It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2007. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. Reading is the key to success in all school subjects. With a bit of creativity, you can help your child enjoy reading more, and encourage him to do more!
Buy or borrow a lot of “fun” books. Choose books that are slightly below his level of reading ability. Don’t forget what your child likes to do when choosing books for him. Compared to people with bad attitudes, people who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. “It’s possible that being upbeat helps the body fight illnesses.” says psychologist(心理学家)Sheldon Cohen, the study’s lead researcher.
In a previous study, Cohen and his colleagues put cold-causing viruses into the noses of 334 healthy adults. People who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop cold symptoms and were also less likely to mention symptoms to their doctors, even when medical tests discovered those symptoms.
Those findings could explain the role positive feelings played, but it was still possible that a person’s personality is what matters. Evidence suggests that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic. This would mean that who we are, not how we feel, decides our chances of catching colds.
To figure out which mattered more, the team interviewed 193 healthy adults. The researchers interviewed each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. At the end of the interviewing period, people got nose drops that contained either cold or flu viruses. Then, each person stayed in an isolated(隔离的)room for 5 or 6 days.
The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get infected. Their symptoms, however, differed depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the previous 2 weeks. Among those who reported good moods and had
been infected with the flu virus, 28 percent developed coughs and stuffy noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 41 percent of people who had been less cheerful.
Scientists argue about whether negative emotions or positive emotions have a stronger influence on how healthy we are. For now, it won’t hurt to look on the bright side more often than not!

The world is not only hungry, but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 75% of the earth’s surface is covered with water, but about 97% of this big amount is sea water, or salt water.
