To American visitors, Iceland is a very interesting country, partly because it is different in so many ways from what he or she is used to seeing at home. There are quite a few things that are not done, or that do not exist on the island - quite a few “No’s”.
There is no pollution, for instance. No dogs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is no television on Thursdays or during the entire month of July, and only three hours of black-and-white TV the rest of the time. There is no hard liquor(酒)on Wednesdays and no beer at any time. There are no handguns; only one jail of thirty-five cells(牢房) in the entire land ----an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people.
There is no army, air force or navy. There is no tipping for anything. There are no large stores open on Saturdays or Sundays. Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is no darkness in summer and no daylight in winter. But thanks to Gulf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees Fahrenheit to 52 degrees in July.
The rules on television, liquor, and guns are the result of governmental decision. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous(巨大的) geyser(间歇泉)and the thousands of hot springs that come out of the ground. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact, Iceland uses only 3 percent of all its available power.
Iceland has been described as a democratic (民主的) independent country where more fish are caught and more books published per person than anywhere else in the world. The Icelanders have always felt a particular love for literature. They composed their first works in the ninth and tenth centuries AD. These works were poems and tales about the kings, heroes, and heroines of Iceland and Norway. At first the stories were memorized and passed from generation to generation. The Icelanders have never stopped writing ever since. “Rather shoeless than bookless,” they proudly say.

Less than 60 percent of students now entering four-year American colleges are likely to graduate. The completion rate is lower for almost any other wealthy country, and worst for poor and minority students.
On Tuesday President Obama gave a nationally broadcast speech to students about the importance of staying in school. He spoke on the first day of classes at a high school in Virginia. He talked about personal responsibility, and used himself as an example of someone who overcame difficulties.
“My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mother who had to work and struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn’t always able to give me things other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and felt like I didn’t fit in,” said President Obama.
But he told students that problems in their own lives should not stop them from learning. “There’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class or dropping out of school. There’s no excuse for not trying.”
This was not the first presidential speech to students. Ronald Reagan spoke from the White House in 1998 and George H. W. Bush spoke from a school in Washington in 1991.
But many conservatives criticized plans for the speech. Some called it “socialized education” or federal interference in local schools. Others feared it would be too political. Some schools decided not to show the speech. But the White House released the text on Monday, and that calmed a lot of critics.
On Sunday, on the CBS program “Face the Nation”, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said, “30 percent of students do not graduate from our school”. He called the dropout rate “staggering”(惊人的). It represents more than a million students every year who entered ninth grade but did not complete 12th grade.
28. President Obama gave a nationally broadcast speech on Tuesday to ________.
A.encourage students to drop out when they dislike studies
B.criticize the students who talked back to their parents
C.tell the students how he struggled to go to school in his childhood
D.persuade students to stick to schooling even if they have problems
29. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A.Obama’s mother left him when he was two years old.
B.George H .W. Bush spoke to students in 1998.
C.Some people considered Obama’s speech to be too political.
D.The White House decided not to release the text on Monday.
30. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.there is 40 percent of dropout in high school
B.not all the people support the president’s speech
C.the dropout rate of American schools is low
D.only one million students can finish 12th grade each year
31. The best title of the passage can be “________”.
A. Obama Encourages Students to Carry on Studies
B. Amazing Dropout Rate of the US
C. Obama’s Speech Met Criticism
D. Obama’s Hard Childhood

According to some researchers, you should not praise children for everything that they do. It does not help them build self-confidence.
Most parents and teachers agree that praise can help increase children’s self-confidence —the more, the better. However, according to some researchers, only proper praise is good for children. If adults praise everything children do, it makes children look for praise all the time, not trying to do their best. “Teachers should not say things like ‘good job’ or ‘nice work’ whenever a child does something. They should encourage them to continue to improve,” some researchers advise.
Another idea is that children with high self-confidence are happier, and do better at school. About this, Marshall Duke, a researcher in children, says, “Self-confidence does not make children happier, get more, or become able to do more. Finding a child’s strengths (强项) and
developing them can help build confidence more than too much praise can.” Praise also loses its effect (影响) if it is given equally to all students.
“It’s important to tell children the truth about what they’ve done. Honest feedback (反馈) is far better than empty praise,” Duke adds. “People have got into the habit of not telling children when they’re wrong. That makes it hard for them to deal with difficulties when they grow up. That’s just how the world is.”
32. According to some researchers, if parents praise their children too much, their children will ______.
A. always look for praise
B. increase self-confidence
C. try their best to study
D. behave better in their daily life
33. In order to build self-confidence in children, some researchers advise parents to_____.
A. make children live more happily
B. let their children do more difficult work
C. help their children get higher scores
D. encourage their children to improve
34. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the passage?
A. Praise makes children become successful.
B. Children with high self-confidence are happier than others.
C. The same praise for all children has no meaning.
D. Praise changes children a lot.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. It’s important to have the habit of praising children.
B. Children should know their mistakes as soon as possible.
C. We should praise children honestly and tell them their mistakes.
D. What children with high self-confidence are like.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Tips for Cooking on a Tight Schedule
From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don't cook more often: ability, money, and time. 36 Money is a topic I'll save for another day. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:
1. Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when I'm already hungry and there's nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to
cook? Do you have the right materials already? 37
2. Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? 38 It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.
3. 39 This may surprise you,but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try,the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.
Hopefully that gives you a good start. 40 And don't let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!
A. Ability is easily improved.
B. Try new things.
C. Understand your food better.
D. Make three or four instead.
E. Cooking is a burden for many people.
F. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on.
G. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.

作文答案
Dear Li Hua,
How are things going? In your last letter you talked about your recent worry about your study, mentioning that your deskmate often interrupts you by asking questions. Now I’d like to share my opinion with you.
First of all, there’s no need to worry about your study. When you explain something to others, you can get a better understanding of it, which can improve yourself greatly. So it’s good for you. Secondly, as we all know, everyone has strengths as well as weaknesses. Although your deskmate is not good at lessons, he might do well in other fields like sports or arts. Therefore, you can learn from each other. In addition, top students can help slower ones gain self-confidence by helping them with their lessons. It may help develop a friendship that both of you will treasure all your life.
I hope my advice can help you. And best luck with your learning.
