Do you know any 9-year-olds who have started their own museums? When Theodore Roosevelt was only nine, he and two of his cousins opened the “Roosevelt Museum of Natural History”. The museum was in Theodore’s bedroom. It had a total of 12 specimens(标本).On display were a few seashells, some dead insects and some birds’ nests. Young Roosevelt took great pride in his small museum.
Born in New York in 1858,Theodore Roosevelt was not always healthy. “I was a sickly, delicate boy.” he once wrote. Roosevelt had a health condition called asthma(哮喘).“He often found it hard to breathe. Instead of playing, he observed nature and then read and wrote about it.”
Roosevelt’s interest in nature sometimes got him into trouble. Once, his mother found several dead mice in the icebox. She ordered him to throw them out. This was indeed“a loss to science”,Roosevelt said later.
Because Roosevelt was often sickly as a boy, his body was small and weak. When he was about 12,his father advised him to improve his body. Roosevelt began working out in a gym. He didn’t become strong quickly. But he did decide to face life’s challenges with a strong spirit. That determination stayed with Roosevelt his whole life. And finally his body did get strong. As an adult, he was an active, healthy person. He enjoyed adventures and loved outdoors.
In 1900, at the age of 41,Roosevelt was elected(选举) Vice President. A year later, former President McKinley, was shot and killed. Roosevelt became the 26th President of the USA. At 42,he was the youngest leader the country had ever had.
21.Which of the following tells about Roosevelt as a boy?
A. He liked playing outdoor sports.
B. He became the President in 1901.
C. He was a healthy person full of energy.
D. He showed interest in observing nature.
22.What can we infer from the passage?
A. Roosevelt’s mother liked mice.
B. Roosevelt followed his father’s advice.
C. Everyone with asthma is small and weak.
D. Working out in a gym is a waste of time.
23.In which book might you find this passage?
A. Improving Your Body
B. Living with Asthma
C. Small Museums of Natural History
D. The Childhoods of America’s presidents
B
Cassandra Feeley finds it hard to manage on her husband’s income. So this year she did something more than a hobby: She planted vegetables in her yard. For her first garden, Ms.Feeley has put in 40 tomato plants, and five rows of a variety of vegetables. The family’s old farm house has become a chicken house, its residents arriving next month. Last year,Ms. Rita Gartin kept a small garden. This year she has made it much larger because, she said, “The cost of everything is going up and I was looking to lose a few pounds, too; so it’s a win-win situation all around.”
They are among the growing number of Americans who, driven by higher living costs and a falling economy, have taken up vegetable gardening for the first time. Others have increased the size of their existing gardens. Seed companies and garden shops say that not since the 1970s has there been such an increase in interest in growing
food at home. Now many gardens across the country have been sold out for several months. In Austin, Tex.,some of the gardens have a three-year waiting list.
George C. Ball Jr., owner of a company, said sales of vegetable seeds and plants are up by 40% over last year, double the average growth of the last five years. Mr. Ball argues that some of the reasons have been building for the last few years. The big one is the striking rise in the cost of food like bread and milk, together with the increases in the price of fruits and vegetables. Food prices have increased because of higher oil prices. People are now driving less, taking fewer vacations, so there is more time to garden.
24. What does the underlined word “residents” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A. chickens B. tomatoes C. gardens D. people
25. Why is vegetable gardening becoming increasingly popular?
A. There’s a growing need for fruits.
B. The price of oil is lower than before.
C. The cost of living is generally on the rise.
D. More Americans are trying new things for fun.
26. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A. Family Food Planning B. Depending on Gardening
C. A Belt-tightening Move D. Gardening as a Hobby
C
Aspirin has long been praised as a wonder drug. An aspirin a day keeps the doctor away. Many Americans have been taking one aspirin a day, believing it would protect them from a heart attack, a stroke(中风), and even a cancer. But several recent studies have thrown this into question. Daily use of aspirin can have serious side effects.
One study followed more than 19,000 healthy people aged 65 and older. They were required to take either 100 mg of aspirin (a little more than the 81 mg dose that most people take) or a placebo(无效对照剂) every day for about 3 years. Not only did people in the aspirin group not lower their risk of heart disease or disability but they were also more likely to suffer from bleeding into the brain or stomach. And they were more likely to die because of an increased risk of giving in to cancer.
Similarly, an experiment of more than 12,500 people aged 55 and older who have a cardiovascular(心血管的)risk found no benefit to take aspirin daily. In a study of more than 15,000 people with diabetes(糖尿病), a daily aspirin did prevent heart attacks and strokes, but it also caused serious bleeding.
Although some earlier research has proved that aspirin can help people who have already had or are at high risk for heart attacks or strokes, the drug's value is not so clear for people, especially older people.
The bottom line is this: Be smart and be safe. You should not take daily low-dose aspirin without talking to a doctor if you:
● Are over the age of 70
● Drink wine regularly
●Are on any simple medical operations
27. Why do many Americans take one aspirin a day?
A. It has no side effects at all.
B. It makes people free from diabetes.
C. It's believed to prevent serious diseases.
D. It's proved to be a wonder drug.
28. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The elderly having a cardiovascular risk.
B. The reasons for bleeding and diabetes.
C. The side effects from taking aspirin.
D. The effort people make to prevent diseases.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A People drinking wine frequently should take aspirin.
B. Aspirin helps healthy people lower risk of heart disease.
C. Most people have a good understanding of aspirin's value.
D. Taking aspirin daily might cause health problems for healthy people.
30. What does the author think of taking aspirin daily?
A. People should be careful about the medicine.
B. This treatment is very helpful and simple.
C. Old people should start this kind of treatment.
D. It could be used to treat heart attack and stroke.

