Every time I look at my parents or even think of them, pride overwhelms (充溢) me. My life is all thanks to them. I especially admire their determination during our struggle to come to America.
Our native country was Vietnam, but, forced to escape from the danger there, we had to leave our home and all our belongings and go on a long boat journey to America. I was two years old and the youngest of seven children. I thought of how I might have been a burden to my parents but they have assured me that I was wanted.
This journey was not easy for my parents, but throughout they thought of their children first. I was even told that they once ate only apple peers (果皮), sparing the fruit part for the rest of us. My parents’ many sacrifices are admirable.
Our journey to America was not the last of our struggles. We were also faced with starting a new life in America with nothing. Our first years were hard. I will always remember how my dad used to drop me off at kindergarten and walk on, often in the snow, to English language school while my mom went to work. After a few years my dad got a degree in business and a better job, and slowly our living status began to rise.
Today we own three cars and two houses, and we live very comfortably. But my parents’ greatest achievement is that they have proven that nothing is impossible. To this day they are looked up to by people they have inspired. I greatly admire my parents and therefore I would like to give them a heartfelt thank you and express my deep love for them.

The word heliography (日光胶版术) usually refers to a photographic process invented in 1822, but artist Michael Papadakis has given it a new meaning.
Michael used to create art in the old way, with painting and drawing supplies, but on a trip along the Silk Road from Asia to Europe, he became excited about his discovery. “When I was in China my friend had a magnifying glass (放大镜) sitting on his table and I remember the sun shining through the window onto the magnifying glass,” says Michael. “I instantly had a moment of realisation where I thought to myself, ‘I could probably draw with that’ .”
The young artist threw away all of his painting supplies and started experimenting with sun painting instead. Luckily for him, his hometown of Golden, in Colorado, gets around 300 days of sun a year, so he has had a lot of practice in the last five years.
Holding a wide range of magnifying glass types a few feet away from his wooden canvas, Michael focuses the sun’s rays in a small point, which he expertly guides with his hands to scorch (烧焦) his designs into the wood. From natural landscapes and animal portraits, to romantic and heartwarming scenes and company logos, there’s nothing this talented artist can’t do as long as it’s sunny out and he
has his magnifying glass. However, he knows he should always take care and protect himself when working long hours, by covering his eyes with glasses, for example.
Michael claims that apart from the unusual medium, what makes his art special compared to painting and drawing is that the process is just as interesting as the result. “I am also a filmmaker and I realized that this was a ‘performance art’ and people have to see it to understand it and truly appreciate it,” he says. “When I’m working on large scales, people stop in amazement and stare at the bright light. I have to tell them to stop.”
Interestingly, his art form is very similar to pyrography, the art of painting with heat. Only instead of a soldering iron (焊铁), it uses concentrated sunlight.
29. Why did Michael feel excited on his trip along the Silk Road?
A. He made friends with many local people.
B. He found a new tool for painting.
C. He focused his paintings on ancient China.
D. He found an ancient magnifying glass.
30. What can we know about Michael from the text?
A. He succeeds because of years of hard work.
B. He moves his body quickly when painting.
C. He never wears glasses when painting.
D. He always paints out of his hometown.
31. What can we infer from Michael’s words in Paragraph 5?
A. People prefer Michael’s movies to his paintings.
B. Many curious people are injured by the bright light.
C. Michael wants to develop better skills in making films.
D. Seeing how Michael works helps appreciate his paintings.
32. What is the best title for this text?
A. Creating a new image
B. Inspiration from nature
C. Painting with the sun
D. The magical magnifying glass

Some 56 million years ago, things were looking up for our evolutionary ancestors. The dinosaurs had been gone for more than 10 million years, allowing early mammals to thrive (蓬勃发展). But then came a challenge: methane (甲烷), a greenhouse gas whose climate impact is 25 times more powerful than CO2’s, causing global temperatures to rise 5 to 8 ℃, and stayed high for almost 200,000 years. Another such warming event, known as a “hyperthermial (超高温),” followed two million years later, causing a temperature rise of about half the amount of the first.
A recent study focuses on how mammals adapted to these shocks, and how they could do so again in an era of human-caused climate change: by getting smaller.
“It is more efficient to cool off if you have a small body size,” said the study’s lead author, Abigail D’ Ambrosia. Scientists have long observed that birds and mammals in colder areas are bigger than their counterparts (对应的事物) in warmer areas.
Ms. D’ Ambrosia, a PhD student at the University of New Hampshire, investigated how mammals had responded to the second warming event 54 million years ago. She and her team searched for the teeth of mammals alive during that time to measure their body sizes. By focusing on tooth sizes, the researchers had found that an ancestor of today’s horses had gotten smaller by about 30 percent.
The authors of this study also focused on how Arenahippus pernix, the horse’s precursor (前身), responded like its ancestors had during the previous warming. They got smaller by an average of 14 percent.
During our current warming, temperatures may not rise as much as they did 56 million to 54 million years ago. But during our lifetime we will likely see noticeable warmer climates.
33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Birds and mammals in warmer areas are smaller than their counterparts in colder areas.
B. Early mammals made dinosaurs disappear from the earth.
C. Temperatures must continue rising as much as they did millions of years ago.
D. It’s unlikely for us to see noticeable warmer climates in our lifetime.
34. How does the author make his writing reliable?
A. By making predictions. B. By providing research results.
C. By stating arguments. D. By using mind pictures.
35. The text mainly tells us that .
A. it was not humans that caused the climate change
B. how scientists did research on mammals
C. we need to take care of the earth
D. as the earth got hotter, early mammals responded by getting smaller.

Long ago in the 1700s, “home” was used as a verb, meaning “to be guided to a destination.” So, when you home in on something you get closer to your goal. 36 And it has a very emotional connection for American English speakers. You can remember “home is where the heart is.” This expression means home is anywhere you feel love and comfort. It is a place where you belong, and often a place you consider your origin. In other words, “home” is not simply a building where you live — that’s a house. 37
Friends can also give you a home away from home. When you visit them, they may say to you: “Make yourself at home!” 38 Hotels know this about travelers. Many advertise that they will be a home away from home. This expression describes a place where everything is familiar and comfortable.
Sometimes, when we travel for a long time — especially if we are in a strange place — we can begin to feel sad. We miss our friends, family and usual environment so much that we become homesick. Some people become so unsettled when they are away from home that they stop leaving the house. 39 But you don’t have to be a homebody to relax and enjoy a peaceful moment no matter where you are. For example, let’s say you have been working on a stressful assignment for a year. Now, the work
is almost done. You can say you are in the home stretch (终点直道). In fact, we are in the home stretch of this episode (片段) of Words and Their Stories. We are at the last paragraph. So, we bring us on home with another song about home. 40
A. East or west, home is best.
B. They become homebodies.
C. But today, “home” is more often used as a noun.
D. There is a big difference between a house and a home.
E. That is something musicians say when they are finishing a performance.
F. This common expression means someone wants you to feel relaxed and welcome.
G. The family you came from isn’t as important as the family you are going to have.
