I’d come to this remote beach on my sailboat, a place to escape. My marriage was in trouble. I worried about the harm to my two boys. But I didn’t know how to make things better.‎ ‎“Help! Help!” The girls screamed. I saw one girl was at the edge of the surf, yelling. I charged into the waves, swam to her and seized her. “But where is the other girl?” I looked across the water and saw a small head after a big wave. I shifted the girl I’d rescued to my back. She told me the other girl was her sister. For a moment I thought of my boys. How much they loved each other. How much I loved them.‎ I quickened my swimming and held the second little girl. We were at least 50 yards from ‎ land. No way could I swim that far, not with two girls hanging on to me. But there was no time to wait. I swam as hard as I could, but the weight of the girls grew heavier with every minute. My lungs burned. I opened my mouth to take a breath, but instead swallowed water. I choked. Couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t swim. From behind me I felt an unbelievable force, lifting.‎ ‎“Mommy!” The cry pierced my consciousness(意识). I looked up. An elderly man was trying to drag me out of the water. Two women were swimming toward shore. “Thank you,” one of the women cried. “You saved my daughters.” My efforts and my struggles had paid off. I thought of that big wave, lifting me and pushing me. When my body had failed me, and when all hope was disappearing, I was given the strength I needed.‎ I stood up. My family were waiting for me. There were things I could do. I just needed to make an effort. The strength would be given to me.‎ ‎5.Why did the author turn a deaf ear to laughter of the two girls?‎ A. Because he couldn’t wait to go sailing. B. Struggles to Fight Sea Waves C According to the latest statistics, more than two in three US adults are considered overweight (BMI over 25), and of those, 36.5% of US adults fall into the obese(肥胖的)category ( BMI greater than 30). Approximately half of overweight and obese adults are trying to lose weight. However, many often end up in failure. So people often ask me, “Why aren’t I losing weight?”‎ After nearly two decades of working with patients trying to lose weight, I’ve put together this list of some of the most common reasons and suggestions to get you on the right track to successful weight loss.‎ You have calorie “amnesia”‎ Put simply, people often eat more calories than they realize. Total calories consumed matters when it comes to weight loss. People frequently forget about the little things between meals that add up calorically and can disturb significantly weight loss.‎ The fix: Keep a food journal or track your food intake with an app. Research shows that this simple behavior can double weight loss.‎ You relax your diet too much on weekends This is another very common problem that is a bit more challenging to fix, as weekends are more social than weekdays. Three days ( Friday, Saturday and Sunday) of more relaxed eating can easily erase four days of more focused effort.‎ The fix: Don’t lose self-control if you are trying to lose weight. One night, have a glass of wine or a richer dish but not both. On another night, split a dessert, skip the wine, and try to choose a healthier dish.‎ You eat too much of a good thing Unsaturated(不饱和的)fat, including nuts, seeds, avocados and olive oil, plays an important role in a healthy diet. However, you can easily eat too much healthy fat along with other healthy foods, including wholegrains. So again, portion(一份)size matters.‎ The fix: Practice portion control when it comes to healthy but higher-calorie foods.‎ ‎9. What is a person with a BMI of 15 likely to be?‎ A. Thin. B. Short. C. Overweight. D. Obese ‎10. What can we infer about the author?‎ A. He is a little overweight. B. He failed to lose weight.‎ C. He is a physician. D. He is a fitness coach.‎ ‎11. What do people tend to forget when counting total calories consumed?‎ A. Main courses. B. Small meals. C. Soft drinks. D. Unsaturated fat.‎ ‎12. How should people deal with healthy but higher-calorie foods?‎ A. Skip olive oil. B. Avoid wholegrains. C. Consume no nuts. D. Limit portion size.‎ D Gift No. 1‎ Offer to be your mother’s health friend. Promise to be there for any and all doctor’s visits ‎ whether a disease or a regular medical check-up. Most mothers always say “no need”, but another set of eyes and ears is always a good idea at a doctor’s visit. The best part? This one is free.‎ Gift No. 2‎ Help your mother organize all of her medical records, which include the test results and medical information. Put them all in one place. Be sure to make a list of all of her medicines and what times she takes them. “Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mother’s life,” Dr Marie Savard said.‎ Gift No. 3‎ Enough sleep is connected to general health conditions. “Buy your mother cotton sheets and comfortable pillows to encourage better sleep,” Savard said. “We know that good sleep is very important to our health. ”‎ Gift No. 4‎ Some gift companies such as Presents for Purpose allow you to pay it forward this Mother’s Day by picking gifts in which 10 percent of the price you pay goes to a charity(慈善机构).