A dog's mind is only similar to that of a two-year-old baby. 31 So they are likely to notice any change in the behavior of their owners. Let's do some further explanation to understand the amazing ability of a dog.
Dogs sense your feelings. Isn't it strange? 32 This is true. A study published in the Animal Cognition journal says that dogs are known to come to people who look in a bad mood. It doesn't matter if the person is their owner or a stranger. They have an ability to sense sadness and are attracted to troubled souls.
33 They can easily tell when you're playing with favorites, and if you play more with other pets, your dog might notice it and feel uncomfortable. Though they can't say how they feel, they will scratch, yawn or lick their mouths.
Dogs smell fear. Let's say you are faced with your worst fear. Would you get scared and run away or just face it? Before choosing how to deal with it, you should remember one thing. 34 Research shows that dogs often sense their owner's reaction in dangerous situations. If you fear something and choose to back away, chances are that your pet is going to do the same thing.
Dogs are watching you. We are all raised as responsible individuals(个人) who are taught to respect elders, obey the law and help out people in need from time to time. 35 But if you have a dog at home, it is time to be serious about them. Dogs like generous people. So just be careful around your pet; it may judge you on how you behave with others.
A. Dogs are able to notice health problems.
B. Dogs know when no one's looking at them.
C. You would be setting an example to your pet.
D. Dogs understand when they are ignored(忽视).
E. Every time you feel sad, your dog just knows it.
F. But dogs are able to sense everything around them.
G. However, not all of us pay much attention to these three things.

第二节 概要写作(满分20分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
You might think that whether you choose a blue shirt or a yellow one to wear to work or college makes no difference to your day and those around you. However, an increasing number of experts argue that the colors we choose affect our mood, our job expectations and even our health.
The power of color has been used for centuries and we should be making the most of it in our lives. Color affects us to a greater degree than most of us realize. It is used increasingly by psychologists and therapists for influencing mood and state
of mind, and for various types of treatments when we are ill. Some people even believe that the blind can benefit from the “vibrations (震动)” that color gives off.
Companies use color to encourage us to buy their products. For example, purple is seen as creative and mixes well with red, to show that a company has ideas and the power to make them happen. Orange and blue are also recommended colors for companies to use, because orange is the color of communication and blue suggests safety and security. So this could be a good combination. Companies have found certain colors “speak” to specific(特定的)age groups. They often use red to attract younger people to their products, for example, as it is vibrant and more youthful than colors like gold and navy, which older customers seem to prefer.
Wearing different colors can affect how you feel and how others react to you, so it is important to consider this when deciding what to wear in the morning. If you want people to take you seriously, then wearing navy blue or black is good. Blue would also be helpful for an interview or oral examination because it relaxes you and makes you feel calm. Red gets you noticed by everyone and makes you, the wearer, feel energetic, but be careful, as it can raise your pulse rate and not everyone wants this effect.
So think carefully before you leave the house. The colors you choose are a wonderful tool. Are you making the right impression—on yourself and on others?

Dear Ms. Li,
I am happy to have you as our English teacher.
As the world is becoming a global village, English is getting more and more important, so mastering English means we can see the world through a new window.
My English is just OK and the two main problems in my study are that I feel it difficult to learn words by heart, and that I often feel nervous when speaking English. I really hope that you can give me good advice on how to memorize new words. Another suggestion is to give us more chances to practice speaking. I believe we can make much progress in English with your help.
Thank you!
Yours,
Li Hua
