第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

Rachel Hore’s fascinating novels move between the past and the present. Her latest The House on Bellevue Gardens is set in London now and in the early 1960s.
Best-selling author Rachel Hore’s previous novels include The Glass Painter’s Daughter, which was shortlisted(入围) for the 2010 Romantic Novel of the Year award, and A Gathering Storm, which was shortlisted for the 2012 Historical Novel of the Year award.
Here, she shares three books that made an impact on her life.
Orlando
by Virginia Woolf
Reading Orlando for the first time in my late teens gave me a wonderful sense of freedom and the possibilities that a life full of books can offer. Forever young, Orlando possesses “the
strength of a man and a woman’s grace”.
He lives through four centuries and has many disguises; sometimes he even changes his gender.
It was an excellent literary work through history that excited and inspired me.
Flight Behaviour
by Barbara Kingsolver
I’ve read many of Barbara Kingsolver’s novels, including her well-known The Poisonwood Bible, admiring how easily she writes about the power and beauty of the natural world, of which humanity is a dependent part.
I particularly love Flight Behaviour because she engages the reader easily with an ambitious subject for fiction — climate change.
Her story makes us all care about what we are doing to our world.
The Hawk in the Rain
by Ted Hughes
We were given The Thought Fox to read at school and I was so deeply impressed with its central image of the fox in the snow inspiring the poem that I spent that week’s money on the book it appears in. I read and re-read it and was amazed!
I loved the writer’s technique of description, as well as the energy, the violence and the sensuousness (敏感) of those poems.
Everyone should have their ‘discovery of poetry’ moment, and mine was Ted Hughes.
21. Which of the following books was shortlisted for the 2012 Historical Novel of the Year award?
A. The House on Bellevue Gardens. B. The Glass Painter’s Daughter.
C. A Gathering Storm. D. Flight Behaviour.
22. Which book did Rachel Hore read when she was in her late teens?
A. Flight Behaviour. B. Orlando.
C. The Poisonwood Bible. D. The Hawk in the Rain.
23. For what does Rachel Hore admire Barbara Kingsolver?
A. The topic of her novel.
B. How she writes about the power and beauty of the natural world.
C. How her novels excite and inspire readers.
D. Her technique of description.

It has always been thought that when it comes to tornadoes (龙卷风), the most peaceful place is the centre: the eye of the storm. But a photo taken this week in the small Canadian town of Three Hills, Alberta, suggests that there is perhaps no place more peaceful than inside the calm mind of Theunis Wessels.
It all started when Mr Wessels’ wife, Cecilia, was warned by their nine-year-old daughter that he was cutting grass in their yard when a violent tornado appeared in the distance. When her husband refused to come inside, saying it was moving away from them, Mrs Wessels took a photo to show her parents the storm. The photo, which has been shared widely on social media, is a masterclass in calmness.
In it, the sockless Mr Wessels, dressed casually in summer shorts and sunglasses, is seen never being upset by the disastrous column of cloud. “I took the picture just to show my mum and dad in South Africa, ‘Look, there’s a tornado,’ and now everyone is like, Why is your husband cutting the grass?” Cecilia told the Times Colonist.
When asked later about the tornado’s approach to him, Mr Wessels responded, “I was keeping an eye on it,” seeming as cool as his gardening style and attracting more than a little respect. “Alberta, Canada,” wrote one admiring Twitter user, “where men face the elements and do what needs to be done.” A writer for Esquire magazine struck a pensive note: “I can understand Theunis,” Peter Wade admitted, “sometimes when the world is raging (肆虐) outside, the only thing you can do is keep your small area of it.”
24. How is Paragraph one developed?
A. By listing theories. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By making comparisons.
25. Why did Cecilia take the photo?
A. To post it on social media.
B. To record her husband’s heroic act.
C. To inform her parents of the tornado.
D. To prove what is the most peaceful place.
26. Which may make Mr Wessels respected?
A. His way of gardening. B. His calmness in the face of a tornado.
C. His bravery in fighting the tornado. D. His rich knowledge about tornado.
27. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A man ignored a tornado in Canada.
B. There are some features of tornado in Canada.
C. A man survived surprisingly from a tornado.
D.A picture caused heated discussions.

Well, parents, surprise! Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to thumb rides, and not just to school. It’s awkward to be refused when you call a friend and ask for a ride. But with Twitter, you just look for other people heading the same way.
It may sound risky, so many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and don’t branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter just like me, but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern.
“I think the digital connection of young people is really key, because younger generations grew up sharing things on line, sharing files, photos, music, etc, so they’ve been very used to sharing,” said Juliet Schor, a sociology professor at Boston College.
The sharing economy got big during the recession (经济衰退), allowing people to access more goods, services using technology and even to share costs. And that technology, for me, is what the car was for my mom, a gateway to more freedom, like what my friend Earl says, “The symbol of freedom isn’t the car any more because there’s technology out there connecting you to a car.”
According to the researchers at the University of Michigan, 30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver’s license compared to six in ten today. So it’s not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn’t rushing to get a license but an iPhone.
“Driving, for young people, does mean they have to disconnect from their technology, and that’s a negative. So if they could sit in the passage side and still be connected, that’s going to be a plus.” Schor continued.
To me, another plus is that ridesharing represents something, something much bigger than trying to save money. I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to share cups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter.
28. The American teens like me, prefer to possess an iPhone as a birthday gift because .
A. it is most fashionable and cool B. they are bored with driving cars
C. they are fond of being connected D. it is much cheaper than a car
29. We can learn from the text that _______.
A. Twitter is a website for teens to make friends and achieve goals
B. ridesharing can be seen as a sign that people still count on each other
C. driving cars for teens means a plus and connecting with technology
D. having a car and cost-sharing symbolize more freedom for the author’s mother
30. Professor Juliet would agree that _______.
A. young people will sit waiting to be contacted by reading a passage
B. sharing economy is bound to be responsible for the recession
C. young people tend to share a car with strangers by means of Twitter
D. being connected via technology comes first for young people
31. The best title for the passage is probably _______.
A. Twitter, an Awesome Website B. Cars or iPhone
C. Teens Use Twitter to Thumb Rides D. Cool Teens on the Go

