第二部分阅读理解 (共两节,满分60分)
A
One summer day my father sent me to buy wire and fencing for our farm in Marion
County, South Carolina. At 16, I liked nothing better than getting behind the wheel of our Chevy pickup, but this time it made me low in spirits. My father had told me I’d have to ask for credit at the store.
Sixteen is a prideful age, when a young man wants respect, not charity. It was 1976, and the ugly shadow of racism was still a fact of life. I’d seen my friends ask for credit and then stand, head down, while a store owner questioned whether they were “good for it”. I knew black youths just like me were watched like thieves by the store clerk each time they went into a grocery.
My family was honest. We paid off our debts. But before harvest, cash was short. Would the store owner trust us?
At Davis Brothers General Store, Buck Davis stood behind the register, talking to a middle-aged farmer. When I brought my purchases to the register, I said carefully, “I need to put this on credit.”
The farmer gave me a cynical look. But Buck's face didn’t change. “Sure,” he said easily. “Your daddy is always good for it.” He turned to the other man. “This here is one of James William’s sons.”
The farmer nodded in a friendly way. I was filled with pride. James William’s son. Those three words had opened a door to an adult’s respect.
That day I discovered the good name my father and mother had earned brought our whole family the respect of our neighbors. The desire to keep the respect of a good name urged me to become the first in our family to go to university. Eventually, it gave me the initiative to start my own successful public relations firm in Washington, D.C.
21. Why was the author unwilling to buy wire and fencing at that time?
A. Because he was a farmer’s son. B. Because he had to buy things on credit.
C. Because he was a black teenager. D. Because he was in low spirits that day.
22. What can be inferred according to the underlined sentence in Para. 5?
A. The farmer was very happy to see the author.
B. The farmer was an old acquaintance of the author’s.
C. The farmer looked down upon the author.
D. The farmer took pride in the author.
23. What do the three words “James William’s son” mean to the author?
A. A heavy burden of his future life. B. Good luck for his family.
C. A golden chance of his own career. D. Total trust in him.
24. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. The Power of a Good Name. B. A Good Name from Parents.
C. Debts of an Honest Family. D. Ugly Shadow of Racism.

Vacation time allows you to experience physical and emotional benefits. You may have many things on your to-do list and truly want to do your best job and feel accomplished in the end of the day. But you also want to stay healthy and energetic. That’s why you’re in need of a vacation. Once you’ve dedicated all your time and energy to work and daily tasks, though, leaving them for a while doesn’t seem like the right thing to do. You may think that things will get out of control, or that you’ll be left behind and will have to hurry even more after that.
But these are minor issues considering the actual benefits of vacations. Here are some of them.
Taking a vacation helps you reduce stress.
There’s nothing like leaving the stressful environment of your daily life and entering a new world, full of excitement. The study carried out by American Sociological Association shows that a bigger number of vacations leads to a decline in the psychological unhappiness of people.
It helps you grow spiritually.
One of the most important aspects of having a vacation is that you get to know yourself better. You learn new things throughout the journey, but you also experience changes on the inside. And once you get back to reality, you can benefit from these by trying new techniques to be more productive in life and in business, for example.
You improve your mental health.
It’s great for your brain too. Seeing new places and putting yourself in an unfamiliar environment are great for expanding your horizons, but it also improves your thinking and creativity.
You connect with nature.
According to a study from the University of Exeter Medical School in Britain, being closer to green space improves your mental health right away, and that effect can be sustained(保留) for longer. All these are great. And people who frequently travel (even if it’s not abroad), live a much happier life and are more productive.
25. People may not like to take vacations because ____________.
A. they think it a waste of time and money
B. they worry about their tired bodies
C. they believe they will fall behind in their work
D. they feel no sense of achievement
26.According to the passage, the most beneficial thing from vacations is ____________.
A.to contribute to your spiritual growth
B.to have a broader view of the world
C to be more productive in life
D.to live a longer and happier life
27.After having vacations, you will __________.
A. feel accomplished B get out of control
C feel less stressed D work more hurriedly
C
Some college students may wonder why their school asks them to take a class in philosophy when they are seeking a degree in physics. But studying several different subjects in addition to a student’s chosen major is the main idea behind the liberal arts (文科) education.
Critics say liberal arts degrees have less value because they fail to help students find good-paying positions right after college. However, more experts suggest the liberal arts education has greater value than most people realize.
