I was just in France to visit my grandmother who is very dear to me. I don’t get to cross the Atlantic very often, and she’s now 96 years old, so every time I go visit, the two of us well know that it might be the last time we see each other.
Last time I visited her in December of 2012, I did some short video interviews about her life. I asked her about her greatest memories and life learnings so far, her favorite books, foods and stories. I learned a lot of amazing new things about her I never knew before. These were very close conversations and a very special time for both of us.
This year, I did not really have questions, only a great force for her to know how loved she is. Before leaving, I was looking for a way to leave something meaningful to behind besides the memory of our time together. So I wrote her five
different love and appreciation notes to let her know how much she means to me, and hid them in different places where I knew she would finally find them…
I left really happy knowing that these cards would surely cheer her up after I left. She called me as I was traveling back to Paris to catch my plane back to the US and said: “I found your three cards! By the time I discovered the third, I was laughing out loud! They did me so much good. Thank you so much!” I smiled to myself, knowing she still had two more to go! It was Sunday, so my guess is that she had not checked her mailbox and had not yet driven her car!
As I was sitting on the plane back to the United States,I remembered that one of my friends’ guiding ways is to treat everyone like family, and so I was thinking about ways to practice that in different settings, including on a plane ride. I decided that on my next flight, I would bring and write five appreciation cards for different people on the plane.

23. What might be the best title of the passage?
A. The Wonderful Time with Grandmother
B. The Meaningful Love Notes
C. The Person Who Influences Me Most
D. The Family Has an Old, a Treasure
B
I'll be working this Christmas. My job? Santa Claus with white beard and red clothes. I'll be joining thousands of volunteers in Britain who go and help homeless and elderly people as well as poor children.
Unity comes to life at this time of the year. It's cold and many people feel lonely. I’ll be there for them. I was inspired by a woman in Scotland —Beatrice Cadell has just celebrated her 80th birthday and instead of presents for her, she asked her friends to buy toys. They will be given to a toy bank— free toys for children whose parents can’t afford to buy them any.
Cadell said: “Everyone that turned up to my birthday was absolutely brilliant! Somebody else can benefit. We don’t need it. We’re old.”
There are plenty of places which welcome a helping hand at Christmas. The charity Crisis at Christmas, for example, has been looking for more than 10,000 volunteers to assist guests in their centres for homeless people. Volunteers with specialist skills like dentists, hairdressers, lorry drivers and performers are particularly welcome.
Another organization, Community Christmas, needs volunteers who wish to offer company to lonely, elderly people on Christmas Day—it can be over a full lunch or just a cup of tea. They have a website with a location page so that good Samaritans (好心人) can register their interest in helping out and find out more.
Scrooge is a character very much associated with this time of year. He’s the central figure in A Christmas Carol, a classic by the English writer Charles Dickens. Scrooge is a selfish man who only helps himself. In the world of volunteering, there’s no Scrooge in sight. We're all proud and happy Santas. Merry Christmas!
24. What will the author do over the festival period?
A. Go shopping. B. Take part in a party.
C. Enjoy a cup of tea. D. Work as a volunteer.
25. Which of the following best describes Cadell?
A. Strict. B. Energetic. C. Kind-hearted. D. Traditional.
26. What does the word “they” in the second paragraph refer to?
A. Friends. B. Toys. C. Parents. D. Children.
27. What is the main purpose of Community Christmas?
A. To attend on lonely people.
B. To advertise for their website.
C. To look for people of specialist skills.
D. To offer help to good Samaritans
C
When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所).I suggested that they should stay at ‘bed and breakfast’ houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn’t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.”
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought ‘VACANCIES’ meant ‘holidays’, because the Spanish word for ‘holidays” is ‘vacaciones’. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said ‘VACANCIES’, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said ‘NO VACANCIES’, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed at this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word ‘DIVERSION’ means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word ‘DIVERSION’ on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said ‘Thank you’ in French, I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that ‘Thank you’ in French means ‘No, thank you.’
28. Why did the author suggest his friends staying at bed and breakfast houses?
A. It would be much cheaper than staying in hotels.
B. It would be convenient for them to have dinner together.
C. They would be able to practise their English.
D. There would be no problem about finding accommodation there.
29. If you see a road sign that says ‘DIVERSION’ in London, you will _________.
A. fall into a large hole
B. find the road blocked by people
C. have a lot of fun and enjoy yourself
D. have to take a different road
30. What did the author really mean when the coffee pot was taken away?
A. He would finish drinking his coffee.
B. He was expecting another cup of coffee.
C. He meant that he didn’t want any more.
D. He has already had enough coffee.

How to Work a Room
A leader with a good network can improve a business. Anyone can become a good networker. The way you “work a room” will be different depending on your character. Confident people can naturally dive into the thick of things and make many connections. 31
Here are several top tips for turning a room full of strangers into a trusted network:
32
Don’t just go because you’ve been invited. First, understand what you’re trying to achieve and what you are able to hand in.
Be selective
Not all chances are created equal. Choose some that you enjoy, that fit your
goals and where you want to go regularly.
33
Take yourself out of the situation and listen to the other person.
Don’t collect cards
It’s not a game. It’s the quality of relationships, not the number of contacts(联系人) that counts.
Connect others
Be helpful and bring others together; they won’t forget it.
Take notes
34 So write down notes—on their business cards if necessary and proper.
Follow up
If you’ve spent time talking to someone, then don’t waste that time. 35
A. Build relationships
B. Share your achievements
C. Be an active listener
D. Be clear about your aims
E. Remembering names and faces can be hard.
F. Email or call them afterwards and try to meet up again.
G. However, less confident people can still build up a useful bank of contacts.