Living by the forest may be romantic, but living in a city makes you more attractive to the opposite sex if you are a frog, at least.
Increasingly, recent studies have shown significant differences between urban animals and rural creatures from the same species —and this makes a lot of sense. Mankind is causing dramatic changes over a wide range of environments and many creatures are slowly adapting to urban conditions. Just recently, researchers found that some urban spiders are no longer afraid of lights; now, a new study reports that city life makes male frogs more attractive.
The authors, led by Wouter Halfwerk from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, compared the
“chuck” calls of frogs living in both urban areas and forests near the Panama Canal. Previous research had found that creatures, such as birds, frogs, and grasshoppers sing or call differently in noisy urban areas, but it was unclear what the effects of these changes are.
“Urbanization can cause species to adjust their sexual displays, because the effectiveness of mating signals is influenced by environmental conditions,” researchers write in the study. “Despite many examples that show that mating signals in urban conditions differ from those in rural conditions, we do not know whether these differences provide a combined reproductive and survival benefit.”
Now, researchers found that urban frogs “sing” more often and use more complex calls than their rural counterparts. They then recorded these calls and played them back to female frogs in the lab. They found that 75% of the females were more attracted to the more complex urban calls.
It’s not exactly clear why this happens, though researchers suspect it has a lot to with how safe the environment is. While calling out can help you get a mate, it can also draw in predators. Since cities generally have far fewer predators, frogs are free and safe to let out their sounds. “It definitely shows that if you change the abundance of predators, parasites(寄生虫) and mates, that induces a strong evolutionary response,” says Halfwerk.
32. Which is an example of animals adapting to the urban conditions?
A. The frogs in the city can live longer.
B. Some urban spiders are used to the lights.
C. The female frogs in the city can attract more male frogs.
D. Some creatures in the city begin to increase their calls.
33. The difference of urban creatures is________.
A. helping these animals find partners easily
B. helping these animals survive in the city
C. having no clear conclusion up to now
D. having powerful abilities to give birth
34. Urban frogs are more attractive because of________.
A. the pleasant looks B. their smells
C. the ability to catch pests D. their singing
35. What is the meaning of the underlined word “predators” in paragraph 6?
A. Animals which live on frogs. B. Insects which frogs like to eat.
C. Frogs which have larger size. D. Birds which sing better than rural ones.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The hula hoop(呼啦圈) can date back to around 1000 BC. Originally, the hula hoop was made of dried grapevines(葡萄藤). 36 Although first played for this simple game, the hula hoop has been enjoyed by adults and children for centuries. Various nations worldwide independently created and used it for entertainment purposes throughout history.
37 Sometimes these hoops were also used for military and battle practice. Between 800 and 1500 AD, Native Americans used the hoops as moving targets in order to practice throwing spears and other weapons. Even the British army had a game named “kill the hoop”. However, this practice is not common today.
The more modern version of the hula hoop, which is spun around the waist, was first invented in the 1950s. A plastic hoop created by California’s Wham-O toy company had sold nearly 100 million hula hoops by 1960. 38
Throughout the United States, the hula hoop craze was large and diverse. But by 1980 the use of hula hoops had begun rapidly fading. 39 In both of the countries, circuses and gymnasts took up hula hoping as part of their performances.
Eventually, the hula hoop was introduced into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1999, showing its important place within the entertainment and children’s toy industries. 40 However, methodical and structural advances have allowed for the introduction of hula hoops into various modern entertainment venues for adults as well.
A. It was lighter than the bamboo hoops.
B. This was not the case, however, in China or Russia.
C. It was just thrown and rolled down hills in children’s games.
D. As a combined exercise, it is extremely beneficial to the body.
E. Not all hula hoop games were played for fun and entertainment.
F. This created what was known as the “hula hoop craze” during the 1950s.
G. Today, hula hoping is still common among children as it was during the ancient time.

Dear Peter,
I am glad to learn from your letter that you are going to pay a visit to Xi’an during the
National Day Holiday. I’d like to give my suggestions for your two-day trip here.
On the first day, I highly recommend that you go to see the Terra-cotter Warriors, which looks splendid because it contains various life-sized terra-cotter figures of warriors and horses in memory of the first Emperor of Qin. You can finish the day by taking a walk along the ancient City Wall. This solid wall had remained standing for over one thousand years. Next day, it will be a great delight to visit Xi’an Historical Museum, where you may be thrilled by so many wonderful treasures from different times displayed in the museum.
Remember to wear a mask when sightseeing. I wish you an enjoyable and worthwhile journey!
Yours,
Li Hua
