When I was a little child, my parents divorced, making my mother a single parent. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life,“Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to do it badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school—walking on my own!
When the Great Depression(大萧条)occurred, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the family. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.
My real change occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was
angry that the second-class hotel charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I decided to open a motel(汽车旅馆)for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mother was one of my strongest supporters. We experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world—Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.
41.When Kemmons was a little child, what his mother usually told him was .
A. funny. B. touching C. fighting D. encouraging
42.From the author’s view, who played the most important part in making him walk back to school again?
A. Mother. B. Teachers C. Friends D. Relatives.
43.According to the passage, what made Kemmons start a motel by himself?
A. His previous business success of various levels.
B. His terrible experience in the hotel.
C. His mom’s support.
D. His wife’s suggestion.
44. In your opinion, which of the following best describes Kemmons’ mother?
A. Modest, helpful, and hard-working.
B. Careful, helpful and beautiful.
C. Loving, supportive and strong-willed.
D. Strict, sensitive and supportive

In China, Double Eleven Shopping Day is approaching. And there is a similar case in the United States—Black Friday. It has been regarded as the beginning of the holiday shopping
season. Although it’s not an official holiday, millions of employers give their employees the day off, and many people use that day to get a jump-start on their holiday shopping. A similar day in Canada and Great Britain is called “Boxing Day”.
Black Friday has become somewhat of a marketing sensation in recent years. Since 2005, it has been the busiest shopping day of the year. To lure shoppers, retailers (零售商) routinely open their doors as early as 4 a.m. and offer special sales and promotions to the shoppers that arrive early. Some of the special deals offered by stores are only available in limited quantities. That is why some shoppers intent on getting the best deals often camp out in front of stores overnight so that they’ll be the first in line when the doors open.
But why is it called Black Friday? Historians believe the name started in Philadelphia in the mid-1960s. Bus drivers and police used “Black Friday” to describe the heavy traffic that would block city streets the day after Thanksgiving as shoppers headed to the stores.
Businesses, however, didn’t like the negative tone associated with the “Black Friday” name. In the early 1980s, a more positive explanation of the name began to circulate. According to this alternative explanation, Black Friday is the day when retailers finally begin to turn a profit for the year. In accounting terms (会计行业), operating at a loss is called being “in the red” because accountants traditionally used red ink to show negative amounts. Positive amounts were usually shown in black ink. Thus, being “in the black” is a good thing because it means stores are operating at a profit.
Recently, for those who are too busy to shop on Black Friday or who just don’t want to fight the crowds, the Monday following Black Friday has become known as Cyber Monday (网络星期一) for the many online deals.
45. On Black Friday, the Americans .
A. don’t have to go to work as usual
B. look exactly like the Canadians

D. It probably brings them more money.
48. The author writes this passage in order to .
A. state the development of Cyber Monday

After her first class, Jessica and six other girls aged 9 to 13 said that sewing was fun, cool and challenging.

Another member of the class, Kelsey Oen, 9 years old, needed time to get used to her machine, but soon she could use it well. By the end of the class, Kelsey was happy and wearing her new hat.

You might think people all over the United States have Wi-Fi----wireless Internet service---and mobile phones. But there is no such service in Green Bank, West Virginia, a tiny town four hours from the U.S. capital, Washington D.C. Fewer than 150 people live in Green Bank, which has two churches, an elementary school and a public library. It is also home to the largest radio telescope in the world.
There is a ban on Wi-Fi in Green Bank, along with anything else that can create electromagnetic(电磁的)waves. Officials say the waves could disturb the signals the telescope receives.
For many Americans, a visit to Green Bank is a little like returning to the 1950s. To get there, you must read road signs---because there is no GPS service in the town. People can connect with the Internet through telephones, but wireless service is not allowed.
The observatory(天文台)is one of the largest employers in the area. The federal National Science Foundation(NSF) spends about $8.2 million a year to operate the observatory, telescope and educational center.
Jonah Bauserman is a technician. If he supposes there is signal that is not allowed in the zone, he drives to the house where the signal is coming from and checks it. But once a week, when the device is cleaned, some banned devices are allowed near it.
People in the town respect the work of the scientists. And they say they are happy to live without Wi-Fi and mobile phones. “You know, instead of sitting here on our phones and other devices we’re out fishing and hunting and going to each other’s houses.” Everyone knows each other and communication is almost always face-to-face.
49. What will you see when you pay a visit to Green Bank?
A. GPS service
B. Road signs
C. Cell phone towers
D. Radio-controlled toys
53. What is Jonah Bauserman’s duty in his work?

六、书面表达
These days watching Tik Tok Short Video becomes popular among teenagers who spend
their free time watching and making comments on it.
Some teenagers are obsessed with Tik Tok Short Video, which make them lag behind. In addition, watching Tik Tok Short Video does harm to their development both physically and mentally. Some videos shown on Tik Tok Short Video can’t help them form a good outlook for, which strongly influenced full development of them.
From my point of view, they should take up beneficial hobbies, which are good to them. For example, they can go fishing to become more patient and focused. Doing sports is a pretty good way to make full use of their free time.
