Billionaire Bill Gates has offered the many thousands of graduates some career and life advice. Over a series of 14 tweets in his Tweeter posted last Monday, the world’s richest man used the words “impact”, “happiness” and “progress”. He did not mention money. Instead, he told the graduates what jobs he would be looking for if he started out today.
“AI (artificial intelligence), energy and bio-sciences are promising fields where you can make a huge influence”, he wrote. Earlier this year, Gates---who famously dropped out of Harvard to found Microsoft---said that artificial intelligence had “ phenomenal” potential, and “anything connected with that would be an exciting lifetime career.” In the same speech at Columbia University, he said there is a huge growing demand in the energy field to develop reliable, cheap and clean energy.
As well as urging new graduates to surround themselves with people who challenge you, teach you, and push you to be your best self, Gates reminded them to think of others, especially the less fortunate.
He wrote that it had taken him decades to learn about the world’s worst unfairness and described this lack of early understanding as his one big regret. “You know more than I did when I was your age,” he wrote, “ You can start fighting unfairness, whether down the street or around the world sooner.”
He finished by asking graduates to consider the progress human has already made, saying that he believe the world is getting better. “ That matters because if you think the world is getting better, you want to spread the progress to more people and places.”

Photos of eight-year-old Wang Fuman, nicknamed by “Snowflake Boy” in Yun Nan, shared by his principal on Tuesday, showed the boy has a red face from the low temperatures and apparently did not wear enough clothes to keep warm. He also suffered from frostbite. He stood alone with his white hair and eyebrows while other classmates behind were clearly amused and laughing. The picture drew widespread attention around the whole world. Many netizens were sympathetic to the boy’s difficulties, with many Mircoblog users giving comments under the report.
Just after the report, a donation of 100,000 yuan was sent to his Primary School. Constantly, help still pours in for the Chinese boy. But the local authorities call on others to pay attention to other similar rural areas and give them timely aid. In China, there are still so many children just like Fuman living by himself with parents migrating to cities for lively hood.
Boy’s hair is completely FROZEN after he walked an hour to school on a harsh winter morning in rural (and there was no heating when he got there)
l The third-grade pupil in Yunnan, China, walks 2.8 miles to school every day
l He braved minus nine degree weather yesterday morning to sit an exam
l His hair and eyebrows had turned into icicles when he aimed at the school
---Abstracted from Daily Post
I have tears in my eyes reading this… Poor little soul doesn’t even have a hat or gloves, and I can’t imagine how cold he must have felt. But he did it! Wish the little boy all good things in life. Hope he become a brilliant adult and success in life and happiness.
---Mng.PL, Mauntius, 19 hours ago
This kid is amazing. If I were him, I probably would have frozen to death. And this is why China will rule the world soon! He’ll fight a war tomorrow for his motherland!!! Take note you poor snowflake students of the UK. If this happened in the UK, they would arrive to find the school closed. Our kids are too soft!!!
---Honest John, Birmingham, 18 hours ago
He walked an hour in that weather and still got 99% for the math exam. Wow. With such an attitude and perseverance, I hope that he succeeds in life and gets all the good things that he deserves. Now he is not a snowflake.

Dreams can be familiar and strange, fantastical or boring, but some dreams might be connected to the mental processes that help us learn. In a recent study, scientists found a connection between nap time dreams and better memory in people who were learning a new skill.
In the study, 99 college students between the ages of 18 and 30 each spent an hour on a computer, trying to get through a virtual maze (逃宫). The maze was difficult, and the study participants had to start in a different place each time they tried, making it even more difficult. They were also told to find a particular picture of a tree and remember where it was.
For the first 90 minutes of a five - hour break, half of the participants stayed awake and half were told to take a short nap. Participants who stayed awake were asked to describe their thoughts. Participants who took a nap were asked about their dreams after sleep and they were awakened within a minute of sleep to describe their dreams.
