On her first day tutoring students from low-income families at an after-school program in New York City, Alysa Kapasi noticed how many kids were lining up for free sandwiches and fruit in the cafeteria. Many of these students do not get enough to eat at home, so a school lunch or an afterschool meal might be the most food they would get all day.
Kapasi, who attends private school, was shocked. She was determined to help "I want other kids to understand that if you see a problem, you don’t have to wait to be an adult to fix it,” says Kapasi. She and a group of friends are now putting their programming skills to work to create a mobile app called Food For Thought.
Through the application, parents will be able to pay for their own children's meal and will be presented with an option to donate 2-3 dollars to pay for a meal of another student. Other donors will also be able to donate money to help children get lunch in their community.
One creative characteristic of the app is that the receivers of the contributions will be anonymous. To receive financial help, a family will need only a recommendation from a school administrator and no one else has to know. “I want to make my platform an application that all users feel no shame in using,” says Kapasi.
“It astonished us that in one of the wealthiest and most advanced countries in the world there are still communities that are going hungry. By giving parents an easy option, we encourage their giving and raise their awareness that there are students in their children's school who are in need,” Kapasi says. She hopes to have the app ready to be used in New York City-based schools during the new school year.
24. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1?
A. Explain how shocked Kapasi was.
B. Evaluate Kapasi’s experience as a volunteer.
C. Tell how the idea for the app came to Kapasi.
D. Describe how the after-school program went on.
25. What can the app be used to do?
A. Teach students to be independent.
B. Improve students’ programming skills.
C. Buy school lunches for children in need.
D. Allow parents to keep in touch with their children.
26. Which of the following best explains “anonymous” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A. Inspired.
B. Selective.
C. Certain.
D. Unnamed.
27. What is Kapasi's future plan?
A. To use the app in some schools.
B. To encourage students to donate.
C. To get more parents to visit schools.
D. To make parents aware of world hunger.

In early January this year, the Alibaba’s Artificial Intelligence (Al) software machine based on a deep neural network model scored 82.44 on a reading comprehension test while humans scored 82.304, In other areas, computers and Al have already bested humans, or example in games such as chess. However, anyone reading translations of Arabic or from other languages into English on Twitter or elsewhere, will no doubt agree often a knowledgeable human translator would be much superior as machines find languages hard to master.
There is no doubt that the new software will be used in some work now occupied by humans by bots (机器人) with fixed Al. For example, the quantities of call-center employees, often in developing countries, may be out of work soon — assuming the AI bots are cheaper and as effective as human labor.
Si Luo, who is a chief scientist of natural language processing at Alibaba’s research noted that questions such as “What causes rain?” can now be answered with a high degree of accuracy by bots. Lao said, “We believe the fundamental technology can be gradually applied to various applications, freeing human efforts.”
Si Luo's team is working closely with Ali Xiaomi — a mobile customer service chatbot. Ali Xiaomi can be customized (定做) to be used on Alibaba's platforms such as Taobao and Tmall. When answering consumer questions, the new Al bots would look for relevant answers from prepared documents. Soon when you phone a company for information the conversation will go like this, “We are sorry but all our bots are busy right now. We value your call. Please stay on the line until a bot free to serve you. There are just 12 callers ahead of you.” A bot will serve you random popular tunes while you wait. But if questions do not have clear cut answers, or the questions asked are not clearly expressed or ungrammatical the bot may not be able to deal with them.
28. What can we know from the first paragraph?
A. Translating skills can be gained through knowledge.
B. Some researches are carried out on computers and Al.
C. People are born with a gift for communicating with others.
D. Alibaba’s AI software machine helps improve reading abilities.
29. What is the future of the new software?
A. It will replace some customer service jobs.
B. It will strengthen the bridges among people.
C. It will get the unemployment to lower greatly.
D. It will help people to work at home effective.
30. How does Si Luo feel about the fundamental technology?
A. Interested. B. Worried.
C. Cautious. D. Confident.
31. What can we infer about the new AI bots from the last paragraph?
A. There are limits to what the system can do.
B. They can provide more topics for conversations.
C. There are various solutions to the same question.
D. They may calm those who are waiting long down.
D
The tree house is a platform or building constructed around, next to or among the trunk or branches of one or more mature trees. In a more dangerous time in human history, their position above the ground would protect the dweller(居住者) against environmental difficulties and possible fierce animals. As modern construction has improved, the tree houses have become less of a practical dwelling and more of a children’s novelty. But now, these fun shelters are appealing to adults too and many are booking themselves in for a few nights among the treetops
These tree house hotels can be found from Europe to Australia. Best of all, they come in a variety of interesting designs! From the traditional “four walls and a roof” hotel, to the more artistic Nothofagus Hotel in Chilean Patagonia, whose twelve-sided walls make it look like a beehive. The Free Spirit Spheres(球体) village on Vancouver Island in Canada allows guests to stay in one of three yellow spheres, which are suspended from trees. Not only are they as safe as houses, they’re popular!
In Sweden, at the Treehotel, numbers have also risen. “In 2010, we had four rooms and around 1,500 guests a year. Today we have seven rooms and nearly 5, 000 guests,” co-founder Kent Lindvall explains. Each of the rooms there was designed by an architect, who was asked to make use of the light and surroundings. They include
a mirrored cube, a bird’s nest and a UFO.
And how about an office? Microsoft, hoping to give its employees thinking space, has constructed a three-building structure. “Studies show people can work better in nature. They are more productive,” says Mr. Nelson, designer and builder of tree houses.
If you’ve no head for heights, then maybe a tree house getaway isn’t going to be your home away from home. But the sense of adventure, the novelty of the setting and the opportunity to return to nature are attracting an increasing number of tree house-staying adults.
32. How do children feel about the tree houses?
A. They are novel. B. They are practical.
C. They are strongly built. D. They are well decorated.
33. What do we know about the rooms at the Treehotel?
A. They are unique in design.
B. They are the largest in size.
C. They overlook bird’s nests.
D. They appear in traditional style.
34. What has Microsoft done for its employees?
A. It has rented tree house hotels.
B. It has created tree house office buildings.
C. It has trained them to work more productively.
D. It has improved their abilities to survive outdoors.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Advantages of Tree Hotels.
B. The Popularity of Tree Houses.
C. Ways of Building Tree Hotels.
D. The Differences Between Tree Houses.

