卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Samuel Osmond is a 19-year-old law student from Cornwall, England. He never
studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical zxxk pieces by
musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He
learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in
his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲)by
Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.
Amazed that he remembered this long and zxxkdifficult piece of music and
played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable .They say his ability is very
rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted
to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he
should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.
Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music.
My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I
suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and
without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear
them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel.
Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a zxxkspecial event at his college.
The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his
amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many
professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently,” It’s all about super
memory---I guess I have that gift.”
However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His
family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story,
and then he could retell the story word for word.
Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the
future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his zxxkstudies.

It was a cold winter day. A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth (收
费站). “I’m paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,” she said with a smile,
handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the
tollbooth were informed, “Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”
It turned out that the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend’s
refrigerator: “Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” The phrase
impressed her so much that she copied it down.
Judy Foreman spotted the same phrase on a warehouse wall far away from
home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back
to copy it down. “I thought it was beautiful,” she said, explaining why she’d taken to
writing it at the bottom of all her letters, “like a message from above.” Her husband,
Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his
students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter.
Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting that though she liked it, she didn’t know
where it came from or what it really meant.
Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne zxxkHerbert, a woman living in Marin.
It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after
turning it around in her mind for days.
“Here’s the idea,” Anne says. “Anything you think there should be more of, do it
randomly.” Her fantasies include painting the classrooms of shabby schools, leaving
hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor part of town, and giving money secretly to a
proud old lady. Anne says, “Kindness can build on itself as much as violence can.”
The acts of random kindness spread. If you were one of those drivers who found
your fare paid, who knows what you might have been inspired to do for someone
else later. Like all great events, kindness begins slowly, with every single act. Let it be
yours!
31. Why did Natalie Smith pay for the six cars behind her?

B. She wanted to show kindness.
C. She hoped to please others.
D. She had seven tickets.

above?
A. Kindness and violence can change the world.

35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. People should practice random kindness to those in need.

C. People should practice random kindness to strangers they meet.
D. People who receive kindness are likely to pay it back to the giver.

Like many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future but with no
real idea of what I wanted to do. My degree, with honors, in English literature had
not really prepared me for anything practical. I knew I wanted to make a difference in
the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That’s when I learned about
the zxxk Lighthouse Project.
I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I
could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard
work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In
short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither
did my family.
Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the
paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations,
I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several
months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty. I would be
going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea.
But I was about to find out.
After completing my training, I was sent to the village that was small and
desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor,
they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family. I was asked
to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year
or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from
my students than they did from me.
Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so
strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get zxxkanywhere with the
local language, and returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse
Project had changed my life forever.

Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流) . Most
do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis
Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way --- by studying movements of random floating
garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in
the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the
shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that
people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or
wear.
Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total
— fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked
if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn't.
Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where
the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot
about the patterns of ocean currents.
The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海滩搜
寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious
beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their
help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected
reliable information on 1, 600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to
test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and
publish the findings zxxkof their study.
As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call
with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even
started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers
from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from
potatoes to golf gloves.

Oseola McCarty spent more than 75 years washing and ironing other people’s

decided to donate $ 150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi.
The money was i … me savings. She could save such a zxxklarge amount of
money because she lived a very simple life. She never learned to drive, and when she
wanted to go somewhere, she just walked. She never flew to anywhere till the
donation(捐助),and in 50 years she had been out of the South only once. The
house in which she lived was also a rather modest one her last uncle left her. Only
after she became known in America did she begin to travel all over the country. Since
then, she had been the subject of many interviews and articles and was even invited
to the White House.

Eating fat foods can be bad for your health, but simply smelling their cooking
smoke might be harmful, too.Scientists reported that at a meeting of the American
Chemical Society in San Francisco.
Some major restaurants have already changed the way they cook as a result of
the research. The findings should also help experts to develop better filtering
technologies to make healthier choices in the kitchen.
People have been cooking food for more than 100,000 years.Chimneys and
windows have already been around since the Dark Ages.Yet , it wasn't until the
mid1990s that scientists started studying the components of cooking smoke and how
that smoke might increase air pollution.
The first study on cooking smoke, carried out about 20 years ago, found that the
most and the dirtiest cooking smoke came from hot hamburgers under high heat.Other
foods followed far behind, including cooked French fries or baked pizza. In the new
study,Kuehn and his colleagues used a new kind of equipment to examine more
exactly the cooking smoke that comes out of a large variety of foods being
cooked. They found that the dirtiest smoke by far came from fried chicken being
cooked with peanut oil.Hot hamburgers came next.
So far, people have kept_a_watchful_eye_on the harm of breathing in cooking
smoke in the world. Many researches on this subject have been carried out in many
countries. As with cigarette smoke, though, the worry is that cooking smoke could get
deep into our lungs , where it might cause cancer or other problems. One study in
China, also more than 10 years ago, found the highest rates of lung cancer in women,
even though men smoked the most cigarettes.Women did more of the cooking there,
and the researchers drew a conclusion that the cooking smoke explained that.