Ben Austin used to study physics, but later he became a writer. He says it was the liberal arts skills he learned in college that helped him get the job, but not just those related to physics. “It taught me to think about the world, how our systems work in a different way, how to be able to think more comparatively and a way to think with sympathy for others.”
Students with more technical training often find good jobs after college. Liberal arts
graduates have skills that are useful in different ways, like writing, reading comprehension, problem-solving, working well with others and critical thinking. Graduates with more technical degrees often struggle with such skills. Their education has taught them to carry out specific jobs, but little else.
Edwin Koc, the senior director of research, says the college experience is about exploration and discovery. But students should be told that nothing is promised to them. “Not everybody’s going to succeed. You have the idea that college is the golden ticket; everybody should get a college education. The fact of the matter is that in general it is true. You’re going to be more successful in your life if you have a college education than if you do not. But there is no guarantee, regardless of the academic major that you choose, that it will come true.”
28. What is the attitude of some science students towards arts degrees?
A. supportive B. objective C. indifferent D. doubtful
29. What does the example of Ben Austin show?
A. Liberal arts education has great value.
B. Writing contributes to his learning of physics.
C. Liberal arts degrees have little value.
D. Physics helps him understand the world.
30. Where are students with liberal arts degrees strong?
A. They have skills in specific fields. B. They think considerately and critically.
C. They earn more early in their career.
D. They can find jobs right after graduation.
31. What can we infer from what Edwin said?
A. Employment depends on your academic major.
B. The college experience is to explore your career.
C. A college education won’t guarantee your success.
D. College is a golden opportunity to succeed.
D
Recently, while reading John Sayles’s A Moment in the Sun and still not knowing what it was about, Michelle Ginder made a conscious decision to put down the book. She moved on to something more appealing, reading the Game of Thrones’ series. “It felt so good,” she says.
“There was so much guilt associated with quitting, but when I finally did it, it was liberating.”
In the age of the e-reader, dropping a book has never been easier: It doesn’t even require getting up to grab another off the shelf. But choosing to end a relationship with a book remains strangely anxious, a decision filled with guilt.
“It goes against how we’re built,” says Matthew Wilhelm, a clinical psychologist in Union City, Calif. “There is a tendency for us to view objects as ‘finished’ or ‘whole’ even though they may not be. This motivation is very powerful and helps to explain anxiety around unfinished activities.”
Readers aged 16 and older average 17 books a year, according to Pew Research Center data. Ms. Ginder used to read an average amount. But using her new approach to reading, she reads up to 31 books a year. She has about 10 books ready to begin on her shelf or Kindle at any time. When she drops one, she simply pulls up another in seconds.
Kindle readers abandon books frequently, according to Ms. Ginder and other readers. Sara Nelson, an editorial director of books and Kindle at Amazon.com, says she believes that e-readers haven’t been given so much license to stop, but the ability to dip in and out of books, depending on their mood.
Ms. Haber at the Oprah magazine says, “If you come to a book at the wrong time, it won’t connect.” She started and stopped Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections a few times before getting completely absorbed in it, and owes her ability to finally finish the novel to trying it while on vacation. Reading it outside her regular life, she says, gave the book a new meaning.
32. What’s the major function of the first paragraph?
A. To state Ginder’s conscious decision. B. To introduce the main topic.
C. To summarize the whole passage. D. To compare two books.
33. Ms. Ginder felt guilty when stopping reading A moment in the sun because .
A. she couldn’t understand what this book was about
B. she felt so good after putting down the book
C. it was hard to end a relationship with a book
D. she felt anxious about unfinished activities
34. Probably Haber’s reading experience tells us .
A. to dip into a book several times B. to stop reading a book at any time
C. to start a book in the right mood D. to focus on reading in our regular life
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. How many books should we read in a year?
B. Why do e-readers frequently abandon books?
C. Is it necessary to finish a book at a time?
D. Why is leaving a book half-read so hard?

附录 2:录音原文
Text 1 M: Have you seen my blue sports shirt?
W: I think it’s still in the washing machine. You’ll probably have to keep wearing that green T-shirt until the wash is done. Sorry about that.
Text 2 W: Hey kids! What are you doing in my yard?
M: I’m sorry. We were playing baseball, and our ball is in your yard.
W: I see. You are lucky. My dog wasn’t in the yard. Next time, just knock on the door, OK?
Text 3 W: I’d like to withdraw 100 dollars from my savings account. I need to pay my gas bill. M: Could you tell me your account number and last name?
