According to a recent study published in Royal Society Open Science, there are other factors for reaching elite (最优秀的) levels of ability.‎ The researchers set out to replicate (复制) the process of a now-famous 1993 study of top-level violinists and pianists. On average, the earlier study found that top-ranked musicians had clocked over 10,000 hours of practice by the age of 20. It believed their success was due to the hours spent practicing, not because of natural talent, learning skills and other factors.‎ Author Malcolm Gladwell called 10,000 hours “the magic number of greatness”.‎ Questioning this conclusion, Brooke Macnamara and Megha Maitra, from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, US, sought volunteers to put the 10,000-hour rule to the test.‎ The pair organized violinists into three groups, based on whether their tutors rated them as the best players, good players, or average players. They were then told to record how long they practiced every week.‎ They found that the “average” players had around 6,000 hours of practice. However, there was little separating the good from the best musicians. Both groups had approximately 11,000 hours of practice by the age of 20.‎ ‎“Once you get to the highly skilled groups, practice stops accounting for the difference,” Macnamara told the Guardian. “Smaller factors then determine who goes on to that super-elite level.”‎ ‎“The factors depend on the skill being learned: in chess it could be intelligence or working memory, in sport it may be how efficiently a person uses oxygen,” she said. She also pointed out the factor of motivation and the interactions of different factors.‎ It should be said that neither side discounts the value of making an effort. Even if you aren’t destined (命中注定的) to be the world’s greatest violinist, practice will make you a little bit better than you were yesterday.‎ ‎21.What can we learn from the 1993 study?‎ A.The 10,000-hour rule applies to everything.‎ B.Practice is the key to mastering a skill.‎ C.Natural talent is particularly important for musicians.‎ D.It’s better to learn an instrument at a young age.‎ ‎22.What did the study by Macnamara and Maitra find?‎ A.The three groups of violinists varied a lot in their practice times.‎ B.The mastering of different skills required different hours of practice.‎ C.Motivation and talent determined whether one could become an elite violinist.‎ D.Practice time didn’t make much difference between “the best” and “good” violinists.‎ ‎23.The underlined word “discounts” probably means ______.‎ A.ignores B.proves C.recognizes D.considers B A hybrid electric vehicle (混合动力车) or HEV is a vehicle driven by the combination of petrol engine and electric motor. Terrence has been driving a HEV for five years. He really doesn’t understand why more people aren’t accepting them. “I probably spend about $ 7 a day on petrol,” the taxi driver told news. com. au. In his previous conventional vehicle Terrence said he ‎ was spending up to $ 30 a day on petrol, meaning he saves almost $ 6000 every year.‎ The Toyota spokesman said this was quite a high saving and official tests estimate (估计) an average driver would only save about 33 percent off their current bill. This means a driver paying $ 30 a day on petrol would see their bill drop to about $ 20 using the hybrid. “A taxi driver that drives in built-up areas and spends little time on highways will notice a higher fuel saving,” he said. “Low speeds allow the electric motors to be used more and the petrol engine used less.”‎ While some people are skeptical about how reliable hybrids are, Terrence said he had never run out of power. His Camry cost about $ 34,000 and so after five years, it’s nearly paid for itself. “For cab drivers, it’s a real advantage because of the cost-effectiveness,” he said. Terrence has no complaints about the car. “I love it, the calm and quietness of it, the simplicity of it—you just jump in and go. The maintenance(保养)is really low. But the only difficulty is finding someone to service the car as there are not many experienced mechanics(机修工).”‎ Terrence said it’s “extraordinary” that more drivers aren’t buying more hybrid electric vehicles and that governments are not encouraging this more. “I think people have a view that you have to plug it in, which is not true. A lack of information about the cars may be stopping people from taking the plunge. It’s not promoted at all for the public to understand—it’s simplifying the actual owning of a car—you don’t have to do so many things to own it and run it, it’s just so much simpler. Why wouldn’t the government promote such a thing?”‎ ‎24.How much does an average driver save each day by driving a hybrid, according to the Toyota spokesman?‎ A.$ 30 B.$ 20‎ C.$ 10 D.$ 7‎ ‎25.Terrence’s problem with his HEV at the moment is about the ________.‎ A.speed B.power C.price D.service ‎26.When saying “extraordinary”, Terrence thinks it is ________.‎ A.understandable B.wonderful C.doubtful D.unbelievable ‎27.What does Terrence think prevent the popularity of hybrid cars?‎ A.The difficulty in servicing the car. B.The restriction of the government.‎ C.The lack of information about HEV. D.The inconvenience with charging the car.‎ C In my career as an educator and health care provider, I have worked with numerous children infected with AIDS. The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life. They have taught me so many things, but I have especially learned that great courage can be found in the smallest of packages. Let me tell you about Tyler.