But when members of an after-school program in New Hampshire heard the story “The Boy and the Starfish,” the Starfish Club was born! The story goes like this:‎ A man sees a boy throwing starfish that have washed up on the beach back into the ocean. He tells the boy that he’s wasting his time, “You can’t possibly save them all –— you can’t make a difference.” As the boy returns another starfish to the sea, he says to the man, “Maybe —— but I made a huge difference for that one!”‎ The Starfish Club members enjoy making a difference for animals. They do a lot to help animals in their local shelter. But when they learned that a boy in Massachusetts worked to get a law passed banning the sale of shark fins (鳍) in his state, they decided to try to get a similar law passed in New Hampshire.‎ The kids learned a lot about shark finning, a practice of cutting off the fins of sharks and then throwing the sharks back into the ocean to die. The fins are sold and used to make shark fin soup. Each year, tens of millions of sharks are killed for their fins.‎ Club members made posters, and wrote letters to raise awareness about the problem. When a bill to ban the shark fin trade was proposed(提议) in their state, four members traveled to the state capitol to testify(作证) for passage of the bill. But in the end, the bill wasn’t passed into law —— at least not this time.‎ ‎“I feel proud of myself and the Starfish Club for working very hard,” adds Payton Paradis, age 10. “I am sad that the law didn’t pass, but I hope we encouraged many kids around the world to keep trying, no matter what the problem is. And remember —— fins belong on sharks, not in soup!”‎ 3. The Starfish Club got its name from____.‎ A. a boy B. a story C. a starfish D. a program 4. What’s the purpose of the Starfish Club?‎ A. They come in a huge variety of shapes. They can move around and communicate with each other. They are so tiny that the only way to see them is with a microscope(显微镜). Bacteria, fungi(真菌), and viruses are examples of microbes.‎ ‎“Microbes can be found everywhere in our bodies and all over Earth,” Marie Samanovic-Golden said. She is a scientist who studies microbes. “Understanding them is necessary for understanding our body.”‎ Scientists have known for years that some microbes cause diseases. Recently, by using new advances in technology, scientists have collected more information about microbes. They have learned that many microbes play a major role in fighting diseases.‎ ‎“We know that microbes are important for our immune(免疫的) system,” says Susan Perkins, a scientist at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), in New York City. She is an organizer of The Secret World Inside You, a new show on microbes. At the AMNH show, visitors can use videos and a live theater presentation to explore how microbes influence health. The show runs until August 14, 2016. ‎ According to Perkins, what we eat affects what kinds of microbes we have inside of us, and it is important to have many kinds of microbes. Microbes in the digestive tract (消化道) help digest food. In the mouth, they protect teeth from cavities(蛀牙). Microbes also make vitamins.‎ ‎“We are learning so much about microbes all the times,” Perkins said. “We have far more helpful microbes than harmful ones,” she says.‎ 1. What can we learn about the new study on microbes?‎ A. Scientists have found their positive role.‎ B. Scientists have collected new microbes.‎ C. Scientists have used them to cure diseases.‎ D. Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, so the day after is a Friday. This day has come to be known as Black Friday. It has been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005.‎ Most stores offer great deals on Black Friday. They open their doors very early in the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts(折扣). Some products like TVs are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these products. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.‎ Black Friday is a great time to get good deals. The problem is that there are not enough ‎ low-priced products to go around. Each store may only have a few. People stand in long lines to get such great deals, but not everyone who wants one will get one. Some people look crestfallen as they leave.‎ Some Black Friday events have been violent. Large crowds have trampled(踩踏) workers. Fights have broken out over toys or people cutting in line. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan on going, expect large crowds.‎ The name “Black Friday” was first used in Philadelphia in 1950s. Police officers called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it drew. In the 1960s, stores tried to rename the day” Big Friday.” It did not stick. The name “Black Friday” continued to be used across the country. It seems that it is here to stay.‎ Now people all over the country take part in Black Friday. It is even spreading to other parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the U.K.‎, Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Costa Rica Black Friday is known as “Viernes Negro.”‎ 1. Why do some stores sell TVs at low prices?‎ A. They are short of money.‎ B. They want to sell out old products.‎ C. They want people to buy other things.‎ D. They want people to enjoy their shopping.‎ 2. What does the underlined word “crestfallen” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?‎ A. Disappointed. B. Confused. C. Surprised. D. Excited.‎ 3. How did the first Black Friday get its name?‎ A. It led to violent events. B. It caused a lot of traffic.‎ B. It attracted large crowds. D. It wasted too much money.‎ 4. What does the last paragraph say about Black Friday?‎ A. It has been celebrated as an old tradition.‎ B. It is a national holiday of the United States.‎ C. It has become an international shopping holiday.‎ D. It is called “Viernes Negro” in the English world.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ In defence of free health care Health care is regarded as an important way to improve the health and well-being of people around the world. In many countries of the world, free health care is provided by the government. 16 Clearly, we all have to pay for this service through our taxes(税收).‎ ‎17 They say that people who take unnecessary risks should not receive this free health care. Foe example, people who join in risky activities such as skiing are more likely to have an accident. It has been suggested that these people should pay for any medical treatment they require.‎ ‎18 Firstly, it’s difficult to say exactly what is risky and what is not. For example, not doing enough exercise is probably more risky than skiing in the long term. As a result, it isn’t fair to give free health care to an inactive person and make the skier pay. 19 Clearly, these people should receive free medical treatment if they are hurt on the job.‎ Finally, I would like to say that I think free health care is a good thing. I understand that the system is not perfectly fair because some people use it more than others. Besides, not all the medical ‎ treatment is really necessary for the health of the patient. The taxpayer should not have to pay the costs of such treatment. 20‎ A. It helps you make money.‎ B. Personally, I disagree with this point of view.‎ C. However, some people think this is basically unjust.‎ D. This means that everybody has a chance to see a doctor.‎ E. Free health care will decrease the economy of the country.‎ F. Besides, fire fighters take risks, but they are necessary risks.‎ G. However, in my opinion, this is a small price to pay for a healthier society.‎ 第二部分  语言知识运用 (共两节,满分55分)‎ 第一节 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ Krystal was ten when her parents divorced(离婚).