W: My last name is Hu, and my account number is written on the back of this envelope.
Text 4 W: What seems to be the problem?
4 M: My throat hurts, and I can’t stop coughing.
W: It sounds like you’ve caught a cold. Here’s a prescription for some medicine. You should stay home and rest. Make sure you drink plenty of water.
Text 5 M: I meant to turn in my homework, but I left it on my desk at home. I’ll have to bring it to class tomorrow.
W: Are you serious? Not again!
Text 6 M: I’m so excited about this trip. We haven’t had a vacation for several months.
W: I know. This is going to be a great week. I have always wanted to see Disneyland.
M: And I want to revisit the Oriental Pearl Tower and go to my Shanghai University class reunion. What time is our flight?
W: It’s in a few hours. We should really be on the way to the airport already. What time is our car supposed to arrive?
M: How would I know? I thought you ordered a taxi.
W: Oh, no! We’ll never get a taxi at this time of day. Let’s see if our neighbors can give us a ride.
Text 7 W: What are you doing? You look like you’re trying to make a wall out of these books! M: I’m getting ready for a job interview. I want to know everything I can before my interview on Friday.
W: Why don’t you just look up “Bank of China” on the Internet?
M: I’ve already spent all day yesterday doing that. But I realized that I need to know more about banking, so I’m spending my Sunday reading up.
W: Surely you can find more information about bank loan officers on the web.
M: Everyone is going to use the Internet to prepare. I think if I read a lot, I’ll do better in the interview. I want to know more than the other applicants.
Text 8 M: May I help you find something?
5
W: I’m not sure about this red dress. I am going to my high school reunion this summer, and I want something to make me look young and successful.
M: I think this black dress will be perfect. It’s quite beautiful, and the color suits you well.
W: That is nice, but I’m afraid it’s out of my price range.
M: Perhaps you’d like to try something from this corner of the store. All the dresses on this shelf are on sale.
W: Wow! Sixty percent off the original price! That seems too good to be true.
M: We’re making room for the summer collection. That’s why you can get such a good deal. I think this blue dress would be perfect for your reunion.
W: I do like it. I don’t have time to try it on, though. Can I buy it now and then just return it later if I don’t like it?
M: I’m sorry, but I’m afraid our sale items cannot be returned.
W: I think I’ll just buy it anyway. If it’s too small, I’ve still got two months to lose weight. I’m sure I can fit into it.
Text 9 M: I’d like to send this package to Canada. Do you think it will arrive before the weekend? W: Not by regular mail. If you’re willing to pay for express shipping, it will definitely get there before Saturday. Let’s see how much it weighs.
M: It’s mostly books, so it’s quite heavy. W: Yes, it’s over five pounds. The express shipping rate will be about thirty dollars.
M: Thirty dollars?! I’m afraid that’s more than I planned for. But I have to get these books to my sister before her classes start next week.
W: Well, it’s only Tuesday, so you could send them First Class. That would only cost you ten dollars, and the package should arrive in three to five business days.
M: But in that case, they might not arrive until next week, right?
W: I’m afraid that’s a possibility. With First Class mail, we can only guarantee delivery by next Tuesday.
M: Well, I guess I’ll have to pay for the overnight shipping and hope my sister pays me back.
6
W: OK. You said this mostly contains books. Any batteries, liquids, or explosives in the package? M: Of course not.
W: Good. Your total comes to twenty-nine dollars and fifty cents. Your tracking number is on the receipt.
Text 10 Welcome to Freshman Orientation Week. We have some fun activities planned for you, and we also want to make sure we answer all your questions. More than anything, we want you to make friends, enjoy yourself, and become part of the Smith University family. You’ve all received a backpack with some free school supplies. Did you notice that the backpacks come in six different colors? That’s because you’ll be divided into six different teams. Look for the flag that matches your backpack color. If you have an orange backpack, you should go stand under the orange flag. For those with blue backpacks, you’ll want to join the blue team. We also have yellow, red, green, and black teams. We want you to mix with other new students and find new friends. Today, your team will take part in a race to find seven different university services on campus. You should find all the places on the list. Make sure you take a picture of yourself at each place, and come back here when you’re done. The first team to finish will win free gift cards to the university bookstore. Now that you’re in your groups, we have a few more instructions. Choose one person to be your leader and another to be your photographer. And remember that even if you don’t finish the whole list, be back here – the university cafeteria – by twelve o’clock. Now, let’s start our race. Ready? On your marks, get set … go!
