第二部分:阅读理解 (共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Watching TV should be a treat for your eyes and senses. Look for the following points, and buy a secondhand TV set only when you are satisfied that it is a good deal.
Several questions
Why is the TV in a secondhand store put up for sale? Did the owner put it up for sale because it broke down? Did he sell it because the picture was not good enough? Or did he do that just because he got bored of it and bought a new one for himself? These are questions that must be answered before you consider buying a used TV.
Price
The price of a secondhand television set depends on a number of factors, like the time gap between its buying and selling dates, the presence or absence of special features, the model and brand of the TV, etc. Narrow down your choice on the basis of your preference, and then check if it is worth it.
Getting a clear picture on the screen is a basic necessity. If you are buying an LCD or an LED TV, check for factors like contrast, resolution(分辨率), color and video quality, and make sure you like what you see. Some television sets have screens that show a picture with spots all over it. It goes without saying that you should steer clear of such television sets.
Audio
The audio is as important as the video. Gone are the days when silent movies were “the thing”. It wouldn't be any fun to watch a basketball match without being able to listen to the thunderous applause of the audience.
The room
There is no point in buying a television set bigger than the wall you intend to hang it on. If the room in which you intend to place the TV is big enough, then buying a small television would kill the purpose of watching television and not let you enjoy it to the fullest. So, keep in mind the size of your room. A TV with a big screen can be a problem for rooms that are small.
21. What does the underlined part “steer clear of” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. clean up. B. clear up. C. stay away from. D. stop away from.
22. What is the size of a TV you buy controlled by?
A. Your budget. B. The size of the wall and the room.
C. Your preference. D. The connection devices.
23. What does the writer mainly intend to do by writing this passage?
A. To blame readers for buying a used TV at random.
B. To encourage readers to buy a used TV without delay.
C. To inspire readers to keep the sense of curiosity about a used TV.
D. To inform readers how to buy a used TV.
B
A poor farmer lived alone with his aged mother. They lived a poor life, and their home was at the foot of a mountain.
The area was under the control of a cruel leader. One day, he ordered, “Everyone must take the old people to the top of the mountain. Then, they must leave them there to die.”
When the farmer heard the news, his heart broke. He loved his mother very much, but he didn’t think twice about obeying the order.
After he prepared some food and water, he lifted his mother onto his back. Then, he started hiking up the mountain. The farmer’s journey was long and painful. He didn’t take a straight path, though. Instead, he went from one path to another without looking.
His mother saw that. She worried that he would get lost on his way home. So, she marked the way with little branches. When they reached the top of the mountain, she told her son what she did.
The farmer knew his mother loved him. He also knew he couldn't leave her there. He said, “We’ll follow your marks home, and we’ll die together.” At home, the farmer hid his mother in their kitchen closet. He kept her safe and provided her with everything she needed.
One day, the leader commanded, “I want a rope of ashes.” The news frightened everyone. They didn't want to make him angry. However, the farmer’s aged mother knew what to do. Her idea was a success.
The leader asked how the farmer did it. So, the farmer told the truth. That reminded the
leader of the saying,“Wisdom comes with age.”He then realized his mistakes and changed.
24. Why didn’t the farmer take a straight path?
A. Because he was afraid of getting lost.
B. Because he hoped to find something to eat.
C. Because he wouldn’t leave her mother alone.
D. Because he was not familiar with the mountain.
25. Why didn’t the people want to anger the leader?
A. They loved him to death. B. They wanted to keep him safe.
C. He would give them all his wisdom. D. He would do something to hurt them.
26. What is true of the farmer’s mother?
A. She didn’t know her son loved her.
B. She asked her son not to obey the leader’s order.
C. She didn’t trust her son to get home by himself.
D. She told her son which paths to take up the mountain.
27. What was it that saved the aged mother’s life?
A. Her wisdom. B. Her son’s idea.
C. The leader's mercy. D. The rope of ashes.

