When I first met George, I was in my early 30s, seeking a creative outlet(出路)
unrelated to boring housework and raising little ones. My children, then aged three
and five, were just entering kindergarten and school life. At 65, George had recently
retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby. For both of us, painting was ‘it’ and we
met at a local painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last until the day he
died.
George arrived in Australia as an immigrant from Britain with his wife and two
children. He worked hard, played hard, and had an opinion about everything. He
adored his wife, his family, and his friends. A slim and energetic man, George took
pride in his fitness and walked three kilometers every day.
As the only male in a painting class full of women, George ruled the roost and
we were his hens. He adored his singular role and looked after his brood(一窝雏鸡)
with the same attention he gave to everything.
He took to painting with great passion(热情), even transforming the spare bedroom
into a studio. A studio! His painting equipment was comprehensive. Ever practical,
George housed many of these items in a red metal tool box.

Microsoft PowerPoint is the world’s most common presentation tool. It
emerged from software company Forethought Inc. in the 1980s. Bob Gaskins was the
man behind it.
“I knew in the early 80s that there were as many as a billion, a thousand million
presentation slides being made per year just in America,” Gaskins says, “but they
were all made by hand and almost nobody was using computers to do them.”
“It was clear to me that here was a huge application worth billions and billions of
dollars a year that could be done on computers as soon as there was a revolution in the
kinds of computers that we had.”
Gaskins was onto something, but it was a hard sell at the time. The software
wouldn’t run on any existing personal computers. Anyone wanting to use it had to
buy a new machine. Even so, people bought personal computers for the first time in
order to be able to use PowerPoint, says Wired magazine journalist Russell Davies.
Davies explains that before PowerPoint, people used slides to convey
information to groups---but anyone creating a presentation had to send away to get
their materials made. It took a long time to do, was difficult to make changes and
because it was so expensive, only the most senior people in an organization got to do
it.
“PowerPoint,” Davies says, “made it possible for everyone in an organization to
stand up and say their piece.”
PowerPoint has helped turn us all into presenters---but it’s also been accused of
over-simplifying ideas and distracting(干扰)us from clear thinking.
Sarah Kaplan is a management professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman
School of Management. She has noticed that, rather than people asking for new
analysis or insights in meetings, they were asking for more PowerPoint slides.
Kaplan says that some CEOs, such as Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, have banned its use.
“ He felt, and I think many people feel, that PowerPoint became such an object of the
process that they lost the ideas inside of it and that is the risk.”

“We’re counting on you and your raised hands to bid for the street art selected
by the M.B.A. students and go home victorious!” said Arnaud Oliveux at the French
auction (拍卖) house Artcurial.
Mr. Oliveus walked theatrically across the stage and officially opened the second
edition of the charity auction Street for Kids. The event is organized by 33 students
who major in art management, with a focus on the international art market, at the Icart
School of Arts.
Over the past six months, as their final project, the fifth-year students planned
their first public auction. They persuaded famous street artists and galleries to donate
pieces; they drafted the communication strategy; they designed and built the
exhibition space.
Julien Garcia-Toudic, 22, was among the students who charged with collecting
the donated street art. He said, “It was for charity and it would be financing children’s
access to art.”
Their goal was to raise money for the Musee en Herbe, whose mission(使命) is
to bring art to children.
Founded more than 40 years ago, the 6400-square-foot space provides
exhibit-related activities for those “between the ages of 3 and 103.”
“We’re a little alien in the world of art,” said Sylvie Girardet, the museum’s
director. She was a graduate in art history and archaeology(考古学) when she created
the museum with two friends. At the time, she had been shocked to learn that the
majority of the French population did not visit museums.
