As children, my sister and I thought every family was like that— every family had an unpredictable dad who was impossible to please and a praying mom who was there to protect the children. We were good children. Mom was always telling us we were, even if daddy couldn’t see it.‎ Then came the day we found something new and fun to do. We discovered we could draw pictures with chalk (粉笔) on our wooden front door. We could have lots of fun, so we set to work drawing and making lots of pretty pictures all over it. We had a great time. We decided to finish our pictures, knowing Mom would just love them.‎ The praise we expected did not come. We did not understand why, but we knew our parents were angry, and that we were in big trouble! Off we ran to find a place to hide. In our wooded yard it was not hard for two small children to find safety. Together, we hid behind a tree and did not move. Soon we heard the frightened voices of Mom and our neighbors calling out to us. We were afraid we would be found. The sun set, and it began to get dark, we heard another voice, one we recognized with great fear: our daddy. But there was something strangely different about it. In it we heard something we had never heard before: fear and despair. Our daddy with tears running down his face, prayed to God for the safe return of his girls.‎ Things were different after that. We had a new daddy; it was as if the old one had been buried that day in the yard. Our whole family had been changed by one piece of chalk.‎ 5. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.‎ A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases the difficulty, making it even harder for the blood to run and circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won't feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. Therefore, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don't keep your legs crossed.‎ Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause “pins and needles” sensation, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle. Luckily, this feeling may only last a minute or two.‎ So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.‎ ‎9. What can we learn about crossing one's legs?‎ A. It is a very bad social habit. ‎ B. It can make others feel uncomfortable.‎ C. It is usually practiced on purpose. ‎ D. It can do harm to people's health.‎ ‎10. According to the study, sitting with your legs crossed can______.‎ A. affect your blood pressure ‎ B. resist gravity effectively C. lead to heart attacks easily ‎ D. improve the function of legs ‎11. In the third paragraph “pins and needles” probably means______.‎ A. high blood pressure B. being a little bit tired C. serious muscle injuries D. slight discomfort and pains ‎ D I’m a strong believer that learning different languages makes you look incredibly good when you’re in a foreign country and can understand and speak the language.
