As a cashier, earlier this year, Ishmael Gilbert was working at his local Target when an elderly
woman entered his check-out line. As Gilbert rang up the woman’s items, she pulled out a bunch of coins to pay for each item, separately, in change.
Standing behind the woman was a busy working mom named Bigler, who complained in a low voice. Realizing she was holding up the line, the older woman became awkward. But her cashier, Gilbert, comforted her and helped her count her coins patiently.
Bilger then experienced a shift (转变) as she watched Gilbert treat the elderly woman. She took a photo of Gilbert doing his job and posted it on Wechat, praising his kindness.
Soon Gilbert found himself at the center of the media’s attention. Many people from other states started coming in, just to shake hands and take pictures. One person who ended up coming into that Target was the manager of a local health center. But she didn’t want a picture with Gilbert.
“I was helping out, once again, another customer,” Gilbert said. “The manager saw me do the same thing, and when she came to my line, she said, ‘Hey, I like what you just did with her. That’s really good customer service.’”
That woman gave Gilbert her card and asked him to call her. When he did, the two talked about an open position working with patients at the center, and Gilbert agreed to go in for an interview. On the interview, she had Gilbert talk to other managers about his story and how he approached his customers. “They said they could really use that at the clinic,” Gilbert said.
The 20-year-old young man now works at Fresenius Medical Care as a patient care technician. “It’s been going great,” Gilbert says of his new job. “When blessings come my way, it’s not always good to ask why. Sometimes, just take them as they come.

You can’t breathe properly or can’t get enough air into your lungs because there is something in your throat when you choke. Choking can make the person unable to breathe, talk, or even make noise. Worse still, because the body needs oxygen to stay alive, when oxygen can’t reach the lungs and the brain, a person can become unconscious, suffer from brain damage, and even die within minutes.
Choking is a serious thing. If you think someone is choking, shout for help and have somebody call 911 right away. If you can do it properly and safely, you can give him or her first aid. In other words, you can get behind the choking person and then give a certain kind of quick squeeze in the middle of the stomach. This squeeze sends a quick powerful burst of air from the person’s lungs upward, removing the problem food or object and often sending it flying out of the person’s mouth
Choking is sometimes dangerous. Luckily, something can be done to prevent it. For example, be extremely careful when you’re eating certain foods that are easy to choke on. They include things like hot dogs, nuts, grapes, raw car-rots, popcorn, and hard candy. Check food labels to make sure that the food isn’t the kind that can lead to choking. Also you can sit down, take small bites and don’t talk or laugh when your mouth is filled with food!
In addition, look out for the little boys and girls. Babies and young children love to put things in their mouths so help keep them safe by picking up anything off the floor that might be risky to swallow--like coins. Keep toys with small parts in some place young children can’t get to, and never share your food or candy with a baby.
28. What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A. Causes of choking. B. Harm of choking.
C. Signs of choking. D. Examples of choking.
29. What first aid should be given to a choking sufferer?
A. Pouring some water into his mouth.
B. Trying to clear the thing of his throat.
C. Asking the people present for help.
D. Gently pressing him on the back.
30. According to the passage, when we eat, we need to .
A. laugh as loudly as possible when eating
B. make sure the ingredients are easy to find
C. check whether the food labels are correct
D. be cautious about what we are eating
31. To keep choking from happening to kids, we should .
A. offer them toys with small parts
B. talk to them while we are feeding them
C. keep dangerous things out of their reach
D. forbid them from eating too many candies
D
Rice developed in China that can be planted in seawater has been successfully grown in a test field in Dubai, reports the Xinhua News Agency.
Developing a new type of rice takes a lot of time, but that doesn’t worry 88-year-old Yuan Longping, China’s famous rice scientist, in the least. Yuan, best known as the country’s “father of hybrid rice”, set his eyes on seawater rice two years ago.
Seawater rice, also known as salt-alkali-tolerant rice, is designed to grow in tidal flats and on saline-alkaline land, and can survive in seawater. Dubai has plans to use 10 percent of the land to plant seawater rice, as part of efforts to improve the country’s food security and to protect the local ecosystem.
The Sea-Rice Research and Development Center in Qingdao, led by Yuan Longping, started the experiment in January. Researchers selected scores of samples of the seawater tolerant types to plant in a desert field to judge their suitability.
According to an evaluation undertaken last week of early-maturing rice samples, it’s expected that the output will reach 750 kilos per square kilometer, and that two samples could produce 600
kilos per square kilometer, in line with the expectations of researchers. The evaluation of the late-maturing rice samples will start in late June.
The Sea-Rice Research and Development Center and the team in Dubai will explore setting up a 100-hectare test field in the second half of this year, and a 100-hectare standard field in 2019, said Liu Jiayin, from the Qingdao research center. He added, China is also encouraging the saltwater rice in Southeast and South Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and India. Seawater rice could finally feed 80-200 million people in the future.

A. The seawater rice experiment will be continued in Dubai.

How to Remember What You Read
Reading is important. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you’ve read! 36 You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images (形象) may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read.
● 37
If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, likely you won’t be able to remember
what you read. It’s a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don’t understand what you’re reading, how would you remember it? But there are a few things you can do... Use a dictionary: look up the difficult words.
●Are you connected?
Does a character remind you of a friend? Doesn’t the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you, and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away. 38
How willing are you to make the connections happen?
●Read it; hear it; be it!
Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some characters into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He’d make faces in the mirror, and change his voice for each character. 39
●How often do you read?
If you read frequently, you’ll likely have an easier time with remembering what you’re reading (and what you’ve read). 40 As you make reading a regular part of your life, you’ll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text better. You’ll learn to enjoy literature—as you remember what you read!
A. Are you confused?
B. Practice makes perfect.
C. What’s your motivation?
D. Marking helps you remember what you read.
E. To be honest, memory is sometimes a tricky thing.
F. You can do the same thing when you are reading the text!
G. But other books require a great deal of more work on your part.

I am delighted to hear from you, knowing you want to learn Chinese after watching the military parade ceremony held in our country to celebrate the 70th anniversary founding of the People’s Republic of China. I’m writing to give you some tips on how to learn Chinese well .