Today on our program ,we'll answer a question from Japan.A listener named
Maki would like to know if the test known as the TOEIC is popular in the United
States. The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication)tests the ability
of people to communicate in the workplace using everyday English.
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton,New Jersey, develops and
administers the TOEIC.It says more than nine thousand organizations use the test in
more than ninety countries. Each year the TOEIC is taken in the United States about
twenty thousand times. So how popular does that make it? Well, consider that last year
the test was given more than five million times worldwide.
Nonnative English speakers take the test to show their English skills. The cost of
the test is set locally in each country. The TOEIC is really two tests.People can take
one or both of them. While one is a paperandpencil test which tests listening and
reading skills, the other test,is given on a computer, testing speaking and writing
skills.Eleven questions on the computer test require speaking.Eight other questions
require written answers, including an opinion essay.
We visited the ETS Web site for more information about the TOEIC.But one of
the first things we saw was a warning against “phishing scams” (钓鱼欺骗) that
use emails , which claim to be from the ETS , to make people lose personal
information or money.Spokeswoman Christine Betaneli advises people to take the
TOEIC to be suspicious of any email claiming to be from the ETS.They should be
especially suspicious of emails that ask for information that they have already
provided for the test.
That's the “Education Zone” for today.I'm Bob Doughty.Thank you for
listening.

At the age of six months babies can sit up.According to psychologists, they have
already developed a moral sense and can tell the difference between good and evil.A
series of experiments is challenging the traditional views of many psychologists and
social scientists that babies are born without a moral sense and that our morality is
shaped by our parents and experiences.Instead, they suggest that the moral sense may
be in the brain at birth.
Professor Paul Bloom,a psychologist at Yale University, said:“A growing body
of evidence suggests that humans do have a moral sense from the very start of
life. With the help of well designed experiments, you can see moral judgment and
moral feeling even in the first year of life.”For one study,Professor Paul Bloom got
babies aged between six months and a year to watch a puppet show in which a
simple, colorful wooden shape with eyes tries to climb a hill.Sometimes the shape is
helped up the hill by a second toy , while other times a third character pushes it
down.In another experiment, the researchers invented a ‘oneact morality play’,
in which a toy dog tries to open a box.The dog is joined by a teddy bear who helps
him lift the lid,and another teddy bear who sits on the box. After watching these
shows several times , the babies showed a strong preference to helpful good
characters—the one who helped to climb the hill and the one who helped to open the
box—and refused unhelpful bad ones. Some babies even gave their own punishment
with a hit on the bad puppet's head.
Although the studies appear to show that morality is hardwired into babies'
brains, some psychologists urged caution.Dr Nadja Reissland said “The babies might
just prefer to see things go up rather than down.In the second test, perhaps the bear
closes the box to prevent the dog from getting in there because there is something
dangerous inside. It is like a mother keeping children out of an area where there is
something harmful.”
36.According to the experiments,at the age of six months babies ________.
A.can sit up by themselves and speak
B.have a sense of good and evil
C.prefer beautiful toys to ugly ones

A.the moral sense is in the brain at birth
B.experiments can improve babies' morality
C.babies' morality is influenced by parents
D.the moral sense is important to babies
【解析 】 细 节 理 解 题 。 根 据 第 一 段 中 的 “A series of experiments is
challenging the traditional views of many psychologists and social scientists that
babies are born without a moral sense and that our morality is shaped by our parents
and experiences.”可知,传统的观点认为,孩子的是非感是受父母和生活经历的
影响而后天形成的。

________.
A.how the dog opened the box

40.What Dr Nadja Reissland said means ________.
A.it's not completely right to say babies are born with a moral sense
B.what the babies did clearly showed that they could make a moral judgment.
C.the babies didn't like the bear just because their mothers didn't like it,either
D.the babies knew that helping someone up the hill is better than pushing him

