A letter to Edward, a columnist(报刊专栏作家)
Dear Mr Expert:
I grew up in an unhappy and abusive home. I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20,I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.
Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine — so much so that they make mine theirs.
It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.
I enjoy having my friends here sometimes— it makes the place feel comfortable and warm— but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(隐私)?
Joan
Edward’s reply to Joan
Dear Joan:
If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.
And if you’ve gathered yourfriends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(气氛),you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with— or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.
Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”
24. We can learn from the first letter that Joan Edward ________ .
A. lives away from her parents
B. takes pride in her friends

D. Joan dislikes the boyfriends her friends bring over
26. According to Mr Expert, why can’t Joan tell her friends her feelings?
A. She is afraid of hurting her friends.
B. She does not understand true friendship.
C. Her family experience stops her from doing so.
D. She does not put her needs first.
27. The underlined word “conflict” in the second letter means ________ .
A. dependent life
B. fierce fight
C. bad manners
D. painful feeling

There are little cars that may some day take the place of today’s automobiles(汽车). If everyone drives such a little car in the future, there will be less pollution in the air, there will be more parking space in cities, and the streets will be less crowded. The space now for one car of the usual size can hold at least three such little cars.
The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive. Driving will be safer, too, as these little cars can go only 65 kilometers an hour.
The cars of the future will be fine for going around the city, but they will not be useful for going far away. If the car is powered by electricity, it will have two batteries—one battery for the motor and the other for the horn (喇叭), signals (信号灯), etc. Little cars which are powered by gas will go 45 kilometers before needing to stop for more gas.
If big cars are still used along with the small ones, two sets of roads will be needed to set up in the future. Some roads will be used for the big, fast cars, and other roads will be needed for the small, slower ones.
28. What’s the advantage (优势) of the small cars?
A. There won’t be so much pollution and the small cars won’t be so expensive as the big ones.
B. It will be safer to drive these small cars.
C. There will be more space for cars to park.
D. All of the above.
29. Two sets of roads are necessary in the future in order to .
A. prevent car accidents
B. make the city more beautiful
C. let small cars run fast
D. limit the speed of the cars
30. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. A car of the usual size now is three times as big as the small car.
B. The small car with a speed of 65 kilometers an hour is much more useless than a car of the usual size.
C. the little car will be safer but cost more.
D. The little car will need more gas.
31. The best title for this passage should be .
A. Big Cars and Small Cars
B. How to Drive Small Cars
C. Cars for Tomorrow
D. Cars for Everyone

Many things have happened throughout my life, but recently, I have noticed a change in me. After my junior year in high school, I got a job at Freeport Medical Center; in addition, I worked at New Rice Bow Restaurant two nights a week. I am in school while holding two jobs at the same time, which gives me a lot of responsibilities and takes up a large amount of time.
Working two jobs and staying in school is not exactly what I call fun. However, my heavy workload(工作负担) is worth the trouble because I am getting a lesson about responsibility from it. I work twenty-one hours per week.
This has changed me greatly, considering that I have understood the need to be organized and responsible. Having this knowledge has prepared me for college. All of these points are going to
affect me in the future since I am expecting much more when I move out. Being independent means having more responsibilities, more than what I have now. At least now I have a feeling of what it is going to be like once I am out of my mother’s care. I will have to pay for my own rent, food, clothes and various necessary things.
I have to be a responsible person now in order to pass the tests of life. Hopefully, I will be able to depend upon myself without any help from others. Like everyone else, I want to flourish in the world, and find my meaning of life. In order to finish these tasks, I have to be responsible and be aware (意识,明白) of what I should do so that I can do them right.
32. According to the writer, holding two jobs while staying in school makes him ________.
A. earn enough money to pay for the tuition(学费)
B. be able to move out of the family early
C. be aware of the importance of responsibility
D. have fun out of it
33. According to the author’s opinion, a responsible person should be able to________.
A. master all kinds of living skills B. pass the various tests of life
C. do everything without others’ help D. do part-time jobs besides study
34. The underlined word “flourish” in the last paragraph probably means“________ ”.
A. to swing back and forth B. to live a good and happy life
C. to be responsible for one’s life D. to be aware of what one should do
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Learning to Balance Responsibilities
B. The Way to Give Attention to Study and Part-time Jobs
C. How to Live Well and Independently
D. Reasons that Affect People’s Future
