Alex knew colors and shapes. He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability he made himself to be known as perhaps the world’s most famous talking bird. But Alex, a parrot, died two weeks ago when he was 34. Irene, a psychologist(心理学家) at Harvard university, studied and worked with the parrot for more than 30 years.
In 1977, Irene, then an excellent student in chemistry at Harvard, bought Alex from a pet store. At that time, scientists were not quite sure whether birds could learn to speak with humans. But using the ways of teaching, Irene helped Alex to count small numbers, and to learn about 150 words, as well as colors and shapes. In the lab, Irene would give Alex small reward, like a grape. Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what Irene was doing to get it. Irene then worked with the bird to help him with pronunciation.
Alex learnt very fast. For example, when he was shown a blue paper circle, he could tell what color the paper was, what shape it was, and after touching it, what it was made of. Like other parrots, he also picked up some words when staying in the lab, like “calm down” or “good morning” . What’s more, he could also show his happiness and sadness. Even before the week he died, Alex was working with Irene on difficult words. As she put him into his cage for the night that Thursday, Irene said that Alex looked at her and said, “You are good. See you tomorrow. I love you. ”He was found dead in his cage the next morning.

When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.” I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?
As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids and the sun hurts their eyes.
The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.
When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like salespeople.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote (推销) long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.
28. Why was the writer upset in the fishing trips when he was nine?
A. He could not catch a fish. B. His father was not patient with him.
C. His father didn’t teach him fishing. D. He could not influence a fish as his father did.
29. What did the writer’s father really mean?

30. According to the writer, fish are most likely to be found____. .
A. in deep water on sunny days B. in deep water on cloudy days
C. in shallow water under sunlight D. in shallow water under waterside trees
31. After entering the business world, the author found_____.
A. it easy to think like a customer B. his father’s fishing advice inspiring
C. his first boss’s sales ideas quite right D. it difficult to sell services to poor people
D
3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to create things we need very quickly and easily using 3D printers. But can you imagine printing food?
Some scientists are trying to change the dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will be as common as the microwave oven or blender.
Scientists say that it’ll be quite easy: you simply have to select a recipe(食谱)and put the raw food ‘inks’ into the printer. You can also modify (修改) the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and nutritious meals.
Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing, transporting and packaging processes as food production would be a lot more efficient. For example, alternative ingredients such as proteins from algae, beetroot leaves and insects could be converted into tasty products.
Printing food could also help people who suffer from dysphasia (a swallowing disorder). They could program the printer to print softer versions of their favorite foods so that they would not have trouble in swallowing them.
However, some people think that a future of 3D food printing would be a disaster. It could take away many jobs, including those from growing, transporting and packaging food. Imagine a world where there was no need for farming or growing crops and the same tastes could be printed from a raw “food ink”. Likewise, traditional cafes and restaurants might lose business. Also, there are concerns about the nutritional value of printed food: is it really possible to be get the nutrients we need from food–based inks and gels(凝胶)?
What’s more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pleasure of cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a button.
32. Which of the following best describes 3D food printing?
A. Quick and popular. B. Easy and efficient.
C. Nutritious and tasty. D. Soft and convenient.
33. Why do some think that 3D food printing would be a disaster?
A. Traditional food would disappear. B. We could all eat the same food.
C. It would affect the people’s health. D. Many people could lose their jobs.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. 3D food printing will replace traditional cooking.
B. The future of 3D food printing is uncertain.
C. 3D food printing would be a failure.
D. It would hurt our tradition of food culture.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Can 3D printing create everything?
B. 3D food “printing”: coming to the kitchen
C. 3D—printing food will be in fashion!
D. The disadvantage of 3D food printing

Sometimes boys and girls find it really hard to properly deal with the relationship with people of the opposite sex 36 .

Don’t fall into early love. The boys and girls at a adolescence (青春期) are rich in feeling. They are easy to regard the friendship as a sign of love and fall in love with each other at an early age. In my opinion, early love is a green apple that can’t be eaten. An apple won’t taste sweet until it is full ripe. 40 Do keep out of early love.
A. First of all, you can make friends with the students who have the same interest and hobby as you.
B. Of course, there are also some special schools and classes that include only boys or girls.
C. If you have problems of this kind, here are some “dos and don’ts” for you to follow.
D. It is very natural for the boys and girls to make friends with each other.
E. As a result, early love should be forbidden by all the teachers and parents.

作文:
Dear Bruce,
How are you getting along with your life? It’s been a long time since I last received your letter. I’m writing to tell you something about what has taken place in my city.
All road signs, which used to be written only in Chinese characters, have been replaced by bilingual ones, standing along the main traffic roads and in the hot tourist attractions in our city. As you know, it is road signs that can show us how to get to our destinations. However, in the past, many foreigners had difficulty in traveling around in our city, some even losing their way sometimes. Now, with the help of bilingual road signs, there is no doubt that more and more foreigners like to come to China. Not only is it easier for foreigners to understand them, but also it is convenient for them to travel, live and study in our city. In addition, we Chinese can also benefit a great deal from them because we can learn English while reading them.
I am deeply convinced that with these bilingual road signs, our city will develop much better and faster. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