‎ Tyler was born infected with HIV; his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medication to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein(血管) in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back. Medications were fastened to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed extra oxygen to support his breathing.‎ Tyler wasn’t willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicine backpack. All of us were surprised at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him. Tyler’s mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast that she needed to dress him in red. That way, she could quickly spot him.‎ This terrible disease eventually wore down Tyler. He grew quite ill and, unfortunately, so did his HIV-infected mother. When it became apparent that he wasn’t going to survive, Tyler’s mom talked to him about death. She comforted him by telling Tyler that she was dying too, and that he would be with him soon in heaven.‎ A few days before his death, Tyler signed me over to his hospital bed and whispered, ‘‘I might die soon. I’m not scared. When I die, please dress me in red. Mom promised she’s coming to heaven, too. I’ll be playing when she gets there, and I want to make sure she can find me. ‘‘‎ ‎28.What does the writer think of his/her work according to Paragraph 1?‎ A.It’s impressive. Researchers reported their findings in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.‎ Christine Ambrosone is the head of cancer prevention and control at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York. She said, “From this study and others in the literature, it seems that it may not be wise to take supplements during chemotherapy.”‎ ‎“It’s thought that antioxidants might interfere with the ability of chemotherapy to kill cancer cells,” Ambrosone said.‎ Some doctors have been advising patients for a number of years not to take antioxidants during chemotherapy. “But there was no strong empirical data for that recommendation,” Ambrosone said.‎ So, Ambrosone and other researchers decided to study whether supplement use might affect chemotherapy’s effectiveness. They looked for evidence in an earlier study on diet, exercise, lifestyle and cancer results.‎ In the earlier research, people who took part were asked about their use of supplements at the beginning of and during treatment, and about their lifestyle, diet and exercise. The researchers studied 1,134 patients who filled out the surveys and followed them for a median of six years.‎ The researchers searched for possibilities that might increase the risk of the disease reappearing or of death. They found that patients who took any supplements at the beginning of ‎ and during chemotherapy were 41 percent more likely to have their breast cancer return than those who did not. In addition, the supplement takers were 40 percent more likely to die later on compared to patients using no supplements. The supplements included vitamin A, C and E. Those taking vitamin B12 and iron supplements were at greater risk of cancer returning, the researchers said.‎ ‎32.Why did Ambrosone and other researchers conduct the study?‎ A.To know about the patients’ lifestyle.‎ B.To seek evidence for the recommendation.‎ C.To see whether patients take supplements.‎ D.To examine chemotherapy’s effectiveness.‎ ‎33.The researchers discovered the risks of taking additional supplements by .‎ A.giving examples B.analyzing causes C.making a comparison D.listing figures ‎34.What can we know from this passage?‎ A.Taking vitamins may increase the risk of breast cancer.‎ B.Ambrosone is the first one to warn patients off taking antioxidants.‎ C.Antioxidants may increase the ability of chemotherapy to kill cancer cells.‎ D.Patients may face more dangers if taking supplements during chemotherapy.‎ ‎35.What section of a newspaper is most likely to have this article?‎ A.Health. B.Entertainment.‎ C.Education. D.Technology.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ BE A GOOD TOURIST Tourism can be both good and bad. Yes, it brings in money for the local economy and creates lots of jobs for locals, but it may also bring some problems.‎ ‎36. Tourists have used paint, rocks, or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, memorial stones at the bottom of Qomolangma, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourists sites are being destroyed by tourists who “love ‎ them to death”.37. If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. Pass kindness along to future generations, not destruction.‎ Another big problem in some places has been tourists disturbing the local people and life. 38. For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries and other public areas, taking pictures of students and disturbing their studies. I have three words for tourists like this: please be considerate. 39.‎ The number of problems from tourists is endless: walking in large groups without considering others who need to walk by, crossing roads without observing local traffic laws, and many more. The only way to solve the issue of the terrible tourist is to make sure that you are not one! 40. Remember, whenever you step outside your country’s borders, you are representing your country to the rest of the world.‎ A.Just think from other aspects.‎ B.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.‎ C.Have fun in a way that does not disturb others.‎ D.Be the best, kindest, most polite tourist possible.‎ E.
