Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none一that's because all of Jim's art is created on an unusual canvas (画布)一the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.
Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.
Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven't changed—All he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙) and most importantly, his lively imagination!
Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, in search of perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world's largest freelance drawing(自由绘画), was created in the desert sands of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away.
Jim's art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named “Sandman” in 2005. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand一he is also an excellent chef (厨师) and founder of an organization called “Outstanding in the Field", whose motto is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced.
24. It can be learnt from the text that_________.
A. Denevan walks a lot to complete his work
B. it is not hard for Denevan to find suitable sand to draw on
C. it usually takes long for the storm to destroy Denevan's work
D. Denevan is very particular about his drawing tools
25. What does Denevan enjoy about his work according to the text?
A. Walking a long distance. B. Waiting for the storm to come.
C. Looking for a suitable canvas. D.Watching his work being destroyed by nature.
26. Which of the following can best describe Denevan?
A. Generous. B. Open-minded. C. Imaginative. D. Traditional.
27. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Denevan loses his interest in art soon. B. Denevan is also popular as a chef.
C. Being a happy chef is Denevan's final goal in life.
D. Denevan's fame helps him with his chef job.

I’m a fisherman. No wait, a fisherwoman, yes that’s the correct term I believe. But not much of one, if I can be honest. I do my best though. During lunch, I like to sit on the boat dock, and, you guessed it, fish. I don’t eat fish, just for fun, and when I do catch one, I just look at them a minute or two, swell up with pride, and throw them back in.
Surely that was a big day for me. When I snatched up my fishing pole, and started reeling(收线) the line in, my heart was filled with expectation. I had a vision come to mind, taking that big fish up to the house in a big bucket of water, and show off in front of my boy.
That big fish had gotten himself snagged(勾住) in the weeds on the opposite bank, and I could tell he was a big one, probably my biggest catch ever. I felt him pull, and twist, but no matter how I tried, I couldn’t get him reeled in.
Not wanting to hurt the big one, I paddled(划桨) to the opposite bank of the river, while reeling my line in, and came up alongside the weeds he was snagged under. I could feel him pulling on my line. He was big and strong. I just hoped he wasn’t too big to get into my boat. I was going to show my fisherman son a thing or two today, I just knew it. My heart beat with excitement, maybe I could get the boy to take a picture of me with my catch of the day. If it’s big enough, maybe I’ll even make the paper.
I finally worked the line free of the weeds, and pulled the big boy up from the water to come meet his momma. My blood ran cold at the horror which came up out of that water instead. The biggest, meanest, ugliest snake I’d ever seen in my life come out of that water, with my fishhook in his mouth, opening wide up.
I screamed bloody murder, let go of that line, fell back into the seat of the boat and paddled backward as if my life depended on it. I might have paddled all the way to the Gulf of Mexico if I’d had enough river to get away from that scaled man-eater.
I don’t remember how fast I got out of that boat, but it was real fast. My hands shaking, I called my boy to come down and help me out. I’d finally caught a big one.

Recently, we’ve been talking about how we need better teachers. There’s no doubt that a great teacher can help in a student’s learning but here’s what some new studies are also showing: We need better parents.
Every three years, the organization called O.E.C.D. organizes exams as part of the Program for International Student Assessment(评估), or PISA, which tests 15-year-olds on their abilities to deal with real problems. America’s 15-year-olds have not done as well as students in Singapore,
Finland and Shanghai in the PISA exams.
To better understand the reasons, the PISA team, starting with four countries in 2006, and then adding 14 more in 2009, went to the parents of 5,000 students. They interviewed them about how they raised their kids and then compared it with the test results for each of those years. Two weeks ago, the PISA team published the main finding of its study.
Fifteen-year-olds whose parents often read books with them during their first year of primary school(小学) get much higher scores in PISA 2009 than students whose parents don’t often read with them or not at all. Parents’ concern for their children is strongly connected with better results in PISA.
According to Schleicher, the leader of the team, just asking your children how their school day was and showing great interest in their learning can help a lot. It is something every parent can do, no matter what their education level is.
The study found that getting parents concerned about(关心) their children’s learning at home is more powerful than parents attending parent-teacher meetings, volunteering in classrooms, taking part in money-raising, and showing up at back-to-school nights.
To be sure, nothing can replace a good teacher. But let’s stop putting the whole duty on teachers. We also need better parents. Better parents can make teaching more beneficial(有利的).
32.What can we learn about the organization O.E.C.D?
A. It tests teenagers’ learning skills. B. It calls for better teachers.
C. It organizes PISA exams every 3 years. D. It compares parents from different countries.
33. Why does the PISA team interview some parents?
A. To understand students better. B. To get along well with parents.
C. To help students with bad test results. D. To find out why students have different test results.
34. According to the study, parents are advised to __________.
A. try to search for better teachers B. put the whole duty on teachers
C. care about their children’s school life D. ask their children to read more books
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Better Parents Are Needed B. Better Teachers Are Appreciated
C. A Study by the PISA Team D. An Interview with Parents

书面表达
Dear Ann,
I am delighted to have received your letter. In your last letter you mentioned that you had some problems in making and maintaining new friends in a new class.
From where I am standing, I suggest that one important thing to remember when trying to get along with others is to listen. When someone is talking to you, look at them. Above all, don’t interrupt them. Another thing I want to remind you is that you should compromise, when you don’t agree with each other, one or both of you should agree to give up something to find a solution .Last but not least you should keep in mind that it takes time and energy to build new and good relationship. You cannot expect to become friends with someone if you don’t spend time with them.
I sincerely hope that what I have suggested can be helpful for you. I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
