I work in a nursing home and my job is to take care of the elderly.
This year, a very sweet old lady that I cared for, Alice, had gone through a difficult time. She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice. In November I was finally able to get her back to her “home”.
Alice had thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized that that happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was coming after Christmas was not enough to make her feel happy, I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!
On Christmas Eve, I gave her a surprise by asking if she would like
to go to a candlelight service at church that night.
Instead of taking her to my church, I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were. We got there early and I got her a seat where her friends could see her as they came in. Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her.
The candlelight service was beautiful and Alice got a lot of love from her old and new friends there.
The truth of the story is that I am the one who got the best gift: the smile on Alice’s face.

C. A real present D. The true love

Dealing with a broken friendship can be one of the most heartbreaking situations you go through in life, especially if you've been friends with the person for a long time. There are a lot of things that can lead to division between friends, but I think in general real break﹣ups occur when friends take very different paths in life, and find it harder and harder to relate. Then, even if they don't have a sudden split due to a major argument, they'll still find themselves drifting apart (逐渐疏远).
Obviously time plays a big part here.If an argument has taken place, but there is at least the potential for the friendship to be re-established,both people will need some time to sort out the situation. After a while, they may be able to start talking again. The hardest part may be the friendship not being the same as before or not being as close, but this depends on the situations of the division.
People also have a hard time seeing changes in their friends. This is especially serious if your friend has changed for the worse, and you risk getting pulled in the same direction by trying to fix the friendship. In such a situation,it's often best to ask someone you trust outside the broken friendship——someone who can be objective (客观的) about it﹣to
keep yourself on track if you do decide to try to help your friend.
25.Generally speaking,two friends break up when .
A.there isn't enough communication between them
B.they have a major argument C.they have different life goals
D.they're separate for a long time
26.What's the most difficult problem when two friends are reunited?
A.They may not be able to start talking again.
B.Their relationship might not be as close as before.
C.They may start quarrelling again.
D.They no longer have time and patience.
27.What's the best thing to do to remain friends following a break﹣up,especially
if one has changed?
A. Stay on the same track as before.
B. Pull the changed friend in the same direction.
C. Make yourself objective. D. Turn to someone reliable and objective.
28.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.What to Do when Time Pulls Us Apart
B.What Does True Friendship Mean?
C.How to Deal with a Broken Friendship
D.How to Treat a Changed Friend.

Insects (昆虫) are a very healthy food. They have almost as much protein (蛋白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals.
Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat!
Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food.
But insects will not replace (替代) animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries would have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable.
Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named “The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook”, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel
around telling people about the benefits (好处) of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do.
32. Eating insects _____.
A. is not healthy B. makes people put on fat
C. helps protect large animals D. is environmentally friendly
33. The example of Marcel Dicke is given to show _____.
A. the high cost of food production
B. it’s quite easy for farmers to raise insects
C. raising insects is a good choice for farmers
D. the different ways of feeding cows and insects
34. The long way eating insects has to go mainly results from _____.
A. their terrible taste B. people’s old beliefs
C. family traditions D. eating methods
35. We can infer from David and other insect experts that _____.
A. people can make a lot of money from insects
B. insects should be better protected C. people should eat more insects
D. it’s dangerous to eat insects

W: Look, Jenny. I don't understand what's going on. You said your sister was arriving at 7: 30 and it's 8: 30 now.

W: How do you do, Mark? I'm the reporter from the Sports Weekly. May I ask you some questions about the Marathon Race that you've finished?
M: Please go ahead.
W: What makes you participate in such a long race?
M: I have confidence in my strength. You know, I manage to do some exercise for two hours every day.
W: Do you mean that regular exercise contributes a lot to your excellent health?
M: Sure. Young people nowadays watch games on television and read about sports in the newspaper
and claim to love sports. I can't see any good of that.
W: I am one of those young people. What shall I do?
M: A human being is a kind of machine that wears out from lack of use. You can start with some easy movements, such as jogging and swimming.
W: Shall I stick to one exercise?
M: You can stick to a type of exercise that is suitable for you. Your general fitness level is likely to increase through a variety of different activities.
W : Thank you for your advice. And I hope I can see you in the race next year.

When you are invited to lunch, dinner or supper, it is very impolite to arrive late. When you arrive, the hostess or some members of the. family will probably meet you at’ the door and take your coat and hat. In a few minutes the hostess will ask her guests to come in to dinner. She may or may not ask each gentleman to take a lady in. If she does, the lady will take the gentleman's arm as they walk into the dining room. If she does not, the ladies will go in first, followed by the gentlemen. The hostess will either point out their seats to the guests as they come in or have a place card at each place with the guests, name on it.
After the meal is over it is not polite to leave for at least half an hour, lest you seem to have come only for the meal. An evening dinner invitation usually implies that you stay for the whole evening. The hostess often plans some after-dinner entertainment
