It started in 1886 with Josephine Cochrane, a woman in Shelbyville, Illinois. She was a rich woman who could afford servants to wash her dishes, so she really didn't mind the work. What she did mind was that her servants broke the dishes. She hosted quite a few dinner parties, and after every party the servants broke more of her expensive dishes.‎ Finally, Cochrane took action. First, she measured her dishes and bent wire into racks to hold them. Next, she put the racks on a wheel in a large copper boiler. Then, the boiler sprayed hot, soapy water on the dishes as a motor turned the wheel. After a hot water rinse(冲洗),the dishes were clean!‎ Josephine Cochrane's friends were impressed with the machine and asked her to build more. Af ter that, word got out fast. Soon hotel and restaurant owners who didn't like broken dishes also were interested. Cochrane then knew that she had a wonderful machine, so she received a patent from the government, which said that only the inventor can make money from an invention. Then in 1893 Chicago held a World Fair where inventions from all over the world were shown. Cochrane's labor-saving machine was a big hit. Her dishwasher won the highest award.‎ Cochrane's company came out with a smaller machine in 1914. It was supposed to be for the ordinary home, but it wasn't an immediate success. Many homes couldn't produce the extremely hot water it needed. Also, in most homes, dishwashing wasn't considered very difficult compared to most other housework. In fact some people liked to relax at the sink after a hard day! Sales of the home model finally picked up in the 1950s when people had more money and wanted to have more time to enjoy themselves. Now many homes have electric dishwasher that aren't very different from the one Josephine Cochrane invented more than 100 years ago.‎ ‎56. The smaller machine became popular only when______.‎ A. people had more relaxing jobs B. hot water could be produced C.housework became easier D. people's living conditions improved ‎ ‎58. Compared with Cochrane’s invention, modern electric dishwashers_______.‎ A. cost less money B. are quite different C. are much the same D. wash many other things B A new Dutch study has found that many men these days are pressured to work up to 40 more hours per week than usual to stay competitive in today’s environment. The latest research has shown that women face the same pressures as men but may work fewer hours due to household chores (家务琐事), which increases their risk of losing their jobs. ‎ Obviously, there are different ways of work in many European countries, but the Danish study could also be applicable to the United States, where longer working hours are gradually becoming the rule as well, the researchers said. According to the findings published in the April issue of the journal, Gender and Society, increased competition in the workplace, in combination with modern business practices, is resulting in significantly higher levels of overtime. And what is interesting, in most cases, is that working longer hours does not even lead to greater productivity. ‎ ‎“This clearly does not ease the situation for women and men who want to combine career and family life,” said a main researcher on the study, Patricia van Echtelt, who is a scientist at the Netherlands institute for Social Research. “What is more, the study shows that working longer hours does not lead to greater productivity and effectiveness, and thus does not necessarily contribute to employers’ needs, but potentially harms the well-being of employees,” she added. ‎ The experts based their findings on a survey of the working habits of more than 1,000 male and female employees. Overtime was defined as the hours that exceeded the working hours stated in an employee’s contract. The researchers found that 69 percent of men worked overtime compared with 42 percent of women. They also showed that women who worked extra hours, spent, on average, approximately five more hours at their workplace, compared with men’s seven additional hours. ‎ Van Echtelt and her fellow colleagues said that the gender gap is partly due to the continuing trend for women to be more involved in unpaid family work. And even when couples share family work, men often refer to their contribution as ‘helping’ their wives, without feeling that they carry the main responsibility, the authors wrote in the journal. However, they did note that men are getting more involved these days with family and children. ‎ Cornell University’s Youngjoo Cha, who carried out another research project based on U.S. data, discovered that if a husband works more than 60 hours per week, his wife is 42 percent more ‎ likely to leave her job.‎ ‎59.According to the text, one can learn that working overtime might _______. ‎ A. benefit both the employers and the employees B. benefit neither the employers nor the employees C. benefit the employers, but not the employees D. benefit the employees, but not the employers ‎60.The underlined word, “exceeded”, in the fourth paragraph could probably be replaced by _______. ‎ A. added to B. went beyond C. limited D. required ‎61. When doing housework, men tend to think that _______. ‎ A. it is their responsibility to do it B. their wives work harder than they do C. it can ease their pressure at work D. they are just giving a hand to their wives[来源:学§科§网Z§X§X§K]‎ C Cure for tiredness?‎ Staying up late is a potential battle between parents and kids. But the solution could be as simple as changing your meal time.‎ Researchers at the University of Surry, UK, recently found that delaying meals could help change one of the internal body clocks. Besides a “master” clock in the brain, there are clocks in ‎ other parts of the body. They are usually synchronized according to factors including light.