Happy? Angry? Anxious? How can we measure animals' emotions? A new study
of animals' emotions suggests that,as in humans, emotions can tell animals about how
dangerous their world is,and guide the choices that they make. The article of the study
by Bristol University's Professor Mike Mendl is published online.
An animal living in an environment where it is often threatened by predators will
develop a negative emotion or “mood” , such as anxiety. However , one in an
environment with plenty of opportunities to get resources for survival will be in a
more positive mood state.
The researchers say that these emotional states not only show the animal's
experiences, they also help it decide how to make choices ,especially in unclear
situations, which could have good or bad results. An animal in a negative mood state
will make a safetyfirst,“pessimistic” response to an unclear event—for example,
it considers a noise in the grass as a signal of a predator—while an animal in a
positive mood state will benefit from a more “optimistic” response, considering the
noise as a signal of prey.
Professor Mike Mendl,Head of the Animal Welfare and Behavior research group
at Bristol University's School of Clinical Veterinary Science, said “Because we can
measure animals' choices objectively,we can use ‘optimistic’ and ‘pessimistic’
decisionmaking as a symbol of the animal's emotional state which itself is much
more difficult to assess.Recent studies by our group and others suggest that this is a
meritorious new approach to a variety of animal species.”
“Public interest in animal welfare remains high, with widespread meanings for
the way in which animals are treated, used and included in society. To understand how
animals experience the world and how they should be treated , we need to better
understand their emotional lives.” Mike Mendl said. The researchers believe
Professor Mike Mendl's study can help them to better understand and assess an
animal's emotions.

by several workmates or friends. In addition, the government could improve the public
transport system in order to make it more convenient for people. The government
should also encourage cycling by building more green lanes. This will help save
money, time and energy as well as improve the environment.
第二节 读写任务(共 1 小题;满分 25 分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇 150 词左右的英语短文。
“We are reading the first verse of the first chapter,of a book whose pages are
infinite.”
I do not know who wrote those words , but I have always liked them as a
reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it.We can take the
mysterious, unclear future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just like
a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.
We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed,we collect a good
harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds,we collect a useless crop.If we plant
nothing at all,we harvest nothing at all.
I want the future to be better than the past.I don't want it spoiled by the mistakes
and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future
because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.
The past is gone.Nothing we can do will change it.The future is before us and
dynamic.Everything we do will affect it.Each day will bring with it new frontiers.

My Future Plan
The writer holds our future depends on what we do and that the future is
important to us because it is where we spend the rest life and brings something new.
Everybody dreams about the future. There are many things waiting for us in the
future, and sometimes I can't wait to become an adult.I'm excited about my future
because I have big hopes and dreams. My ideal future job will be that of a scientist,
researching, lecturing, and writing books.Whatever I'll be,I want to be useful to
society.
I am determined to make my dreams come true. All these will be a mere talk if I
am idle now.To attain my goal , I must make a point of training my body and
mind. This is a highly competitive society in which everyone is eager to come out on
top. That is not only a competition of physical strength and mental power , but a

I grew up in a family that ate dinner together every evening. Although my parents enjoyed
wine, they rarely drank during the week and always in moderation(节制).As for myself,1 wasn't
interested in alcoholic drinks and neither were my high school friends.
So when I arrived on campus for my first year of university life, I was a bit shocked.
Many different events had been organized for the freshmen, but they all had one thing in
common-alcohol, and plenty of .it wanting to be left out, I joined a few of the events. But I
always returned home early, feeling disappointed. Your personality, interests and experiences
didn't matter at all, only how many alcoholic drinks you could absorb before passing out(喝
醉).
It seemed shallow to me. I wanted to get to know my new coursemates, not how fast they.
could
down a pint of beer.
Gradually, however, I realized that real friends don't judge you by how much you can
drink and there were other ways of making friends. I joined a photography society, took a first
aid course, and every weekend l went cycling with a coursemate. I found that by engaging in
these activities and sharing the fun of learning new skills together in a group ,I formed much
stronger bonds with my new friends than even the strongest alcoholic drinks could encourage.
Another valuable lesson I learned is that it's perfectly okay to say "No" if you don't want
to drink. However, in many Western societies, especially the UK, binge drinking(狂喝)has
become
the norm. Many people who drink don't necessarily want to, but they give in to the peer
pressure(同伴压力)-they're afraid to say "No".
21. What shocked the author when he entered university?
A. The strange campus. B. The popularity of alcohol.
C. The drunken coursemates. D. The limited activities.
22. Why did the author return home early from the events at first?
A. He wasn't good at drinking. B. He had no familiar coursemates.
C. He hated the way people got along. D. He was left out by the organizers.
23. How did the author finally make real friends at university?
A. By saying "No" to alcoholic drinks.
B. By staying away from group activities.
C. By giving in to the peer pressure.
D. By joining people with common interests.

