‎ Module 3 Foreign Food Ⅰ.阅读理解 A ‎[2020·合肥市高三调研性检测]‎ Check off the four corners Arizona‎, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico are not simply the only four American states that meet at a single point, but they also host the US's greatest concentration of national parks.‎ This is the place to come for that classic scene of the lonely desert road extending to the horizon. On your way, take in such sights as the Monument Valley and the mysterious remains of centuriesold civilizations in Colorado's Mesa Verde.‎ Find beauty in the desert With many miles of excellent roads, a selfdrive trip in Namibia makes total sense. Plan a route north from capital Windhoek to wildliferich Etosha National Park, before crossing Damaraland to reach the Skeleton‎ ‎Coast. The most impressive desert views are in the NamibNaukluft National Park to the south. At Sossusvlei, the landscape takes on the quality of a surrealist painting.‎ Cross half a continent The 1,761milelong Stuart Highway runs north to south through Australia's Red Centre. It is not a road where every turn shows new wonders; the reward of this trip comes in the gradual change in your surroundings, from red soils in Australia's outback to the tropical(热带的) leaves of the Indian Ocean coast.‎ Take the high road Among all the crashing of continental plates that raised up the Canadian Rockies, a 144mile route was left more or less clear at their centre. The Ice fields Parkway now passes through this amazing scenery; with the access it brings to icy lakes, waterfalls and ice fields, the section between Banff and Jasper has a good claim to being the most scenic in the world.‎ ‎1.Where can you experience ancient civilizations?‎ A.In Australia's Red Centre.‎ B.In the Canadian Rockies.‎ C.In Colorado's Mesa Verde.‎ - 8 -‎ D.In the Namib-Naukluft National Park.‎ ‎2.What can you do on a selfdrive trip in Namibia?‎ A.Explore the Monument‎ ‎Valley.‎ B.Enjoy the striking desert views.‎ C.Save some endangered wildlife.‎ D.Go through the largest national park.‎ ‎3.What can you infer about the trips mentioned in the text?‎ A.They provide the amazing road adventures.‎ B.They offer new wonders across the world.‎ C.They are for those who love various national parks.‎ D.They are intended to raise environmental awareness.‎ B ‎[2020·成都市高中毕业班摸底测试]That summer I turned 16, my father gave me a car, which permitted Hannah and me to drive around Tucson whenever we wanted to.‎ Hannah was my best friend. “Hannah's amazing,” my mother always said. And sure enough, that summer she signed with a modeling agency. She was already doing runway work.‎ One day, Hannah and I went to the movies. On the way home, we stopped at the McDonald's drivethrough, putting the fries on the seat between us to share. “Let's drive around for a while,” I said. It was a clear night and moonlight shone over the desert. Taking a turn too fast, I hit a patch of dirt and fishtailed(摆尾行驶)。‎ The fries were on the floor. An amount of blood was on Hannah's face. We were taken into separate ambulances. In the ER, my parents spoke quietly: The best plastic surgeon in the city. The end of her modeling career.‎ We'd been wearing lap belts, but the car didn't have shoulder harnesses. I'd cracked my cheekbone; Hannah's forehead had split wide open. What would I say to her?‎ When her mother, Sharon, came into my hospital room, I started to cry, bracing myself for her anger. She sat beside me and took my hand. “I almost ended my best friend when I was your age,” she said. “I totaled her car and mine.”‎ ‎“I'm so sorry,” I said.‎ ‎“You're both alive,” she said. “The rest is window dressing.” I started to protest, and Sharon stopped me. “I forgive you. Hannah will too.”‎ Sharon‎'s forgiveness allowed Hannah and me to stay friends throughout life. I - 8 -‎ ‎ think of her gift of forgiveness every time I want to resent someone for a perceived wrong. And whenever I see Hannah, the scars are a symbol of grace for me.‎ ‎4.What caused the car accident?‎ A.Poor visibility. B.Driving too fast.‎ C.Hitting a patch of dirt. Yet his team's experiments and computer models show that a chimpanzee's muscle is only about a third stronger than a human of the same size.‎ This result matches well with the few tests that have been done, which suggest that when it comes to pulling and jumping, chimps are about 1.5 times as strong as humans owing to their muscular bodies. “But because people participating in these tests are lighter than the average person, humans can actually outperform chimpanzees in absolute terms,” says O'Neill.‎ His findings suggest that other apes have similar muscle strength to chinpanzees, “Human are the odd ones,” he says.‎ O'Neill's team has been studying the evolution of upright walking. To create an accurate computer model of how chimps walk, the researchers needed to find out - 8 -‎ ‎ whether their muscles really are much stronger. So they removed small samples of leg muscle from three chimps and measured the strength of individual fibers(纤维)。‎ The same procedure was used to study human muscles. Comparing the results with the many studies on those showed that contrary to the claims of several other studies, there is nothing special about chimp muscle. “Chimpanzee's muscle is really no different than human muscle in terms of the force that individual fibers use,” says O'Neill.