A possible version:
Dear David,
I am glad to hear that you are going to China for a holiday. Knowing you are interested in “Red Culture” tourism in China, I would like to introduce something about it.
To begin with, Jinzhai County, in the western Anhui Province, is the first recommended location because of its beautiful scenery and rich red cultural resources. This is not only an important source of the Chinese revolution, but also an important source of the people’s army. During the Chinese “Red Culture”, you can visit some museums, where you can understand revolutionary history and be encouraged by their devotion to our country.
Looking forward to your coming and it is certain that you won't regret for the trip.
Yours,
LiHua

M: Great, Mother. We’ve changed a lot since 2002. Look at this photo.
W: Was Peter there?
M: Yes, this is him in a sports jacket.
W: Oh, yes. And does Martin still wear a T-shirt and dirty jeans?
M: Well, he’s a businessman now, so he can’t be dirty. But he was wearing jeans. Look.
W: Oh, yes. And is this person with a long coat Joanna?
M: It looks like her, doesn’t it? But Joanna’s standing next to Amy and wearing a red sweater. The man in the big hat is her husband, James.
W: Oh? Isn’t that Robert?
M: No, see the man in the red T-shirt with the blue trousers? That’s Robert.

M: Well, I just came off the flight from New York airport and we were terribly late.
We took off on time, but there was a very loud noise from one of the doors and we had to land again.
W: I expect one of the doors didn’t shut properly. It sometimes happens.
M: Anyway, even though the pilot did his best to get us here as fast as possible, I’ve missed my next flight. It’s to Rome.
W: I see, sir. Well, calm down and we’ll see what we can do to help you. You said you came from New York?
M: No, I come from Detroit…oh, I see, yes, the flight was from New York, non-stop to London.

W: Hi, Jack, I haven’t seen you for long. What have you been doing these months?
M: I’m a bus driver now, working all sorts of hours every week.
W: Do you? Tell me about it.
M: Well, on Monday I start work at 5:30 a.m. and finish at 1:05 p.m. On Tuesday I work from 5:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
W: You work at different time on Wednesday?
M: Yes. On Wednesday I start work at 7:00 a.m. and finish at 10:45a.m. Then I start again at 3:00 p.m. and finish for the day at 7:30 p.m.
W: What about Thursday?
M: From 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday I work at a bit late time. On Friday I start at 2:40 p.m. and finish at 11:00 p.m. On Saturday I start at 3:00 p.m. and finish at ten past midnight.
W: It’s really a busy schedule.
M: You’re right. But the money is not too bad.

M: The project today is for you to interview one of the college professors. You’ll write an article about the person you talk to. Each group of three students will be given a different person. These are the photos of last year’s end-of-year dinner. The dinner was to honor Professor Wyatt on his retirement. He’s the large man seated at the head of the table. To his left Mrs Lehman, who’s head of the
Mathematics Department. The lady with the blue skirt is Professor Linda Spark. In this picture she has red hair but this year is black. Your groups are placed on the board at the back of the class. With each group is the name of a person you’re given to interview and the times they’re free. Please remember the interview must not take more than thirty minutes. Plan your questions before to save time. This is a class in journalism. You’ll have to practice meeting a closing date. That’s the time when you must have your writing completed and ready to present. You’ll be great. I’m certain. Now go to work!