When someone wants a pet that can do tricks, they usually think of a dog. Being humans’ best friends, dogs can learn about 160 words, and they can follow directions. You just need to give them treats. Dogs can also remember animal or human faces they've met, and they won't forget someone hurting them in their entire life.
However, other animals can also learn tricks. Many birds are very smart. Some can pick out colors and answer simple questions. They’ll dance to music and even sing along in English. Pigeons, for example, have so good a memory that they can recognize themselves in the mirror, can remember hundreds of different photos and learn routes to their home from long distances. Parrots are widely recognized as the smartest birds. They can remember many human words and they can even make sentences.
One animal that you probably think can’t do tricks is the spider. However, scientists recently trained one to jump. Many spiders can jump many times their body length, but this one is special.
It jumps every time the scientists command.
Bees can learn tricks, too. A recent study has found that bees are not only quick to learn new skills but that they’ll teach other bees, too. In a lab, some bees learned how to roll a ball into the hole. After they learned the trick, they were rewarded with a sweet treat. Then the bees went to find other bees and taught them how to roll the ball into the hole.
28. What do we know about dogs?
A. They never work for treats. B. They can give directions.
C. They can understand 160 words. D. They can do 160 different tricks.
29. Which animals can teach other animals?
A. Bees. B. Birds. C. Spiders. D. Dogs.
30. What did scientists teach a spider?
A. How to jump higher. B. The best time to jump.
C. How to do a special jump. D. To jump at certain times.
31. Which of the following may serve as the suitable title of the passage?
A. How to raise pet animals B. Animals that can do tricks
C. How to teach animals tricks D. Everything that animals can do
D
When writing a complaint letter, you should keep it short and to the point to help ensure that your letter will be read in its entirety. If you write a sevenpage complaint letter, it's highly unlikely that someone will sit down and read all seven pages.
The complaint letter should be addressed to the customer service department. The address and contact information of the customer service department should be available on the company's products or website.
A printed complaint letter should be written in the business letter format, while an email should be sent in the same format but without the heading(your return address, their address, and the date).
In the first paragraph you should make clear what the issue is. Be sure to include the following information: the time of the issue, location, the name of the person on duty, the name of the product, what the problem is, your account number, model number, price and warranty(保修单) information. Be sure to stick with the facts and avoid putting emotions into your letter.
The next paragraph should state what outcome you would like of the problem. If you received poor service, you could request an apology or a coupon(优惠券). If a product malfunctioned,_you could request that you could exchange the product for a new one or request a refund.
The last paragraph should thank the reader for the time. You can also politely express appreciation over something you like about their company's product or service.
Be sure to keep a copy of the letter for yourself and include photocopies of all documents and envelop them with your letter. You should include your telephone number or email address after your printed name so that they can get in touch with you as soon as possible if necessary.
32. Why should you keep the complaint letter short and to the point?
A. Because the longer it is, the more detailed it will be.
B. Because it can make sure that the letter is taken seriously.
C. Because longer letters can show my emotions.
D. Because short letters are more formal business letters.
33. Where should the date of the complaint letter be in a printed one?
A. In the heading. B. In the first paragraph.
C. In the second paragraph. D. After the printed name.
34. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “malfunctioned”?
A. Failed to function well. B. Met one's need.
C. Was well produced. D. Was wrongly delivered.
35. How is the passage mainly developed?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By showing differences.
C. By describing a process. D. By following time order.

第二节 读后续写(满分25 分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When spring came to the city of Cleveland, Ohio, it did not change Gates Avenue. The people who lived on the pretty streets near Gates Avenue were making gardens, painting their houses and getting their lawn mowers ready for the summer. But Gates Avenue continued to look dirty and ugly.
Gates Avenue was a short street. But it seemed long because it was so ugly. Most of the families who lived there had very little money. They never expected to have much more.
Sometimes the men had jobs and sometimes they didn't. Their houses had not been painted in many years and did not even have running water. The Gates Avenue families carried their water from the hydrants on the street corners.
The street itself was ugly, too. It had no pavement and no streetlight. The railway at one end of Gates Avenue added noise and dirt.
Most of the little girls in the school near Gates Avenue wore pretty new clothes that spring. But the little girl from Gates Avenue wore the same dirty dress that she had worn all winter. It was probably the only dress she owned.
Her teacher sighed. The little girl was so nice! She always worked hard in school;she was always polite and friendly. But her face was dirty and her hair was untidy.
One day the teacher said, “Will you wash your face before you come to school tomorrow morning? Please do that for me.” The teacher could see that girl was pretty under the dirt.
The next morning the child's pretty face had been washed. Her hair was clean and tidy, too. Before the little girl went home that afternoon, the teacher said,“Now, dear, please ask your mother to wash your dress.”
But the little girl continued to wear the dirty dress.“Her mother is probably not interested in her,”the teacher thought. So she bought a bright blue dress and gave it to the little girl. The child took the present and hurried home as fast as she could.
The next morning she came to school in the new blue dress, and she was clean and tidy. She told the teacher,“My mother was surprised when she saw me this morning in my new dress. My father wasn't at home;he had gone to work. But he will see me at supper this evening.”

读后续写
When her father saw her in the new blue dress, he was surprised to find that he had a pretty little girl. When the family sat down to eat supper, he was even more surprised to find a cloth on the table. The family had never used a tablecloth before. “What is the cloth for?” he asked.
“We’re going to be more tidy here,” his wife said. “It isn’t nice to have a house that dirty and untidy when our daughter is so clean.”
After supper the mother started to wash the floors. Her husband watched for a little while without saying anything. Then he went outside into the backyard and began to repair the fence and started digging for a garden. During the next week, the man who lived in the next house watched what the little girl's family was doing. Then he started to paint his house for the first time in ten years. A few days later almost all the families followed suit. A few months later Gates Avenue looked like a different street. People who knew about the changes called it the “Gates Avenue Cleanup.” Who knows what miracles may happen when a teacher gives a little girl a new blue dress?

We are merely unable to move! Once help arrives, we will make another announcement, and let you know how to proceed. In the meantime, please continue to enjoy our many onboard luxuries, like our warm water pool, our tennis courts, and our gym. Our staff will also be handing out free drink in the dining halls. If you have any questions or concerns, please approach one of our crew members. We apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for choosing our cruise line!
