Many years ago in a small village, an old man was hired to clear the spring (泉水) up on the mountain. He patrolled (巡逻) the spring every day, and swept away all the leaves and other things that would dirty the fresh flow of water. Soon, beautiful swans (天鹅) came to the clear spring, and the village became a popular attraction for visitors.
Years passed. One evening the town leaders held a meeting. As they looked at the salary list, one of them said, “Why do we keep this old man on year after year? I don’t think we need him or his work.” Later, the old man was asked to leave.
For several weeks, nothing changed. By early autumn, the leaves began to fall off the trees, and the spring was covered with leaves. A few days later, the water was much darker. Only a few months after the old man left, all the swans left, as did the tourists. Disease reached deeply into the village.
Quickly, the leaders held a special meeting. Realizing their mistake, they rehired the old man. Then within a few weeks, the spring began to clear up. Soon new life returned to the village.
So, my friends, do you see? No matter how small your work or your life seems to be, never overlook it. Anything we can do will make a difference.

According to a growing number of studies, a completely unexpected thing has increasingly been worrying people --punctuation(标点符号).This might sound ridiculous at first back over your email and texting history. Were there times when you worry about whether you should use an exclamation point(感叹号)in a message or not? Have you ever received a message with no closing punctuation at all and wasted hours trying to puzzle out if you did anything to make the sender angry with you?
Once, not too long ago, we were all taught in English class that exclamation points should be used for only the most extreme and emotional situations. “When beginning to write articles for the newspaper, I was told that you get one exclamation point to use in your entire article. You could spend your one exclamation point on a headline like ' WAR OVER!'" says Julie Beck in the Atlantic.
Then texting and email came along. These media offer fewer choices to express slight differences of feeling than phone or face-to-face communication, so people started reaching for the exclamation points. Punctuation, it turns out, is like drugs. And where one exclamation point once worked to show warmth and sincerity, now you need three to achieve the same goal. And that's how we get to a world where we're all sending messages that look like they were written by an overexcited young man.
So is there any way out of the punctuation uncertainty? Probably not, say the experts. We're not giving up text-based communication anytime soon, and choosing a suitable tone is basic part of this form of communication. The best you can probably hope for is to understand you're not different from others--this sort of anxiety is not only understandable but also very common.
29. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By analyzing some facts.
B. By making a comparison.
C. By giving some examples
D. By answering some questions.
30. What do we know about the exclamation point according to Julie Beck?
A. It should be used widely.
B. It should be used carefully.
C. It should never be used in news.
D. It should only be used in the title.
31.What can be the result of the use of texting and email?
A. Exclamation points are more popular among young people.
B. Exclamation points have a different meaning in the media.
C. People use exclamation points more and more.
D. People are easier to express their feelings.
32.Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Punctuation matters!
B. New communication rules
C. How to use exclamation points
D. The anxiety over using punctuation
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

For better grades—use your brain!
If you're like most students, you probably started this new school year with an air of determination to study harder. Now science can help you. Recent discoveries in brain research point to better ways to learn.
Think of the last time you looked up a number in the telephone book and dialed it. Could you remember that number five minutes later? Probably not! 33 But if you can put the phone number into long-term memory, you'll remember that same phone number next week.
When you study, you transfer(转移) new information into long-term memory. Every time we learn something new, the structure of the brain actually changes, as we build new connections to information that we already know. 34
Brain researchers have discovered three key points for better study.
◎ 35 Your brain can process only a limited amount of information at one time, so don't try to remember every detail. When studying a textbook, look for titles and headings to show you the main ideas.
◎ Make the new brain connections stronger. 36 This is the most powerful way to transfer information from short-term to long-term memory. Another way is drawing a picture of the information, to make the visual(视觉的)part of the brain active.
◎ Give the new material time to soak in(渗入) --- your brain has to build new physical connections. 37 And cramming(突击式学习)the night before a big test doesn't help
A. Try to make an effort.
B. That's because it's in your short-term memory.
C. We know we will need the information in the future.
D. Find the most important information and organize it.
E. One method is to recite the ideas out loud in your own words.
F. For this reason, it's better to study for several short periods than one long one.
G. When there are more connections to the new information, it's easier to find it again.

W: Could you take me to the railway station? (1) I need to catch a train at 11:45.
M: Sure, but that’s quite soon. We should hurry. Are those two suitcases yours?
Text 2
W: Hello, is this Steve? I’m stuck in a traffic jam. (2) I’m afraid I won’t be able to get to the movie theater before seven o’clock.
M: It’s OK. I’ll be here waiting for you.
Text 3
W: What time does the film start?
M: Well, we can go at 5:30 or 8:30.
W: I’ve got to be home by ten o’clock, so half past eight is too late.
M: OK. It’s only half past four now. We can go at half past five. (3)
Text 4 (总结题)
M: Hey, Alice, I like your necklace.
W: Thanks! It’s a birthday gift from my daughter. I think it was quite expensive.
M: Well, it’s beautiful. Your daughter has good taste.
Text 5
M: Wasn’t it your birthday last Sunday? Did you go out for a meal?
W: Usually I do, but this year some friends invited me out for a boat ride on the river. (5) It was really fun! It was so much better than spending the day shopping.
Text 6
W: Yesterday’s meeting was so boring. (6) It just went on and on.
M: Really?
