When it comes to academic achievement, intelligence is an important factor——but it is certainly not the only, or even the most important factor.
According to a new Australian study, personality is a better predictor of success in school than intelligence as measured by traditional standardized tests. Specifically, students who were more hard-working and opener perform better academically than those who were merely intelligent.
Australian researchers compared measurements of the Big Five personality traits (特性)——extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to experience——to college students’ grades and test scores. They asked students to complete personality self-assessment, and also asked others who knew the students well to complete assessments of them. They found that the students’ self-assessments were as effective as intelligence in predicting academic performance, and that the reports from those who knew them well were nearly four times more accurate in predicting academic performance than intelligence.
The researchers found that the factors of openness and conscientiousness had the largest influence on academic success, in agreement with previous research which has linked these two traits with various types of achievement Studies have shown openness to experience which has to do with intellectual curiosity, and how excited we get to acquire new information——to be the number-one predictor of creative achievement. Conscientiousness, on the other hand, is only one of the Big Five traits that is consistently predicting success.
“In practical terms, the amount of effort students are prepared to put in, and where that effort is focused, are at least as important as whether the students are smart,” the study’s lead author, Dr. Arthur Poropat of Griffith University’s School of Applied Psychology, said in a statement. “And a student with the most helpful personality will score a full grade higher than an average student in this regard.”
The findings come as an important reminder that children who may not be considered
“smart” by traditional measures may still become highly successful through their own efforts. And since personality may be more malleable (可塑的) than intellectual capability, helping struggling students develop beneficial personality traits——particularly intellectual curiosity and a strong sense of work responsibility——may be a powerful means of improving academic performance. Fortunately, high-IQ students who struggle more with attitude and social skills can also learn to develop these qualities.

To deal with this, Cho and his team have designed a glove made from a flexible, rubberlike material. It has three fingers that fit over the wearer’s thumb, index finger and middle finger. Wires attached to those fingers can be moved by a small motor. The motor, controlled by a simple switch (开关), pulls on the wires to open and close the hand. The result is a glove that can help people hold objects tightly.
Cho’s group calls its invention the Exo-Glove Poly. Exo is from the Greek for “outside”. It refers to the fact that this glove is worn outside the user’s body. Poly, the Greek for “many”, refers to the fact that the glove’s rubberlike material is a polymer.
Other researchers have designed gloves that pick up nerve impulses (神经冲动) from a user’s arm muscles to help control a glove’s movements. But those earlier devices were relatively complex. That means users can wash their hands or clean dishes while wearing it. The glove also can be removed and washed when it gets dirty.
Often it takes years from when an engineer first has an idea to the time a useful product becomes available for sale. That delay can be especially frustrating when the device is intended to help someone who is disabled. But a new engineering competition might help speed innovations (新发明) from the lab to the people in need.
It is called Cybathlon. This is a contest for cyber-systems. This event is intended to promote new and more muscle-assisting research across medicine, robotics, engineering and chemistry. In the ninth grade, my ways of expression expanded into acting. Through acting, I have leaned how to communicate physically, verbally and emotionally. When I act, I am able to fall into the roles. Each role is a representation of me. I started acting with the role of Mrs. Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol. Two years later, I received my biggest part as a narrator (叙述着) in our production of Romeo and Juliet.
Through acting and writing. I have developed characters like the strong and outgoing women in my family. I have come to realize that writing and acting have helped me to become more independent and confident. Acting has increased my ability to work
through the problems of everyday life.

Many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, so they will understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers should listen more to their students, then they can meet their needs better, and place themselves in a good relationship with their students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they will help and learn from each other, and a friendship
is likely to be formed.
What I want to stress is that each of us should listen more to others. Show your respect and never stop others till they finish their talk; show your interest by a supportive silence or a knowing smile; be open-minded to different opinions even though you don’t like them. In a word, good listening can we get closer to each other.
