He loved life—especially when he could play a trick(玩笑) on somebody. At those times, his large body shook with laughter while he pretended(伪装) innocent surprise. But on a cold Saturday, Grandpa felt that God played a trick on him, and Grandpa wasn't laughing.‎ On this particular day, he was building some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage (孤儿院) abroad. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. He remembered putting them there that morning, so he drove back to the church. His search proved fruitless.‎ Suddenly, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His brand-new glasses were heading for India!‎ The Great Depression(经济萧条) was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.‎ ‎“It's not fair,” he told God as he drove home in sadness. “I've been very faithful in giving my time and money to your work, but now this.”‎ Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on vacation in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather's small church in Chicago. Grandpa and his family sat in their usual seats among the workers in the church.‎ ‎“But most of all,” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year.”‎ ‎“Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my coworkers and I were much in prayer about this. Then your boxes arrived. When my coworkers removed the covers, they found a pair of glasses lying on the top.” After a long pause, he continued, “Folks, when I tried on the glasses, I was able to see things clearly again. It was as though the glasses had been custom-made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”‎ The people working for the church listened, happy for the amazing glasses, but they thought the director surely must have confused(混淆) their church with another; they knew that there were no glasses on their list of items donated(捐赠) overseas.‎ But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized God had used him in an unusual way.‎ ‎24.Which of the following is NOT true about Grandpa according to the passage? A. He was an outgoing man. B. He had a large family to support. C. He sent the glasses to India on purpose D. He believed in God.‎ ‎25.The people in the church except Grandpa felt surprised at what the director said because ______. A. A. made specially B. made by a church C. made with the director’s agreement D. made by a carpenter ‎27.Which can be the best title of the passage? A. Grandfather's Life B. The Helpful Donations C. The Perfect Mistake D. An Impressive Speech C Alida Monaco doesn’t spend her summers doing the usual teenage work, like working at the mall. Instead, she’s studying.‎ It used to be that a summer job was considered a teenage thing. Today, Monaco, who has never had a summer job, is part of growing trend(趋势) teenagers concentrating on their studies, even during the summer. That’s down from 72% of Americans aged 16 to 19 who worked in July of 1978, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.‎ Fierce competition, older workers returning to the workforce and weak economic growth are all adding to the decrease of teenagers in the workforce. But as schoolwork grows increasingly heavy and homework eats up more time, data suggest the biggest reason why some teens won’t be working this summer is that they simply don’t have time.‎ For college-bound teens, some teachers even advise students not to waste time on a summer job. “Some of my students only have about six weeks off in the summer,” said Shannon Reed, a lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh and a former high school English teacher. “I could never advise that they get jobs during that short break. They should rest.”‎ Young people who don’t work may miss out on valuable skills that they’ll need later in life. Early work experiences teach reliability, financial intelligence, self-control and help people learn to deal with adult situations. But Monaco, who plans to attend Harvard, isn’t fazed by her lack of work experience. “Maybe I have missed out on a couple of life skills,” she said. “But I don’t think it will harm me in any way.”‎ ‎28.What is the trend of American teenagers?‎ ‎ A. They are becoming lazy.‎ B. They are becoming keen on doing holiday jobs.‎ C. They are focusing more on studies than on jobs.‎ D. They are becoming particular about holiday jobs.‎ 29. What is the third paragraph mainly about?‎ A. The reasons for teenagers giving up work.‎ B. The fierce competition teenagers face.‎ C. The structure of America’s workforce.‎ D. The effects of America’s weak economy.‎ 29. What’s Shannon Reed’s attitude towards the new trend?‎ A. Uncaring B. Favorable C. Worried D. Doubtful ‎31. What does the underlined word “fazed” in the last paragraph mean?‎ A. motivated B. helped C. bothered D. confused D ‎ It turns out that happy cows produce better milk. The finding is not new. The California Milk Advisory Board has been saying it for years. But now a team of researchers is helping farmers have happier herds.‎ ‎ The researchers are visiting milk farms and showing farmers how to make their cows live better. Their advice and information is available around the world on their website.‎ ‎ One important area for discussion is how to prevent leg pain, a condition also called lameness. Lameness impacts everything a cow gets to do in her day. It impacts the way she rests, the way she milks, the way she eats, her ability to reproduce and finally her ability to stay on the farm. A bed of sand can provide a good place for cows to lie down during the day. The deep, soft bedding of sand creates an environment where cows can rest half the day, and that is extremely important to cows.‎ The researchers advise farmers to provide bigger stalls, the areas where cows are kept in a barn. They also say farmers should use more fans to keep the animals cool, and feed all their cows at the same time.‎ ‎ And researchers say it is a good idea to keep cows with their usual group of friends when it comes time for them to give birth. This helps lessen the stress for the cows.‎ Mitch Breunig owns the Mystic Valley Dairy in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. He says he used the advice to improve the conditions for his 400 cows. Since he made the changes,Breunig says the dairy's production has increased. His cows have gone from producing ‎ 49 liters of milk a day to almost 57 liters.‎ ‎ Also, his cows have fewer injuries and live about a year longer than before. That is good for the animals- and for people, too.‎ ‎32. Why are the researchers visiting milk farms?‎ A. To improve their cows’ living conditions. ‎ B. To gather information from cow farmers.‎ C. To create new cow farms for better milk.‎ D. To help cow farmers prevent a cow disease.‎ ‎33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?‎ A The harm of leg pain and how to solve it.‎ B. How to make a bed of sand for cows.‎ C. The proper atmosphere cows need.‎ D. What cows need most in their life.‎ ‎34. What should farmers do when cows give birth?‎ A. Feed them at the same time. ‎ B. Leave them near their friends.‎ C. Provide bigger room for them, ‎ D. Use more fans to keep them cool.‎ ‎35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ A. Advice on How to Keep Cows More Comfortable B. Cow Farmers Welcome Researchers to Their Farms C. Ways to Make Cows Produce More Milk than Usual ‎ D.