You use her as a shoulder to cry on. She texts you back with casual jokes. But she, Xiaoice,
is only a virtual chatbot.
Xiaoice, Microsoft's latest artificial intelligence robot, was briefly released in 2014, and
returned[来源:学科网 ZXXK]
to WeChat in 2015, where she became a big hit. Millions of young Chinese now exchange
messages
with her daily, The New York Times reported. On WeChat, Xiaoice is an official account. After
following it, users can start text-based conversations with Xiaoice.
"Her incredible learning ability was why people loved to talk with Xiaoice," Liu Jinchang, a
researcher at High-tech Research and Development Center under the Ministry of Science and
Technology, told China Daily. Apart from her ability to identify photos and send emojis(表情符

m conversations, Xiaoice gains 45 percent of her knowledge from interacting with users, China
Daily reported.
Chatbot programs first appeared in the mid-1960s in the US. Driven by top tech companies,
they are becoming smarter and more common. For instance, IBM's latest artificial intelligence
program served as an academic consultant at Australia's Deakin University, answering students'
questions about course schedules and financial aid. Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa have
been used as voice assistants who can read news, play music and even make jokes for their
users.
These programs are expected to move beyond smartphones, into televisions, cars and
living
rooms, The New York Times pointed out. However, it may take decades before scientists develop
a "Samantha", the advanced chatbot seen in the fiction film Her. In the film, Samantha sparks
a romantic relationship with her user played by US actor Joaquin Phoenix. Many viewers were
enthusiastic about this fantasy of virtual soul mates.

A. She became a best seller. B. She became very powerful.
C. She became a money maker. D. She became very popular.

If you watch British television on March 15, you might be surprised to see celebrities(名
人)
wearing funny red noses and joking; around. But don't worry. They're not mad. It's all part of
a money raising event called Red Nose Day.
Founded in 1985 by two British comedians, the aim of the event is to raise money to fight
poverty and injustice in the UK and Africa. Celebrities and public figures support the event by
making appearances on comic TV shows. For example, UK Prime Minister David Cameron once
appeared in a music video by One Direction, which the band produced for the event.
Britons don't just raise money for charitable causes on one day a year, but they do it all
year round. One way of doing so is by shopping in charity shops. These small shops sell clothes,
books and household goods just like any other shop except that it's all secondhand.
There are nearly 10,000 charity shops in the UK. Their business model is simple: Anybody
who has things they don't want anymore can donate them to a charity shop, where they are
checked for damage, cleaned and priced. The money that is made by selling them is used for a
charitable cause.
The idea of buying used clothes may sou nd unpleasant, but for shoppers who have less
spending money, it has been a welcome option. Now, shopping at charity shops is also becoming
popular with young people looking for alternative fashion. "You can find very unique clothes for
a very cheap price. It doesn't bother me that other people may have worn them. I simply wash
them before I wear them." said Anne Marie, a 19-year-old from the US.
So next time you spot a charity shop, why not go inside? Who knows, you might find a
lovely dress for just a few pounds. Even better, you can enjoy wearing it in the knowledge that
your money helped a good cause.
32. Why did Cameron appear in One Direction's music video?
A. To earn a living. B. To support the band.
C. To help raising money. D. To entertain the audience.
33. Where are the goods of charity shops from?
A. Local bands. B. People's donation.
C. British comedians. D. The UK government.
34. What's Anne Marie's attitude to charity shops?
A. Favorable. B. Particular. C. Doubtful. D. Disapproving.
35. What is the text mainly about?

Everyone can benefit from making an effort to practice gratitude(感激)every day. The
following
three steps can help you start feeling more grateful, and appreciative of the good things in
your
life:
Notice the Good Things in Your Life
36 Pay attention to the small everyday details of your life-nature, people,
community, shelter, creature comforts like a warm bed or a good meal. And then start
a
gratitude journal. Making a commitment to writing down good things each day makes it more
likely that we will notice good things as they happen.
Enjoy the Feeling of Gratitude
There are moments when you naturally, right then and there, feel filled with gratitude.
These are moments when you say to yourself, "Oh, wow, this is amazing! "or "How great
is
this!"Pause.____37 Let it sink in. Enjoy your blessings in the moment they happen.
Express Gratitude
Expressing gratitude is more than being polite. 38_ ___Show your appreciation to
someone who really did something nice. Say: "It was really kind of you to…,” "You did me a
big favor when...," or "Thank you for being there when...". 39 Hold the door open
for the person behind you, even if it means waiting a little longer than you normally would.
True gratitude doesn't leave you feeling like you owe other people something-after all, if
you've done someone a favor, you probably don't want the person to feel like you expect
something back in return. 40
A. It's about showing your heartfelt appreciation.