‎ During the study, researchers tested 10 participants to examine the effect of changing meal times on their body clocks. The participants were given three meals ---breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the first stage, participants received breakfast 30 minutes after waking. Lunch and dinner followed, after 5-hour intervals. In the second stage, each meal was delayed by 5 hours. Right after each stage, blood and fat samples were collected. ‎ Results showed that later meal times greatly influenced blood sugar levels. A 5-hour delay in meal times caused a 5-hour delay in the internal blood sugar rhythms. ‎ The discovery showed that meal times are in line with the body clock that controls blood sugar levels. ‎ This is a small study but the researchers believe the findings could help jet lag sufferers and night-shift workers.‎ In a study by the University of Surrey in 2013, researchers explored what happened when a person’s body was changed from a normal pattern to that of a night-shift worker’s.‎ After people work through the night, over 97 percent of the body’s rhythmic genes are disrupted(扰乱,使混乱).‎ These findings explain why we feel so bad following a long flight, or after working at night, according to Simon Archer, one of the study’s researchers.‎ ‎“It’s like living in a house. There’s a clock in every room in the house and in all of those rooms those clocks are now disrupted, which of course leads to chaos in the household,” fellow researcher DerkJan Dijk told the BBC.‎ Changing meal times didn’t affect the “master” body clock --- the one controlling when we get sleepy --- but it can reset the body clock that controls blood sugar levels. This wouldn’t necessarily cure jet lag completely, but it might reduce the negative effects.‎ A study published earlier this year suggested that just a weekend camping trip could be enough ‎ to reset our body clocks. And now this latest research shows regular food schedules could play a key part too. ‎ ‎62. What did researchers at the University of Surrey find from their new study?‎ A. Connections between the “master” clock and clocks in other parts of the body.‎ B. Blood sugar levels are affected by when we eat rather than by our internal clocks.‎ ‎ C. A delay in meal times causes an irregular change in blood sugar rhythms.‎ ‎ D. Changing meal times can reset one of our body clocks.‎ ‎63. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the new study, according to the article?‎ ‎ A. The interval between each meal being given was different.‎ ‎ B. Blood and fat samples of the two groups of participants were collected.‎ ‎ C. Each meal was served five hours later during the second stage.‎ ‎ D. Participants were asked to report their feelings after each stage.‎ ‎64. What can we learn from the study by researchers at the University of Surrey from 2013?A. A minority of our body’s genes would be disrupted if we worked through the night.‎ ‎ B. Our genes often become less active after a long flight or night of work.‎ ‎ C. The disruption of one gene could lead to the disruption of other genes.‎ ‎ D. A disruption to the body’s rhythmic genes can cause people to feel bad.‎ ‎65. According to the article, ______.‎ ‎ A.there is more than one way to reset body clocks ‎ ‎ B. it’s impossible to reduce the negative effects caused by jet lag or night work ‎ C. the “master” body clock controls all the other body clocks ‎ D. a change in meal times can reset the “master” body clock 第II卷(非选择题 共45分)‎ 第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)‎ ‎ The past 20 years have produced great advances in technology and communications. As a result, people throughout the world have become ever more connected, which has changed ways of life around the world.‎ Perhaps the biggest change in this process is the effect of globalization on commerce. In an effort to build a global economy, most nations have willingly accepted free trade, which removes certain limits to make it easier for nations to exchange with one another. A further aim of this process is to aid poor nations and thus make poor people fewer and fewer. Globalization has indeed increased trade throughout the world, but experts disagree about its effect on the poor.‎ Those who support free trade in the global market point out that competition lowers prices. Its critics argue that, without controls, such a system often harms poor nations. To some extent, both are correct. For example, Jamaica imports milk from the US and because the imported milk is cheaper than local milk, more poor people drink milk and improve their nutrition. At the same time, the cheaper milk puts local dairy farmers out of business. In this sense, globalization causes as much harm as good.‎ People support free trade in the globalization market for a number of reasons. Studies show that when a poor nation begins trading on the global level, it gains certain benefits. Its economy grows rapidly. Multinational companies set up factories, which provide jobs for people, thus lessening the gap between the rich and the poor.‎ Critics of uncontrolled free trade question these conclusions. Although they agree that the global market can offer growth and jobs to poor nations, they doubt if the number of the poor will decline. In fact, they cite(引用)studies that show the number has increased as a result of the global market. In addition, the gap between rich and poor nations is growing. ‎ Whichever side they are on, most experts believe that globalization can possibly help the poor, but both sides need to find a way to make it work.‎ Globalization on Commerce Introduction to With great advances in technology and communications, people have become ‎ globalization on commerce ‎ more connected, which has greatly changed people’s (66) ▲ around the world.‎ ‎(67) ▲ of globalization on commerce ‎● To build a global economy so that nations can exchange more (68) ▲ .‎ ‎● To aid poor nations, thus reducing (69) ▲ .‎ Different ‎ ‎(70) ▲ ‎ towards globalization [来源:学科网]‎ on commerce[来源:Z,xx,k.Com]‎ People in favor of free trade[来源:学,科,网Z,X,X,K]‎ ‎● Competition lowers prices.‎ ‎● Trading on the global level will be (71) ▲ to poor nations for various reasons.‎ ‎● The gap between the poor and rich nations can be lessened.‎ People(72) ▲ free trade ‎● Without control, poor nations may (73) ▲ .‎ ‎● More poor people appeared because of global market.‎ ‎● The gap between the poor and rich nations is growing.‎ ‎(74) ▲ ‎ Globalization is (75) ▲ to aid the poor but an effective way should be found to make it work.‎ 第五部分 英语基础知识 第一节 单词拼写(共10小题,每小题0.5分,满分5分)‎ 注意:请将答案写在答题纸上相应题号的横线上。每个空格只填一个单词。‎ ‎76.
