If everyone drives such a little car in the future, there will be less pollution in the air, there will be more parking space in cities, and the streets will be less crowded. The space now for one car of the usual size can hold at least three such little cars.‎ The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive. Driving will be safer, too, as these little cars can go only 65 kilometers an hour.‎ The cars of the future will be fine for going around the city, but they will not be useful for going far away. If the car is powered by electricity, it will have two batteries—one battery for the motor and the other for the horn (喇叭), signals (信号灯), etc. Little cars which are powered by gas will go 45 kilometers before needing to stop for more gas.‎ If big cars are still used along with the small ones, two sets of roads will be needed to set up in the future. Some roads will be used for the big, fast cars, and other roads will be needed for the small, slower ones.‎ ‎24 What’s the advantage (优势) of the small cars?‎ A. There won’t be so much pollution and the small cars won’t be so expensive as the big ones.‎ B. It will be safer to drive these small cars.‎ C. There will be more space for cars to park.‎ D. The small car with a speed of 65 kilometers an hour is much more useless than a car of the usual size.‎ C. A car of the usual size now is three times as big as the small car.‎ D. The little car will need more gas.‎ ‎27 The best title for this passage should be .‎ A. Cars for Tomorrow B. How to Drive Small Cars C. Big Cars and Small Cars D. Cars for Everyone C Compared to people with bad attitudes, people who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. “It’s possible that being upbeat helps the body fight illnesses,” says psychologist Sheldon Cohen, the study’s lead researcher.‎ ‎ In a previous study, Cohen and his colleagues put cold-causing viruses into the noses of 334 healthy adults. People who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop cold symptoms and were also less likely to mention symptoms to their doctors, even when medical tests discovered those symptoms. ‎ ‎ Those findings could explain the role positive feelings played, but it was still possible that a person’s personality is what matters. Evidence suggests that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic. This would mean that who we are, not how we feel, decides our chances of catching colds. ‎ ‎ To figure out which mattered more, the team interviewed 193 healthy adults. The researchers interviewed each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. At the end of the interviewing period, people got nose drops that contained either cold or flu viruses. Then, each person stayed in an isolated(隔离的)room for 5 or 6 days. ‎ ‎ The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get infected. Their symptoms, however, differed depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the previous 2 weeks. Among those who reported good moods and had been infected with the flu virus, 28 percent developed coughs and stuffy noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 41 percent of people who had been less cheerful. ‎ ‎ Scientists argue about whether negative emotions or positive emotions have a stronger impact on how healthy we are. For now, it won’t hurt to look on the bright side more often than not!‎ ‎28. The underlined word “upbeat” in the first paragraph probably means ‎ A. strong B. optimistic ‎ C. friendly D. independent ‎ ‎29. In the previous study, researchers found that _______.‎ A. cheerful people didn’t get infected with cold viruses B. a person’s attitude determined whether he would get sick C. medical tests couldn’t find cold symptoms in cheerful people ‎ D. a cheerful attitude may reduce the chances of getting ill ‎ ‎30. During the study, 193 healthy adults were told to report _____.‎ A. the feelings they experienced every day ‎ B. any cold symptoms that appeared every day ‎ C. their daily activities ‎ D. their daily state of health ‎31. It can be inferred that a person’s _______ has a big effect on how healthy we are. ‎ A. emotional state B. personality C. age D. exercise regime(方法)‎ D In 1863, the great novelist Jules Verne wrote a novel called Paris in the Twentieth Century. In the book he used the full power of his great ability to forecast the coming century. Unfortunately, the manuscript (手稿) was lost until his great-grandson happened to discover it lying in a safe where it had been carefully locked away for almost 130 years. Realizing what a treasure he had found, he arranged to have it published (出版) in 1994, and it became a bestseller at once. ‎ Back in 1863, kings still ruled the ancient world in Europe, with so many poor people performing backbreaking work in the fields. And steam power was just beginning to change the world. But Verne predicted that Paris in 1960 would have glass skyscrapers, air conditioning, TV, elevators, high-speed trains, gas-powered vehicles, and even something similar to the Internet. Verne described life in modern Paris almost without any mistakes. ‎ Just two years later Verne made another amazing prediction. He wrote From the Earth to the Moon, in which he predicted the details of the task that sent several astronauts (宇航员) to the moon more than 100 years later in 1969. He correctly predicted the size of the space capsule, the number of astronauts who would carry out the task, the length of time the journey would take, the weightlessness that the astronauts would experience, and the final landing in the ocean.‎ How was Jules Verne able to predict 100 years into the future successfully? Although he was not a scientist himself, Verne often turned to scientists, asking them questions about their opinions of the future. He collected a vast amount of information about the great scientific discoveries of his time. Verne realized that science would make it possible for many amazing things to appear in the future. The secret of his successful prediction was his belief in the power of science to change society. ‎ ‎32 Paris in the Twentieth Century is a novel that _____.‎ A. people thought little of at first B. took Jules Verne five years to finish C. didn’t sell well when published at first D. was published long after it was finished ‎33. The third paragraph is mainly about _____.‎ A. the requirements of being an astronaut ‎ B. what From the Earth to the Moon is about C. how From the Earth to the Moon was created D. the differences between the earth and the moon ‎34. According to the text, Jules Verne _____. ‎ A. showed strong interest in writing and science B. could predict what would happen to someone C. was well-known as both a novelist and a scientist D. had Paris in the Twentieth Century published in 1994‎ ‎35. What would be the best title for the text?‎ A. The early life of Jules Verne B. Jules Verne’s opinions about science C. Jules Verne: A writer ahead of his time D.
