I was fifteen months old, a happy, carefree (无忧无虑的) kid until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a glass rabbit which cut my eye badly enough to blind it. Trying to save the eye, the doctors stitched (缝合) the eyeball together where it was cut, leaving a big ugly scar in the middle of my eye. And as I grew, this sightless eye in so many ways controlled me.
Yet Mama would say to me? at every turn, “Hold your head up high and face the world.” It became a faith that I relied on. She had started when I was young. She would hold me in her arms and stroke my hair and say, “If you hold your head up high, it will be okay, and people will see your beautiful soul.” She continued this message whenever I wanted to hide.
Those words have meant different things to me over the years. As a little child, I thought Mama meant; “Be careful or you will fall down or bump into something because you are not looking.” As an adolescent, even though I tended to look down to hide my shame, I found that sometimes when I held my head up high and let people know me, they liked me. My mama’s words helped me begin to realize that by letting people look at my face, I let them recognize the intelligence and beauty behind both eyes even if they couldn’t see it on the surface.
In high school I was successful both academically and socially. I was even elected class president, but on the inside I still felt like a monster. All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mama and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside.”
When I met the man who became my partner for life, we looked each other straight in the eye, and he told me I was beautiful inside and out. He meant it. My mama’s love and encouragement were the spark that gave me the confidence to overcome my own doubt. I had faced hardship, encountered my problems head on, and learned not only to appreciate myself but to have deep compassion for others.
“Hold your head up high,” has been heard many times in my home. Each of my
children has felt its invitation. The gift my mama gave me lives on in another generation.
24. How did the writer have her eyes hurt?
A. She was attacked by a glass rabbit. B. Her eyes were hurt by accident.
C. The doctor made a mistake. D. A serious illness blinded her.
25. When she heard her mother told her to hold her head up high for the first time, she .
A. didn’t fully understand these words B. was greatly encouraged and moved
C. was puzzled by these words D. was surprised by these words
26. Why did the writer still feel unhappy when she was successful both academically and socially?
A. Because she was not satisfied with what she has.
B. Because she thought she could have done better.
C. Because she wanted to live a normal life.
D. Because she really wanted to be different.
27. Which would be the best title for the article?
A. My mom’s gift to me B. How I found my life—partner
C. My terrible childhood accident D. Disability is no shame

