to have visas. If they needed visas, how did they get them so easily? Maybe the copy I read was a special reader's copy, which is an uncorrected proof (未经校对的样稿).
All in all, this is a very good book that is well worth reading.
32. From this passage, we know that Maya's grandparents ________.
A. didn't like India B. came to Pakistan from India
C. had strange hobbies D. didn't like traveling
33. What does the author think of the novels storyline?
A. Common. B. Simple. C. Exciting. D. Questionable.
34. It can be learned from the passage that ________.
A. the copy the author read was an uncorrected proof
B. it was difficult for Maya to get a visa to India
C. it was hard for Maya's grandparents to get visas
D. the family of Maya moved to India together
35 In the last paragraph, the author suggests that ________.
A. we should read the journal B. the novel is kind of adventurous
C. we should spend more time reading D. the novel is difficult to read

Last summer over 12,000 fans were at Wembley Arena in London, shouting and cheering. Thousands more were watching online. (36) It was esports, or competitive computer gaming.

(39) And they will be an official medal sport in the Asian Games starting from 2022. Next step: the Olympics?
For many esports fans and players, though, the most important thing is that esports are growing in popularity and importance. (40)
A. But are esports really sports?
B. All like playing computer games.
C. It’s not easy being a professional gamer, though.
D. But this wasn't a football, basketball or tennis match.
E. It is certain that esports will come into the 2024 Olympics.
F. In fact, China and South Korea do classify esports as sports.

第二节 书面表达(25分)
Dear Sir/Madame,
I'm Li Hua, a high school student from Beijing. Interested in the 2022 Winter Olympics, I'm writing to apply to be a volunteer in the games.
I feel I have the necessary qualifications and experience needed for the voluntary job. Above all, I'm a fluent English speaker so that I have no difficulty communicating with the visitors. Besides, keen on sports, I'm quite familiar with different events and the locations of the venues as a local. Equally importantly, I previously served as a volunteer several times, which is also an advantage over other candidates. As a warm-hearted teenager, I do believe I can do the job well if I'm granted a chance.
Any favourite consideration of my application or a personal interview would be appreciated.
I'm looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
