Do you think Great Britain and the United States are alike? Winston Churchill (丘吉尔)once joked that the people of Britain and the people of America are separated(分离) only by their language. Do you think that is true? The British and the Americans both speak English as the official language. However, each uses some different words. We Americans are similar to the British. After all, our country was once owned by Great Britain, so we have a lot in common. But there are many differences between us.
Great Britain has a king or queen, and the leader of the government is the Prime Minister. The United States has no kings or queens. Our leader is the President.
Both the British and Americans use pounds and ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons. Both use miles, yards and feet. Our money is different, though. The British use pounds and pence. Americans use dollars and cents.
Driving in a car is very different in England. They drive on the left side of the road. We drive
on the right. What we call the hood of the car, the British call the “bonnet”. British cars run on “petrol”, which we call gasoline.
In our everyday lives, we do many of the same things as the British. But we describe them differently. A young mother here might push a baby in a baby carriage. A British mom pushes a “pram”. The British watch the “telly”, while we watch TV. We like to eat French fries, but the British call them “chips”. Millions of Americans drink coffee, but most British prefer tea.
So we are different in many ways. But we stay friendly anyway.

When I was a little child, my parents divorced, making my mother a single parent. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life,“Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to do it badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school—walking on my own!
When the Great Depression(大萧条)occurred, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the family. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.
My real change occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was angry that the second-class hotel charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I decided to open a motel(汽车旅馆)for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mother was one of my strongest supporters. We experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world—Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.
12.When Kemmons was a little child, what his mother usually told him was ___.
A.funny B.touching C.fighting D.encouraging
13.From the author’s view, who played the most important part in making him walk back to school again?
A.Mother. B.Teachers. C.Frien D.Relatives.
14.According to the passage, what made Kemmons start a motel by himself?
A.His previous business success of various levels.
B.His terrible experience in the hotel.
C.His mom’s support.
D.His wife’s suggestion.
15.In your opinion, which of the following best describes Kemmons’ mother?
A.Modest, helpful, and hard-working.
B.Careful, helpful and beautiful.
C.Loving, supportive and strong-willed.
D.Strict, sensitive and supportive.

Dear Jim,
Having learned that you'll be a senior high school student, I am delighted. In your last email you mentioned that you were confused about how to study well in your senior high school. Now, I'd like to share my study tips with you.
First, you'd better communicate with your teachers regularly. In this way, they may offer some great advice on both your study and life. Second, why not involve yourself in each class actively, listen to the teacher attentively and take notes carefully so that you can review later? Third, it's a good idea to do your homework on time soon after school, which will help you practice what you have learned and make it fresh in your mind.
I sincerely hope my advice can be helpful to you and that you can enjoy your new school life. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