Stickgold, a neuroscientist, wanted to know what people were dreaming about when their eyes weren't moving during sleep.Four of the 50 people who slept said their dreams were connected to the maze. Some dreamed about the music that had been playing when they were working; others said they dreamed about seeing people in the maze. When these four people tried the computer maze again, they were able to find the tree faster than before their naps.
Stickgold suggests the dream itself doesn’t' help a person learn, it’s the other way around. He suspects that the dream was caused by the brain processes associated with learning.
All four of the people who dreamed about the task had done poorly the first time, which makes Stickgold wonder if the dreams show up when a person finds a new
task particularly difficult. People who had other dreams, or people who didn’t' take a nap, didn't show the same improvement.
32. What were the participants of the experiment asked to do before having a short nap?
A. To stay in adifferent place in the maze.
B. To design a complex virtual maze to get through.
C. To experience the experiment and try to remember something.
D. To get through a virtual maze on a computer from the same place.
33. What can we learn from the text?
A. Participants who took a nap were required to express their thoughts.
B. Participants who dreamed about films could finish the task more easily.
C. Participants whose dreams linked with the maze could find the tree faster.
D. Participants who dream may encourage themselves to invent something new.
34. What can we infer from Stickgold?
A. every person may dream about what they learned.
B. people's brain processes may be connected with their learning in dreams.
C. once people's eyes stop moving, they are sure to dream about something.
D. no matter how fantastical or boring, dreams are connected with people's life.
35. What is the best title for this text?
A. Dreaming Makes Sense B.Not All Dreams Are True
C.Dreams Are Strange D. Stickgold, a Dream Expert
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s well-known by all the people to greet friends with a smile and a wave. 36 However, what happens if your face and body send mixed messages? Would someone tend to believe the look on your face or the way you behave?
Recently, scientists have dealt with these questions. They found that when a person is staring at your face, he might not believe what he sees if your body doesn’t match the feeling that your face shows. 37 Previous study had showed that the tone of a person’s voice can be more important than the words spoken. For example, most
people are more likely not to believe a person who says in a flat voice, “I’m so excited.”
When talking about emotions conveyed by facial expressions and body language, most scientists suspected that the face was more important. To test if this was true, psychologists from the Netherlands and Boston showed people a number of pictures of isolated faces and isolated bodies that showed anger or fear. 38
An angry face had low eyebrows and tight lips. A frightened face had high eyebrow and a slightly open mouth. 39 A scared body had arms forward and shoulders square, as if ready to fight back.
These results told the researchers that mixed messages can confuse people. Even when people pay attention to the face, body language surely influences the emotion they read.
40 And if you want to be understood it helps to avoid sending mixed messages.
A. Studying such mixed messages is nothing new for scientists.
B. So, your body language is important for telling people your feelings.
C. Scientists feel new to study the mixed message that puzzles people.
D. An angry body had arms back and shoulders at an angle, as if ready to fight.
E. Body language can sometimes be misunderstood in different culture backgrounds.
F. They also showed pictures where angry or scared faces were paired with angry or scared bodies.
G. When doing this, your face and body work together to show your friends that you are happy to see them.

写作范文
Dear Peter,
Our Students’ Union held a Charity Sales on the afternoon of Jan. 5th,2018 to raise money for the needy children in the poverty-stricken areas. These efforts are made to support these poor children to continue their education or improve their living.
Second-hand or unnecessary items were collected in each class before the Charity Sales. When it came to selling goods, a long line of desks were put up in the playground with a wide range of goods waiting for their potential customers. But what amazed me most is that fresh food such as sandwiches, juice were made by students on the spot. If you were here, you would be impressed by the yelling sellers, the bargaining buyer, and the happy money-collectors.
The activity is welcomed by all. For one thing, our social skills get improved and practiced. For another, offering help for others made us happy.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

M: I’ll attend a lecture on Wednesday. Let’s discuss this further at the Friday meeting.
W: Unfortunately, I’ll be leaving for London Thursday afternoon. Maybe we can talk that morning over breakfast.
M: Sounds great.
(Text 2)
M: Honey, what do you think of this kind of wooden chair for our restaurant?
W: It looks great, but it’s kind of small. Just like the chairs in my company. How
about this green one here?
