Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word “cold”. For centuries, the body's blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, for example, are said to be coldblooded. Coldblooded people act in merciless ways. They may do brutal things to others, and not by accident. For example,a newspaper says the police are searching for a coldblooded killer. The killer
murdered someone, not in selfdefence. He seemed to kill for no reason, and with no emotion,as if taking someone's life meant nothing.
Cold can affect other parts of the body, the feet, for example. Heavy socks can warm your feet,if your feet are really cold. But there is an expression—to get cold feet—that has nothing to do with cold or your feet.
The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned. All the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being the president when you understand the situation.
Cold can also affect your shoulder. You give someone the cold shoulder when you refuse to speak to them. You treat them in a distant and cold way. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning your back towards someone, instead of speaking to him facetoface. You may give the cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you or to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.
Out in the cold is an expression often heard. It means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay rise, and that he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
24.The passage is intended to tell us that ________.
A.cold weather has a great effect on human bodies
B.many English expressions contain the word “cold”
C.cold is a word closely linked with human emotions
D.the word “cold” has many different meanings in English
25.Which of the following expressions can best describe a person who is unwilling to offer anything to others?
A.Coldblooded. B.To get cold feet.
C.A cold shoulder. D.A cold fish.
26.You can say Tom ________ if the teacher gives all the boys except him a pen as a prize.
A.is given the cold shoulder B.is left out in the cold
C.has got cold feet D.is murdered by a coldblooded killer
27.We can draw a conclusion from the passage that ________.
A.all the expressions containing the word “cold” have a negative meaning
B.all the expressions containing the word “cold” have something to do with cold
C.people who show no human emotions or feelings have cold blood
D.many parts of the human body can be badly affected by cold

I was ever bullied badly when I was in high school. One kid in particular would try to make me feel worse in every way he knew. For example, he would throw stuff at me constantly, hit me on the head, punch(殴打)me, call me ugly and stupid, make fun of me and, of course tell me he would beat me up if I ever fought back. It was like his daily mission. And
it was my daily mission to just get through the day. What could I say? It made my world very small because that was my main focus—just surviving. Everything else fell by the wayside. Unfortunately, that included any form of social life. So not only was my world tiny, but it was very lonely
Looking back to that time, which was about 11 years ago, my biggest mistake was not bringing anyone into that world of mine. I was too proud (and embarrassed) to get help. I would rather not face the fact that I needed help because in my mind, that would mean that the bully won. It would also mean that I was weak.
Let me just say this: bullying someone is a weak choice. The only reason why they come after you is that they think you won't do anything about it. Does that make anyone strong? Absolutely not. Be stronger—ask a parent, a teacher or a friend for help. Simply admit that you are struggling and need help.
You can put it like this, "Somebody who is weak and trying to build himself or herself up has chosen to do that by putting me down. The only reason why they are
doing that is that I am nice and I haven't done anything about it yet. Well I am through putting up with this. I have basic human rights that they are trying to take away to feel better and that is just not OK. How do I handle this? I don't want the pain cycle to continue and I don't want to become someone I don't want to be.

29.What did the author do when he was bullied?
A.He just hoped that he could survive the day. B.He fell by the wayside
C.He called for help immediately D.He fought back bravely.
30.The author suggests___________ to fight bullies.
A.getting used to the pain as soon as possible
B.keeping it a secret inside and reducing your social life
C.looking for help from parents, teachers or friends
D.promoting the understanding of basic human rights
31.The author probably wrote this article to________________
A.admit that he had been treated badly at school
B.describe how he got rid of his weak
C.show how grateful he was to those who helped hit
D.share his experience and ideas on dealing with bullies

Each year, millions of people go abroad to work, study or travel. It's a great way to find out what life is like in another part of the world! You're probably hoping to make new friends and learn about the culture in your host country—everything from attitudes and beliefs to social customs and popular foods. But constantly having to deal with new situations can be frustrating, even stressful.
Homesickness, stress, fear and confusion are all symptoms of "culture shock". At first, you may feel like getting on the plane and heading home. It's OK to have those
feelings, and the following are some tips to help you handle the challenges that you will face.
Don't expect to be perfect. You may feel frustrated that you have culture shock, especially since you probably spent so much time preparing for your trip. No matter how much information you read, or how well you speak the host language, it is natural to feel overwhelmed sometimes. If you give yourself some time, things will gradually get easier.
Have an open mind. While it's certainly OK to feel frustration or confusion in your new surroundings, try not to form an opinion about the new culture too soon. Don't think of the host culture as better or worse, just different—you'll be more willing to try new things.
Participate. This is obvious, but everybody needs to be reminded. Just watching life go on around you isn't good enough. You really need to try things for yourself. Don't worry about making a mistake; people in your host country will generally be very understanding and willing to help if you have questions.
Your study abroad experience is a unique and special time in your life—one that you'll never forget. If you follow our suggestions, you'll be able to handle it well, and have a wonderful time. Good luck!
32.What is culture shock according to the passage?
A.Something that you feel surprised and shocked at.
B.The problems you have when you go to another country.
C.The frightening feelings you have.
D.Something different from your own culture.
33.What should you do when you feel depressed?
A.Go back to your own homeland.
B.Talk to someone about your problems.
C.Give yourself some time to get used to it.
D.Stop thinking of it.
34.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.It is natural to feel overwhelmed sometimes.
B.Not everything is perfect.
C.Try to form the opinion about the new culture as soon as possible.
D.Tell others about your problems.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.How to overcome culture shock.
B.Why people have culture shock.
C.Who might have culture shock.
D.When you will have culture shock.

Dear Peter,
I came back from England last week. I really want to convey my heartfelt appreciation to you for your kind assistance during my study in England.
Thanks to your help, I found a wonderful host family, whose hospitality(好客) made me feel at home. What’s more, it’s really kind of you to take me to all kinds of interesting activities, which have taught me what I can’t learn from the textbooks and broadened my mind. It was your help that made me get used/accustomed to the life there easily. Why not come to China next time? I will show you around the places of interest and tourist attractions.
Please accept my sincere gratitude and best wishes again. Looking forward to your coming soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Peter,
I came back from England last week. Reflecting on(回顾;反思) the days I spent studying there, I can’t forget your generous help during my stay.
I’m grateful that you offered me your help when I was wondering how to find a host family. You also encouraged me to take part in various activities, which enabled me to make new friends and relax myself. But for(要不是) your help, it would have been hard for me to fit into(适应) the new environment.
By the way, are you interested in paying a visit to China this summer? I’m pleased to take you on a tour of our places of interest and I’m sure you’ll have fun here.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Peter,
I came back from England last week I’m writing to express my appreciation to you. I couldn’t have had such a wonderful trip without your help.
On arrival in Britain, to be honest, I was a bit nervous, for it was the first time I had left my parents and travelled alone. Fortunately, the host family you recommended(推荐) to me are so hospitable(好客的) that they not only made me feel at home, but also helped me adapt to(适应) the new environment soon. What’s more, you brought me to any famous museums, which both enriched my study life and broadened my horizon(开阔视野). I couldn’t thank you enough for all of these.
In return, I’d like to invite you to spend your holiday in China this summer.
I’m looking forward to your early replay.
Yours,
Li Hua
