Island of Feelings
Once upon a time there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all the others, including Love.
One day it was announced to all of the feelings that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean. So all the feelings prepared their boats to leave.
Love was the only one that stayed. She wanted to preserve the island paradise until the last possible moment.
When the island was almost totally under, Love decided it was time to leave.
She began looking for someone to ask for help. Just then Richness was passing by in a grand boat. Love asked, “Richness, can I come with you on your boat?”
Richness answered, “I’m sorry, but there is a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere.”
Then Love decided to ask Vanity for help who was passing by in a beautiful vessel. Love cried out, “Vanity, help me please!” “I can’t help you,” Vanity said, “You are all wet and will
damage my beautiful boat.”
Next, Love saw Sadness passing by. Love said, “Sadness, please let me go with you.”
Sadness answered, “Love, I’m sorry, but, I just need to be alone now.”
Then, Love saw Happiness. Love cried out, “Happiness, please take me with you.” But Happiness was so overjoyed that he didn’t hear Love calling to him.
Love began to cry. Then, she heard a voice say, “Come Love, I will take you with me.” It was an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that she forgot to ask the elder his name. When they arrived on land the elder went on his way. Love realized how much she owed the elder.
Love then found Knowledge and asked, “Who was it that helped me?” “It was Time,” Knowledge answered. “But why did Time help me when no one else would?” Love asked.
Knowledge smiled and with deep wisdom and sincerity, answered, “Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is.”

22.Which one is both clever and honest?
A. Knowledge B. Time C. Love D. Happiness
23.Which one is the greatest according to the passage?
A. Knowledge B. Time C. Love D. Happiness

Organic food is very popular. It is also expensive. Some organic food costs twice as much as non-organic food, but new parents and pet owners are willing to pay up to 200% more for organic food. However, there are people who think it is a waste of money.
There is one main difference between organic and non-organic food. Organic farms do not use agricultural chemicals, such as pesticides (杀虫剂). In many countries organic foods have special labels. These guarantee that the products are natural.
Some people think organic means locally grown. Originally this was true. Over time organic farming became more difficult. The demand for organic food grew larger than the supply. Small companies had to sell out to large companies. There weren't enough organic ingredients (原料), such as grain and cattle. This made it difficult for many organic companies to stay in business. Today, many large companies have an organic line of products.
Is organic food more nutritious? This is part of the debate. Many farmers and consumers believe it is. They think agricultural chemicals cause health problems such as cancer. Many health professionals disagree. Few studies prove that organic foods prevent health problems. Health specialists worry more about bacteria (病毒), such as E.coli and salmonella. These can get into contact with organic and non- organic food. Doctors recommend washing produce very carefully. Handling meat carefully is important too.
Most people agree that naturally grown food tastes better. Is tastier food worth the extra money? This is a matter of opinion. Whether it is healthier or not may require more research. However, organic consumers argue it is better to be safe than sorry.
24 What is probably the major concern of organic food consumers?
A. Price. B. Safety. C. Freshness. D. Variety.
25. What is the doctors' suggestion?
A. Grow your own food. B. Reduce the use of pesticides.
C. Make sure the food is clean. D. Buy large companies' products.
26. Which of the following do most people agree on organic food?
A. It tastes better. B. It is easier to grow.
C. It contains more fat. D. It is more nutritious.

Whenever she was having a tough day, Selena Berry would look at the sky and imagine herself, flying high in the clouds above her troubled neighborhood and challenging school life. "Flying makes you feel big, "Betty said. "You’re on top of everything. You look down and all you see is the view, the beauty. "
This summer, Berry and seven other African-American students in the Chicago area participated in a program to learn how to fly. The program is new and challenging for participants. In the end, successful students will graduate with a private pilot’s license.
The unique program is called Tuskegee Next. "It is a special effort to increase the number of African-Americans who can work as pilots. "said Stephen L. Davis, who owns a big company Wheaton , lllinois and founded the organization. The main mission of the group is to help students follow in the footsteps of the country’s first black military pilot Tuskegee. It costs about $25, 000 to take the lessons and pay for the flying time. But it is free for these students. Davis donates his
own money and raises funds to cover the costs.
For much of his early life, Davis wanted to become a pilot. But growing up, he could not afford the expensive schooling. By the time he could afford lessons, he had a wife and children and did not want to take the risk. For the students, the benefits of learning to fly are greater than being pilots. "When you don’t see black pilots, you don’t think you can do it, he said. "Even if these kids don’t become pilots, learning to fly will give them confidence to do other great things. "
Tuskegee Next targets African-American teenagers from rough communities who might never have such a chance. The experience will change their lives and let them see a happy future. Some of the students in the program will receive a small stipend, which makes up for the summer jobs they would have otherwise.
All eight of the students have passed the written exam. Now they are spending hours piloting a Cessna airplane with an instructor. Some are already flying the planes alone. On a recent sunny afternoon, 20-year-old Quiana White spent about an hour alone in a Cessna airplane practicing turns. This was her first solo flight and her classmates crowded around her after she landed. "You’re not the same person once you go up on your own, "she said. "No matter what happens, I know I’m a pilot. "