‎ So why, on a poundforpound basis, are chimps slightly stronger than humans? The team went on to look at the muscle of chimps that had died of natural causes, which showed that twothirds of their muscle is made of fast twitch fibers, whereas more than half of human fibers are slow twitch. Fast twitch fibers are more powerful, but use more energy and become tired faster.‎ Another factor, O'Neill found, is that chimps have longer fibers on average, which also improves their strength.‎ This adds to the evidence that walking uses far more energy for chimps than for people. The results fit well with the idea that early humans evolved to walk or run long distances. It seems that we gave up some strength for greater endurance (耐力).‎ ‎8.What does O'Neill mean by saying “Humans are the odd ones”?‎ A.Humans are better at jumping and pulling things than chimps.‎ B.Humans'muscle strength is different from that of apes.‎ C.Humans are heavier and stronger than chimpanzees.‎ D.There is nothing special about human muscles.‎ ‎9.What contributes a lot to the strength of chimp muscles?‎ A.The evolution of upright walking.‎ B.The slowtwitch fibers in their muscles.‎ C.Most of their muscles being made of short fibers.‎ D.The fasttwitch fibers in their muscles.‎ ‎10.What can we infer from the text?‎ A.Short twitch fibers provide more energy for the muscle.‎ B.Early humans needed much more energy than chimps.‎ C.Human muscles are more suited to long distance running.‎ D.Slow twitch fibers help chimps survive in the wild.‎ ‎11.What can we conclude from the passage?‎ A.Chimpanzees have much stronger muscles than humans.‎ - 8 -‎ B.Chimpanzees are lighter than humans.‎ C.Chimp muscle is almost the same as humans'.‎ D.Humans can't walk as long as chimpanzees.‎ Ⅱ.阅读七选五 ‎[2020·河南省高考适应性测试]‎ Pay More, and You Will Get Unexpected Results Give what you can.‎ You clean out your closets(壁橱), right? Maybe you have a few shirts you don't wear anymore or a few children's books you can bear to part with. The thing about giving a little is that when everyone gives a little, suddenly it turns into a lot. __1__‎ ‎__2__‎ In a world where smartphones rule, it's not just possible, but normal, to have entire conversations without ever looking someone in the eye. It can be heartstopping and wonderful to make eye contact with someone smiling. Happiness will spread, and it only takes a couple of facial muscles to make it.‎ Use “please” and “thank you”.‎ Not to sound like your grandmother (“Go ahead and clean your hands!”), but the smallest ways to show your gratitude are these little words. __3__ Aren't you thankful if someone held the door for you when your hands were full? Tell them!‎ Give when you get.‎ This is not a difficult task. __4__ There are so many ways to pull this off: You can make it yourself(donating an older shirt when you have a new one, etc.), or support companies that are warmhearted dogooders. Just do it!‎ ‎__5__‎ Maybe a grandparent is hearing about your adventures or your old friend had a really bad day. Maybe your mom wishes you'd ring her up more often. Get on the line. You remember that your phone can make calls, right? Get in touch with those people that are dying to hear from you (because someone definitely is ). Then ask: How are you doing? What's new? These questions seem simple, but what they mean is endless.‎ A.Be a part of that lot.‎ B.Smile with eye contact.‎ C.Get in touch. Then listen.‎ D.Whenever you get a little, give a little.‎ - 8 -‎ E.You can say it out loud. Don't be afraid.‎ F.They take zero effort to say, but the influence is huge.‎ G.When someone has helped you, do something in return.‎ 课后提能练(四十五)‎ Ⅰ. (outback n. Check off the four corners部分尾句“On your way, take in such sights as the Monument Valley and the mysterious remains of centuriesold civilizations in Colorado's Mesa Verde”可知,在科罗拉多州的梅萨维德国家公园可以体验古老的文明。 Find beauty in the desert部分的“The most impressive desert views are in the NamibNaukluft National Park to the south”可知,在纳米比亚自驾游可以欣赏到令人印象深刻的沙漠景观,故B项正确。 (harness n. 根据第三段的最后一句“Taking a turn too fast, I hit a patch of dirt and fishtailed(摆尾行驶)”可知,由于“我”转弯太快,撞上一个土堆,汽车摆尾行驶,导致事故发生。故选B。‎ 干扰项分析:C项“Hitting a patch of dirt”的干扰性比较大。 根据第二段中的“that summer she signed with a modeling agency. She was already doing runway work”和第四段中的“The end of her modeling career”可知,因为那次事故Hannah不能再继续她的模特生涯,故C项正确。 (outperform vt. The team went on to look at the muscle of chimps that had died of natural causes, which showed that twothirds of their muscle is made of fast twitch fibers, whereas more than half of human fibers are slow twitch.‎ 句式分析:本句是一个主从复合句,主句为The team went on to look at the muscle of chimps; that had died of natural causes为that引导的定语从句,修饰chimps; which引导的非限制性定语从句修饰前面半句话,在该非限制性定语从句中,that引导的从句作show的宾语。 ‎ ‎1.A 根据设空处前一句“The thing about giving a little is that when everyone gives a little, suddenly it turns into a lot.” ‎ ‎2.B 根据下文中的“It can he heartstopping and wonderful to make eye contact with someone smiling.” ‎ ‎3.F 根据本段的标题“Use ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.” ‎ ‎4.D 根据本段标题“Give when you get.” ‎ ‎5.C 根据该段的内容,尤其是第三至五句“Get on the line. You remember that your phone can make calls, right? Get in touch with those people that are dying to hear from you (because someone definitely is).” Then listen.” ‎ - 8 -‎