C. You can also express gratitude by doing a kindness.
D. It's all about feeling good and creating a cycle of good.

附:听力材料
(Text 1)
M: Do I need gloves?
W: Well, it’s not very cold. I don’t think you need gloves. Just bring an umbrella. Look, how
cloudy it is. It’s going to rain.
(Text 2)[来源:Zxxk.Com]
M: There is a lecture on French history in the hall this evening. I think you’ll be interested.
W: Great! I’ve been looking forward to one like that.
M: Don’t forget to go there early, or there won’t be any seats left.
(Text 3)
W: Fasten your seat belt, please, sir.
M: Thank you. But I didn’t realize we were going to land soon.
(Text 4)
W: Don’t forget we’re meeting tomorrow morning outside the railway station at eleven.
M: But I’m going out with Simon tonight. We’re staying in a nightclub till one a.m. I can’t meet
you until the afternoon. Two o’clock is better.
W: OK.
(Text 5)
W: I want some hand washing liquid. The chemist’s is at the other end of the shopping centre. So
let’s go and look for your swimming suit first.
M: Oh, yes. There’s a really nice one in the sports shop over there.
W: OK. And remind me to buy something to read. The bookshop is next to the chemist’s.
(Text 6)
W: Hi, Mark. How’re you?
M: Great, Cindy. What’s new? Would you like to come in for coffee?
W: I’d love to, but to tell you the truth, I’m right in the middle of making Rachel’s birthday cake,
and I’m out of eggs. Do you think I could borrow a couple?
M: Oh, sure. No problem. How many do you need?
W: Just two.
M: Wait a minute. I’ll get them.
(Text 7)
W: Have you got any other questions?
M: Yes. The speech should be for 20 minutes, is that right?
W: Yes, but 20 minutes in total, including 5 minutes for questions. So you’ll only talk for 15
minutes.
M: I won’t be able to say much in that time at all.
W: That’s why you have to plan what you’re going to say carefully and make sure you only
include the most important information. For instance, you won’t have time to give examples. But
you could give some images that show examples, without spending time talking about them.
M: That’s a good idea. And the audience can look at them while I talk. Thanks a lot for your help.
(Text 8)
M: Excuse me, Lily. Could you help me? You know we’ve got an essay to write about eating
customs across the world?
W: Yeah. We have to borrow some books, don’t we?
M: Yes, but I missed the library training. Could you tell me something about the library?
W: Sure, no problem. Let me tell you about the different parts of the library first. Here, you can
see the main door in the north that leads into the hall. In the middle of the building, there is a big
open PC zone. The stairs are on the left as you go in, and on the other side of the building there’s
the library café. It’s a good place to study with friends.
M: I really prefer to study alone.
W: Oh, if you like studying in a quiet place, it’s better to go upstairs, to the silent zone. It’s just on
the second floor.
M: OK, thanks.
(Text 9)
M: Excuse me, do you mind if I sit here?
W: Of course not, go ahead.
M: Thanks. I’m on my way to Washington, and you?
W: To San Francisco.
M: Really? I think San Francisco is probably the most exciting place in the US.
W: So do I. No other city has as many good restaurants or as much good music.
M: Is San Francisco your hometown?
W: No, I’m from a very small town in Pennsylvania. I don’t want to live there any longer. I don’t
like small town life very much.
M: En, neither do I really. But small towns have their advantages, like less traffic and so on.
W: And friendly people. You know I’m beginning to feel homesick. By the way, where are you
from?
M: China.
W: China? But you speak English just like a native speaker. I didn’t have any idea.
(Text 10)
M: Hi, Polly, this is James. I was just ringing to check that you’re still OK to come camping with
me at the weekend and tell you what I’ve planned. My parents thought it was probably better not
to go too far away because the weather hasn’t been very good this week and if it rains all the time
we might want to come home! They sugge sted we go to the campsite just outside Guilsfield.
That’s a village not far away. We can catch a bus to the village, and then we’ll walk from the bus
stop to the campsite. It’s on a farm. I stayed there once, about five years ago, with my parents and
we had a car then of course, but we’ll be OK. I’ve talked to my parents about what we need to
take. Well, you’ve got a tent which doesn’t weigh too much, so can you bring that? There’s no
need to bring food because we can eat at the farmhouse, but we need something for boiling water
for drinks. I can bring something to cook on. And I’ll bring coffee and milk. We must get the tent
up before dark on Friday, which is about eight. So we must meet at the bus stop at a quarter to four
to catch the four o’clock bus. We’ll be there by five, then. I’m so excited! Call me back soon, bye.