How does an ecosystem (生态系统) work? What makes the population of different species the way they are? Why are there so many flies and so few wolves? To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical, models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats.
With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator(掠食动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物), the two species are strongly linked;when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction(灭绝)of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows to original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.
Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species-including species they did not directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. Prevention is key, scientists say, because once ecosystems pass their tipping point(临界点), it is remarkably difficult for them to return.
31. What have scientists discovered with the help of mathematical of food webs?
A. The living habits of species in food webs.
B. The rules governing food webs of the ecosystems.
C. The approaches to studying the species in the ecosystems.
D. The differences between weak and strong links in food webs.
32. A strong link is found between two species when a predator______.
A. has a wide food choice.
B. can easily find new prey.
C. sticks to one prey species
D. can quickly move to another place
33. What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline?
A. The prey species they directly attack will die out.
B. The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators.
C. The living environment of other species will remain unchanged.
D. The population of other species will experience unexpected changes.
34. What conclusion can be drawn from the examples in Paragraph 4?
A. Uncontrolled human activities greatly upset ecosystems.
B. Rapid economic development threatens animal habitats.
C. Species of commercial value dominate other species.
D. Industrial activities help keep food webs stable.
35. How does an early-warning system help us maintain the ecological balance?
A. By getting illegal practices under control.
B. By stopping us from killing large predators.
C. By bringing the broken-down ecosystems back to normal.
D. By signaling the urgent need for taking preventive action.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Some people are so rude. Who sends an email or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on the
Internet? __36__
Maybe I'm the rude one for not appreciating life's little courtesies (礼节). But many social norms (规范) just don't make sense to people drowning in digital communication.
Take the thankyou note. Daniel Post Senning, a coauthor of Emily Post's Etiquette, asked, “At what point does showing appreciation outweigh the cost?”
__37__ Think of how long it takes to listen to one of those messages. In texts, you don't have to declare who you are or even say hello. Email, too, is slower than a text. The worst are those who leave a voice mail and then send an email message to tell you they left a voice mail.
This isn't the first time technology has changed our manners. _38__ Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor, suggested that people say, “Ahoy!” Finally, hello won out, and the victory sped up the greeting's use in face-to-face communications.
In the age of the smart phone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business's phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, or an office, which can be easily found on a digital map. __39__ And when you answer, they respond with a thankyou email.
How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thankyou message. __40__ In traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here's hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that timewasting forms of communication do.
A.Then there is voice mail.
B.Others, like me, want no reply.
C.But people still ask these things.
D.Don't these people realize that they're wasting your time?
E.Won't new technology bring about changes in our daily life?
F.Facetoface communication makes comprehension much easier.
G.When the telephone was invented, people didn't know how to greet a caller.

第二节:读后续写(满分20分)
Tim recently graduated from the university and was looking for a job. After searching on the Internet he found out that a famous online business company is recruiting a new office manager. Many candidates applied for the entry exam ,but only one would be accepted in the end. Tim noticed the resumes (简历) of other candidates and was surprised to see that some of them held a Master’s Degree or even a Doctor’s Degree. But Tim was only a Bachelor, and barely met the lowest requirement of the diploma. Tim felt a bit frustrated because he had no advantage over other candidates who were excellent students. All the candidates entered the exam hall after handing up their resumes. Tim scanned through the pages of the test paper and found out that the questions were very difficult for him. Tim tried to calm down and focus on the questions themselves instead of their difficulty level. He started with the easiest ones and moved on to the
more difficult ones slowly.
There were two invigilators (监考人) in the hall ,one of them was tall and thin ,while the other invigilator was of the opposite: he was short and fat. They seemed to be quite confident about the honesty of the candidates and were absent. After about 10 minutes ,one of the invigilators left to answer a phone call. The other invigilator soon went out too.
The atmosphere in the exam hall changed after the invigilators had left. Some of the candidates took out notes and books ,some of them brought tablets to search for answers ,and some even called others for help. Tim looked back ,and he saw the candidate sitting behind him cheating too. The man winked to Tim ,as if telling him to cheat in the test because everyone was doing so Tim shook his head and continued doing the difficult problems at a slow pace.
In about half an hour ,the invigilators returned to the exam hall. Tim still had one question left blank at the end of the test. He was almost sure that he was not going to be accepted.

W: Yes, it is. And she’s always telling us not to forget our Indian culture. So, next year, my sisters and I are planning on traveling to India with her for a few months, so that we can all experience the culture together.
M: I think that’s a wonderful idea. She’ll be so happy!

M: Hello, I’m a new student on Economics. Can I know some information about the courses?
W: Well, I lecture on that program. What do you need to know?
M: I’d like to know how many lectures a week I have to attend?
W: Two lectures a week, on Tuesday and Thursday. Besides, there’s one group discussion every
Friday.
M: So what time?
W: Let me see …You should have known this information yesterday, at the meeting for the new students.
M: Oh, was there a meeting yesterday? I didn’t know about that …no one mentioned…
W: Never mind. Now lectures are at four in the afternoon.
M: Four’s bit late. I’ve got a part time job that starts at four thirty.
W: Well, but attendance at lectures is necessary. We expect at least 80% attendance at this university, you know.
M: 80%! That’s high.
W: But I’m afraid you have to meet that requirement, otherwise, you can’t get enough credits to graduate. And what’s more, if you want to earn the scholarship, 90% attendance rate or above is
a must.
M: Ok, I see. Thank you for your information.
W: You’re welcome.

I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can’t imagine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can’t get around without one because there isn’t any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don’t have a car, you’d better live in the city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that’s one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.
