In 2012, Topher White visited a wildlife sanctuary(禁猎区) in Indonesia. He and his fellow volunteers were hiking through the rain forest when they came across a man cutting down a huge tree. They were watching illegal logging in action. Illegal logging is a big problem in rain forests around the world, contributing to climate change and destroying habitats for rain-forest creatures.
The logger fled the scene, but the experience bothered White. He knew the wildlife sanctuary employed rangers to watch out for illegal loggers, but the guards hadn’t known about the man White saw. How did they miss him?
White, a trained engineer, thought technology could be part of the solution in the fight against deforestation. “The rain forest is a noisy place, but it’s also a noisy thing to cut a tree down,” he told a journalist. “It struck me that there
had to be a way to hear this.”
Over the next few months, White created a device he calls a Guardian, a recycled smartphone powered by solar panels. Guardians are mounted on trees, high in the rain-forest canopy, and they can pick up the sound of a chain saw from two-thirds of a mile away. When a Guardian detects a chain saw, it sends an alert to rangers that indicates where the sound is coming from, and the rangers set off to stop the illegal activity. “If you go that early, if you really respond the moment you get the alert, there’s a chance that you can show up before much of the tree has even been cut,” White says. White installed the first Guardians in Indonesia. Just two days later, the devices helped rangers interrupt an illegal logger. “That convinced me others could use this too,” White says.
Since then, White has started a nonprofit group called Rainforest Connection to create and install Guardians all over the world. Rainforest Connection now covers 90,000 square miles of rain forest in 10 countries. Guardians also help protect animals against poaching. White says he couldn’t have done any of this without local partners. “We’re just tech support for them,” he says. “The people who are really making a difference and fighting climate change are on the ground in the rain forest.”
24. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Illegal logging is most serious in Indonesia.
B. Topher White helped the rangers catch the illegal logger on spot.
C. Illegal logging does harm to the environment in various ways.
D. The noises made by illegal loggers can be easily heard in the quiet rain forest.

B. have been installed all over the world

Disney will release a second "Frozen" movie on November 22. Now, we know a bit more about how it will look. On September 23, a brand-new, two-minute trailer was released. The love between sisters is going to be tested again in "Frozen 2." Queen Elsa and Princess Anna will take a journey. Together, they hope to save the kingdom of Arendelle. We also get to meet some new characters.
The clip opens with a narrator(讲述者) speaking. "Far away, as north as we can go, once stood an enchanted forest," he says. The scene flashes back to a young Elsa and Anna. They are talking with their parents. In the first movie, the parents died in a terrible accident. "You see an enchanted forest?" Anna asks her dad, King Agnarr. "Yes. It was a magical place, but something went wrong. Since then, no one can get in or out," the narrator continues. Scenes show characters battling with swords and shields. The forest soon gets covered in purple flames and smoke.
Next, you see the sisters talking in a caring moment. "What would I do without you?" Elsa asks her sister. "You'll always have me," Anna promises. Then the adventure begins. The people of Arendelle are shown running out of the kingdom. Of course, Anna is not going to let her sister go into the forest alone. "Excuse me? I climbed the north mountain, survived a frozen heart and saved you from my ex-boyfriend, so you know I'm coming," Anna says.
The final clips show the whole group going into the enchanted forest. The crew is led by Elsa, Anna and Kristoff. Olaf the snowman is there, too. Sven, Kristoff's pet reindeer, joins them. During their journey, there are some new faces. One is the fierce female leader of the roaming Northuldra group, Yelana. Another is the free-spirited member of the Northuldra, Honeymaren. She is joined by her cheery brother, Ryder, and the curious and cute salamander, Bruni.
It looks like we will finally learn why Elsa was born with magical powers. We will also continue to see that Anna will do anything for her sister. "You can't just follow me into fire!" Elsa shouts at Anna. "Then don't run into fire!" Anna fires back. At the end, we learn that Arendelle must be protected at all costs.

Picture this: You’re searching the Internet and come across a website with interesting articles. Some are news stories. Their goal is to share information. Others only look like news stories. They’re actually advertisements, or ads. The goal of an ad is to get you to buy something. How do you, the reader, tell the difference between a news story and an ad?
Back when I was growing up, it was easier. We got most of our information from newspapers. Big news stories appeared on the front page, and ads were boxed off and clearly labeled. But on the Internet, the two are often presented together. It can be hard to tell which is which.
That’s why the research group I direct conducted a study. My research team showed kids like you the home page of a popular digital magazine. We asked them to tell us what was a news story and what was an ad. Most were great at identifying certain types of ads. “It has a coupon code, a big company logo, and the words limited
time offer,” one student wrote about an ad on the site. So where did kids get stumped?
Some ads seem the same as real news stories. They have headlines and contain information. But they may also include the words sponsored content. Sponsored means “paid for,” and content refers to the information in the story. “Sponsored content” is a way of saying that something is an ad. Most kids in our study, even if they used the Internet often, didn’t know this.
Just because something is sponsored doesn’t necessarily mean it’s false. It means someone paid money for it to appear. Companies pay so that readers will see their stories, buy their products, and like what the company stands for.
As a reader, you have a right to know who’s behind the information you’re consuming. So look for the phrase sponsored content. (And look carefully. Sometimes, it will be written in tiny letters.) The Internet is a vast sea of information. To use it well, we not only have to know how to swim but also how to avoid the sharks. Learning to tell the difference between an ad and a news story is an important step to becoming Internet smart.
32. The purpose of the first paragraph is to ____________.
A. tell the difference between a news story and an ad
B. criticize the websites for too many ads on them
C. show the writer’s preference for newspapers
D. make readers interested and involved in what is going to be talked about
33. Sponsored content means ___________________.
A. the website gets paid for allowing something to appear on it
B. something is false
C. something isn’t necessarily an ad
D. readers have to buy the products advertised on the website
34. What does “sharks” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Fierce sea animals. B. Very bad people on the Internet.
C. Unwanted information. D. Websites which contain ads.
35. Which is the best title?
A. Watch Out for Traps on the Internet B. Make the Most of the Internet
C. Be Internet Smart D. Be Aware of Your Rights

Understanding and inclusion start with you. TFK talked with CARYL M. STERN, president and CEO of UNICEF U.S.A. and coauthor of a book called Hate Hurts. Here’s her advice on how to handle hurtful comments and find common ground.
36 .
You don’t have to respond right in the moment. Sometimes, you are so angry or hurt or shocked that you can’t respond. Or sometimes, it would be such a public response that you would humiliate(羞辱) the offender. That might not be the best way to get them to hear what you have to say. 37 , and follow through with it.
Use I statements, not you statements.
Explain to the offender that you are not talking about what they said. Explain that you are talking about how what they said made you feel. You can’t necessarily change a person in one conversation. And you can’t ask someone to change who they are. 38 .
Learn how to ask questions.
39 . One is how to ask questions, the second is how to give answers. You want to be able to ask about things you don’t understand, but you need to know how to ask in the right way. Part of that comes from learning how to give answers and finding the right vocabulary.
40 .
As a class project, look at what’s happening in your community to find out what’s different from what you normally do. What festivals, concerts, or plays are happening? See if you can get someone in your life to take you to one of them.
