He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.‎ One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought that someone would dance on the beach. So he began to walk faster to catch up.‎ As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn’t dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean.‎ As he got closer he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?” The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfish in the ocean.” “I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?”‎ ‎“The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”‎ ‎“But, young man, don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can’t possibly make a difference!”‎ The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked another starfish, and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”‎ There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can know that gift, we will gain through the strength of our visions the power to shape the future.‎ We must each find our starfish. The country is known for its harp(竖琴) and flute(长笛) music. Ireland also has some fun dances.‎ Lots of Irish moved to America around 1850 because they were starving. The Irish eat lots of potatoes. But at that time potatoes there were dying.‎ Irish around the world celebrate St. Patrick’s Day every March 17. St. Patrick taught the Irish about Christianity(基督教). Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.‎ ‎ Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.‎ ‎ Do you know what a ‘territory’ is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (声称) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.‎ ‎ If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.‎ ‎ Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.‎ ‎ You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.‎ ‎43. Some scientists believe that most of the time bird’s singing is actually________.‎ A. an expression of happiness B. a way of warning C. an expression of anger D. a way of greeting ‎44. What is a bird’s ‘territory’?‎ A. A place where families of other species are not accepted.‎ B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.‎ C. An area for which birds fight against each other.‎ D. An area which a bird considers to be its own.‎ ‎45. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?‎ A. Because they want to invite more friends.‎ B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.‎ C. Because they want to find outsiders around.‎ D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears ‎46. How does the writer explain bird’s singing?‎ A. By comparing birds with human beings. B. By reporting experiment results.‎ C. By describing birds’ daily life. D. By telling a bird’s story.‎ ‎ ‎ D ‎ These simple ways can increase your popularity(受欢迎度) and win you more friends, so why not try them?‎ ‎● FOCUSING ON OTHERS This will reduce any shyness you may have. You’ll be more relaxed and therefore more natural and fun. And you will get more good---people will love the fact that you’re paying attention to them while you don’t have to worry about what people think of you.‎ ‎● LOOKING PEOPLE IN THE EYE Making eye contact is very important because it shows you’re interested in them. If you let your eyes wander(游移) or keep looking over their shoulder, people will feel slighted, and they’ll like you less they would otherwise.‎ ‎● ASKING QUESTIONS Doing this gives you two advantages. It shows other people that you are indeed paying attention and that you consider what they are telling you important. Being sure to follow up when you’ve shared a conversation with someone about something important in his/her life, be sure to ask about it later. This shows that you listen and you care.‎ ‎● MAKING AN EFFORT TO SMILE A smile means acceptance, and that makes people open up to you. Make a conscious(有意识的) effort(努力) one day to smile at the people you stay or work with and watch how well they respond to you.‎ ‎● BEING RELIABLE People appreciate those who help them, and they quickly begin to hate those who don’t.‎ ‎47. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule.‎ Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when I’m already hungry and there is nothing ready to eat. So think about of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials ready? 67 ‎ Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? 68 it ‎ takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.‎ ‎69 This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.‎ Hopefully that gives you a good start. 70 and don’t let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!‎ A. Try new things.‎ B. Ability is easily improved.‎ C. Make three or four instead.‎ D. Understand your food better.‎ E. Cooking is a burden for many people.‎ F. It is indeed a great pleasure to have this chance to address such a large audience this evening. I’m Pierre Chabreau from the University of Marseille. At the moment, I’m carrying out research in Senegal for the United Nations, as part of a project to increase world food production. Before I get on to what exactly we did in our research, I would like to explain briefly the purpose behind it. Quite simply, my subject is rice. As you all know, rice is the main food for millions of people in the world. So, if rice crops fail, millions of people starve and die. And they do fail, very often through disease. Now, what my colleagues and I have been doing out in the field in Senegal, as well as in the university laboratories, is to try to produce a disease-resisting variety of rice — a particular kind of rice which will resist disease…in other words, a stronger type of rice.‎