(Text 3)
M: You look upset. What’s wrong?
W: I’ll never take my car downtown again.
M: Did you get another ticket or couldn’t you find a parking space?
W: I wish it were just that. My car was broken into. I lost my purse.
(Text 4)
W: Excuse me. I’m afraid I get lost. Could you tell me where I can take a bus or a train to Holiday Inn?
M: I think you’d better take a taxi in case you get lost again.
(Text 5)
M: I find that you didn’t turn in your homework today.
W: I’m sorry.
M: Is everything OK? We’ve been in school for four months now, and this is the first time you haven’t done your homework.
W: I’ve been a little stressed by my grandma’s death.
(Text 6)
W: Hi, Paul. You look unhappy.
M: My computer went wrong this morning and I have to get a paper finished for class on Monday.
W: You can always go to the library.
M: ⑥The library isn’t open on Saturday afternoons and Sundays and I have to take care of my baby sister this morning.
W: That’s a problem. My family is having friends over this afternoon so it won’t be possible for you to come to my place. ⑦I can lend you my computer.
M: ⑦Wow, Sally, that’s great.
(Text 7)
M: Hi, Judy. Did you see this notice in the dining hall?
W: Yeah, Sam. I don’t like it. ⑧I usually sit here and talk with my friends after lunch until my first class at 2 in the afternoon. Now we have to find someplace
else to go.
M: But we have lots of other places to go. We can go to the school park.
W: That means carrying all my books.
M: ⑨But they explain this will help keep the cost of food down, and we can save some extra money.
(Text 8)
W: Hi, Jeff. How was your weekend?
M: It was great. Mary, how was yours?
W: My mother’s birthday was Saturday and we had a great time. ⑩We had dinner at home and then watched an old movie. When they told me it was almost seventy years old, I thought it was going to be boring, but it was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. I laughed, I cried, I got angry.
M: Wow! Now I want to see it.
W: I’m dying to watch it again. Hey, why don’t we get together and have a party and we can see the movie together?
M: That’s a great idea. I can bring some friends, if that’s OK.
W: Sure. I’ll ask my mum to watch it with us. She can tell us all about the stars. Let’s say 6 o’clock on Saturday.
(Text 9)
M: OK. I got my vacation early this year so as soon as school’s out, the first of June, we have two weeks to have fun. We’ve talked about this before and have chosen two possibilities: a trip across Canada or explore Florida. Which will it be?
W: I’d like to go to Florida. I’ve always wanted to visit Orlando.
M: We should get on the Internet and check flight schedules as soon as possible. I remember a ticket costs $500. They may still have that promotion where a second person flies for half price. That means the four of us can go for the cost of three.
W: Orlando, here we come! But we won’t spend the whole two weeks there, will we? I heard St Augustine was cool. And there’s Daytona Beach where you can drive on the beach.
M: Your mother and I will take care of the driving and make hotel reservations so
you and Tim will plan the sightseeing. Is that a deal?
W: Yeah! Great!
M: Only one rule. Each person gets to take one suitcase.
W: But I have a lot of clothes I want to take.
M: I’ll help you pack.
(Text 10)
W: Planning a schedule that includes time for studies, sports, part-time work and free time can be a challenge. Today we have Dr Tony with us to talk about how to plan a schedule.
M: Well, the good way to start is to make a plan for each day of the week and then try to balance your time so you can include everything. Here are some guidelines that may help you.
First, we start with the twenty-four hours we all have in every day. If we take out eight hours for our sleep time, that leaves sixteen hours to divide among the other activities. Attendance at school takes about six hours and homework about two, for a total of eight. That leaves us eight hours for sports, work and free time. Remember, those guidelines are flexible and you must adjust them to your particular needs.
Weekends are different since we don’t have to attend school. Here we can usually focus on certain activities such as sports or part-time work and free time. We can see our friends and spend more time with our family.
If you make a schedule and try to keep to it, you will soon develop the habit of doing each task during its planned time and will be satisfied that you can comfortably do everything you have to do.
