The more I did these tasks, the more disconnected I felt from the seniors. Though I felt bad for them, I did not want to interact with them.‎ Then one rainy day, I met Colonel Hemsworth. He invited me to his table and asked for some company. I regarded this as another boring task. However, when I ‎ listened to his stories, I learned that he was a brilliant war veteran(老兵),and I found his tales interesting.‎ After my brief talk with the Colonel, I realized that I shared common characters with all the seniors. I felt like an oxygen molecule(分子)---ready to form a relationship—rather than an isolated gas.‎ I met with many learned senior citizens who shared their experiences and wisdom. No longer did I walk aimlessly down the hallways. I found myself enjoying talking with these people as I learned their histories. Why hadn't I realized sooner that volunteer work could enlighten me?‎ Some people argue that volunteering and working for change does not help. However, they fail to realize that the world is constantly changing and humans must adapt My experience at Weyrich Health Center has taught me that refusing to change one's views and accept new ones leads to short-term goals that finally disappear. Communication with others is an important part of life. Volunteering is not just a requirement or a way to improve your resume, it is a time for service and personal growth.‎ Now I enjoy volunteering my time surrounded by seniors who bring history alive for me. By communicating with them, I have developed into a more dynamic person.‎ ‎4. What's the author's initial(最初的)attitude towards volunteering?‎ A. Positive              B. Satisfied.              C. The author would like to be an oxygen molecule.‎ B. the author wanted to do a chemical experiment with gas.‎ C. The author imagined himself to be part of isolated gas.‎ D. The author had desire to communicate with the seniors.‎ ‎7. What does the sixth paragraph mainly tell us?‎ A. Other people's attitude towards volunteering.‎ B. The importance of communicating with others.‎ C. The lessons the author has learned from volunteering.‎ D. The important meaning of humans adapting to changes.‎ C It’s hard to talk to dad sometimes. His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through. You could never break his hard shell and get to know him. And he seemed to want to stay that way too.‎ But a year ago when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit. I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible. I was facing serious problems and I wanted to know whether he had faced them before and how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine. In desperation(绝境), it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key, so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it.‎ Two weeks later ,it showed up in my inbox: a much-thought, three-page letter. Dad, a 68-year-old retired technologist and grandfather of four, had carefully considered my message, and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he made in career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that “life will still find its right track despite many of its twists and turns.”‎ I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late. I cried because at 33, in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simple: I just had to hit “Send.”‎ We’ve since had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough stuff more manageable and life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to dad sometimes, but I’m glad I found a way to talk to mine.‎ ‎8. The author’s dad can be best described as ______.‎ A. selfish and lonely B. quiet and caring C. optimistic and careless D. indifferent and serious ‎9. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 can be best replaced by”______”.‎ A. show his true self B. become more optimistic ‎ C. draw the curtain D. clear the misunderstanding ‎10. Which of the following is NOT true?‎ A. My dad’s email was quickly written. ‎ B. I was moved when reading the email.‎ C. The email contained much information. ‎ D. I wished I could have consulted him earlier.‎ ‎11. What can be a suitable title for the text?‎ A. My Mysterious Dad B. Emails From My Dad ‎ C. A Man of Few Words D. Communication Is the Best policy D If you ever visit an English village, make sure to look out for Morris dancing. Undoubtedly one of the strangest traditions of English culture, Morris dancing is a form of folk dancing that dates back to the 15th century. If you ever get the opportunity, you really have to see it.‎ Men and women wearing old-fashioned, shabby clothing dance in the streets of towns and villages across the country during the holiday periods. Women wear long, frilly(有褶皱边的) skirts and men wear short trousers with bells attached to them. They dance to traditional folk music which is often played on traditional musical instruments.‎ Some groups carry heavy black sticks which they beat against each other while they dance. Other groups wave handkerchiefs in the air while they perform. The dances are usually performed near a pub so that when it’s over, the dancers and audience can sing some traditional folk songs over a pint of beer. The celebrations will often continue long into the night, by which point most people are too drunk to think about performing again.‎ Morris dancing is a great English tradition but it’s facing a big crisis. As the years go by, fewer and fewer young people are joining Morris dancing groups. The dancers are getting older and older and eventually, if nothing is done to change this trends, the tradition will die out within the next few decades.‎ If you’ve ever had the fortune to see Morris dancing, you may understand why teenagers aren’t rushing to sign up. Putting it to the point, it’s not exactly the coolest thing for an 18-year-old to be doing. Why dress up in bells and funny costumes when ‎ you could be going clubbing? Or playing sport? Or doing anything else?[]‎ However, it would be a great shame to lose such a fun and lively part of England’s history and culture. It’s important to look after some traditions and customs especially when it’s something as harmless and happy as Morris dancing. So here’s a toast to the next generation of would-be Morris dancers! Let’s hope they don’t leave it too late.‎ ‎12. What is the passage mainly about?‎ ‎ A. The origins of Morris dancing B. The popularity of Morris dancing ‎ C. The introduction of Morris dancing D. The protection of Morris dancing ‎13. What do we know about Morris dancers?‎ A. They dance in pubs late into the night ‎ B. They sing folk music while they dance ‎ C. They perform with sticks or handkerchiefs D. They wear long dresses with bells attached ‎ ‎14. What is the present situation of Morris dancing?‎ A. It is keeping pace with people’s demand B. It is losing appeal among young people ‎ C. It is witnessing great changes in history D. It is being criticized by modern people ‎15. What does the author think about Morris dancing?‎ A. It deserves more attention B. It helps to stay healthy C. It is too old-fashioned D. It is fun for teenagers 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ In our daily life, we have developed a lot of habits, such as, eating habit, study habit, reading ‎ habit, etc. However, taking the time to develop a sleep habit is probably the last thing on your  mind and some sleep advice simply can’t be forgotten. __16___.‎ Watching TV until you fall asleep It has nothing to do with what you watch —TV news isn’t a better pre-sleep choice than TV ‎ series.     17  . The bright light keeps you awake all the night. So even if you nod off (in front of the TV, for example), you probably won’t stay asleep for long.‎ Sleeping with pets ‎ __18___. After graduating with high school, I went to Beijing and started teaching in a kindergarten. I had never been to a city big as Beijing before. I fall in love with Chinese food. I would eat out at the different restaurant every night and practice my Chinese with local citizen. I suppose the air was clean back home, but my life in China was much more interesting. My most favorite part about living in Beijing was something which much other foreigners didn’t like at all—the noise. I loved walking outside my door and hear the sounds of city life.