Children who are spanked (挨打) have lower IQs worldwide, including in the United States. All parents want smart children. Avoiding spanking and correcting misbehavior in other ways can help that happen.
A new research by Professor Murray Straus found that children in the United States who were spanked had lower IQs four years later than those who weren’t spanked. Straus and Mallie Paschall, a senior research scientist, studied nationally examples of 806 children aged 2 to 4, and 704 aged 5 to 9. Both groups were retested four years later.
The IQs of children IQs aged 2 to 4 who weren’t spanked were 5 points higher
four years later than the IQs of those who were spanked. The IQs of children aged 5 to 9 who weren’t spanked were 2.8 points higher four years later than the IQs of children at the same age who were spanked. How often parents spanked made a difference. The more spanking, the slower the development of children’s mental ability. But even small amounts of spanking made a difference.
Straus also found a lower national average IQ in nations in which spanking was more popular. His analysis shows the strongest link between physical punishment and IQ is for those whose parents continue to use physical punishment even when they are teenagers.
Straus and colleagues in 32 nations used data on physical punishment experienced by 17,404 university students when they were children. According to Straus, there’re two explanations for the relation of physical punishment to lower IQ.
First, physical punishment is extremely stressful and can become a long-lasting stressor for young children, who typically experience punishment three or more times a week. For many it continues for years. The stress of physical punishment often leads to being fearful that terrible things are about to happen and being easily shocked. They’re associated with lower IQ. Second, a higher national level of economic development leads to both fewer parents using physical punishment and a higher national IQ.
The good news is that the use of physical punishment has been decreasing worldwide, which may signal future gains in IQ across the globe. The United Nations has called on all member nations to forbid physical punishment by parents. Nevertheless, there’s evidence that attitude favoring physical punishment and actual use of physical punishment have been declining even in nations which haven’t forbidden physical punishment.
28. From the passage we can know that physical punishment will make .
A. no scientists B. a well-behaved child
C. a bad parent-child relationship D. a child feel nervous continuously
29. It can be concluded from Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4 that .
A. long-term spanking will cause children’s mental disorder.
B. low national average IQ limits the mental development of children
C. young children have more chances to suffer from physical punishment.
D. high frequency of spanking results in slow development of children’s intelligence
30. According to Straus’s research, children’s being spanked is probably related to parents?
A. low income B. little education
C. long-lasting pressure D. passive personalities
31. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .
A. the improvement of global average IQ is out of the question
B. physical punishment becomes less popular in the world
C. most countries have realized the negative consequence of punishing in its member nations.
D. the UN has succeeded in banning physical punishment in its member nations
D
American society has grown to love reality TV shows. The style of these shows suggests that the plots we watch are the realities of the world. However, do the shows even have a grain of reality in them?
In a study done by Psychology Today, a survey of 239 people was conducted to determine the reasons for watching reality TV shows. Though it was assumed at the beginning of the study that the main reason for watching the shows was to stay in the social circle and be able to participate in the office chat of the next day, the reasons for watching turned out to be much different.
A common reason given by the viewers of the shows was the idea of fame. The idea of the lifestyle of a higher class was appealing to most of those who were surveyed. Seeing people with fame on television plants the idea that they too are able to gain a superior status in society.
The problem at hand is that television is showing us what reality is supposed to be, while at the same time making the actuality of reality unreal.
So many girls in today’s society are dressing like the girl on these shows. They
watch these shows and want to look like the people on the shows. This leads to the sameness in society, and the idea of the unique individual fades.
The way young Americans act today is also changing. Children and teens are watching reality TV shows and wanting to act more like adults. They are using what used to be considered adult words and doing things associated with adulthood, like drinking, at a very early age.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” Be who you want to be, and don’t let what happens on the screen make you someone you are not.
32. According to the study, people like reality TV shows partly because they .
A. like to chat about them with their families
B. enjoy the realities of the world on the screen
C. admire the lifestyle of famous people
D. want to stay in their own social circle.
33. According to the author, reality TV shows, influence on teens is .
A. misleading B. positive C. slight D. avoidable
34. Emerson will probably agree that .
A. it is impossible to be oneself
B. we should try to be ourselves
C. the outside world always improves us
D. personal achievements are the most important
35. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Why not Watch Reality TV Shows?
B. Why is the Ways We Dress Changing?
C. Do You Love Reality TV Shows?
D. Does Reality TV Reflect Reality?

There is distinction between reading for information and reading for
understanding. 36 .
The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else. 37 . Such materials may increase our store of information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And clearly we don’t have any difficulty in gaining the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started. Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement.
The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely understand. Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader’s understanding. 38 . Otherwise one person could never learn from another. Here “learning” means understanding more, not remembering more information.
What are the conditions in this kind of reading? First, there is inequality in understanding. 39 . Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack. Second, the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, success of communication is achieved.
40 . It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to. In fact, any book that can be read for understanding or information can probably be read for entertainment as well.
A. Thus, we can employ the word ‘‘reading” in two distinct senses.
B. Such communication between unequals must be possible.
C. We can get access to the content of those materials easily.
D. The writer must be “superior” to the reader in understanding.
E. The writer should have a better communicating skill.
F. Besides gaining information and understanding, there? s another goal of reading—entertainment.
G. Reading for entertainment is capable of increasing our understanding for information.

第二节 作文参考范文:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m glad to know you're going to hold a summer camp from July 1st to 7th during the vacation. I have great interest in it. There're so many wonderful activities, such as experiencing foreign classes, visiting world-famous places of interest and learning family gardening, which I think are all very useful to us high school students.
After my careful consideration, I've decided to apply to learn family gardening. I want to learn how to grow flowers and plants as well. We have a garden, where my parents grow various vegetables, flowers and plants. With the knowledge I learn, I hope I can help them with some work in the garden and manage it better.
Thanks for reading my application. I hope I'll have a chance to take part in the activity.
I’m looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
