Brussels, Belgium
Visitors may want to return to the Belgian capital in 2018 to visit two cutting-edge museums. The Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art opened to show contemporary art from around the world.
There’s also the Citroën Cultural Centre, which will launch its first exhibition in May. Thomas Edison received a patent (专利)for his kinetoscope (电影放映机) on August 31, 1887. It was a machine for viewing moving pictures. Edison had hoped to combine his new invention with the phonograph (留声机), which he had invented 10 years earlier. He thought that people would like to watch moving pictures that went along with the sound. He was not able to make them work together. The kinetoscope, however, was a popular attraction by itself. A person looked through small holes in a box-like machine and saw pictures in action. One of the first films made showed a man sneezing.
A problem with this invention was that only one person could view the moving pictures at a time. By 1891, Edison had invented a projector that showed the film on a screen. Many people could watch together.
In 1893, Edison built a motion-picture studio. He made over 300 silent films. Most of them were short. That was because the pictures flashed, or shook a lot. It was hard for people to watch more than 10 minutes at a time.
The first films were mostly of real events. They would show famous people walking somewhere, cars on a street, burning houses, and other news stories. Then comedies and short dramas were made.
Edison's movie studio closed in 1918. By then other companies were also making films. Better cameras were made. Sound was added. Then color came along. Today, movies are among the most popular forms of entertainment.
24. What do we know about the first kinetoscope ?
A. It was a machine to play pictures with sound.
B. It was invented 10 years earlier than phonograph .
C. Many people were able to see films together with it.
D. Only one person could see moving pictures with it at a time.

A. A film player. B. An electric lamp. C. A programme. D. A talking machine.
26. Why were most of the films very short at first?
A. People didn’t like long films.
B. The film stories were really short.
C. The film pictures were not very steady.
D. People could only watch a short time at a time.
27. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. The trouble in making films.
B. Edison’s kinetoscope and film studio.
C. Why Edison invented the phonograph.[]
D. How Edison improved the kinetoscope.

In 1858, two men wanted to be elected United States Senator from Illinois. One was Stephen Douglas. The other was Abraham Lincoln. Douglas was already the Senator, but his term in office was up. Lincoln had once been a U.S. Representative but was then a lawyer in Illinois.
The men agreed to have seven public meetings, or debates, in seven different cities in Illinois. That way, voters all over the state would have a chance to hear what each man stood for.
The first debate was in Ottawa on August 21, 1858. The main thing the men disagreed on was slavery. Douglas believed that as new states joined the union, they should decide for themselves whether or not they wanted to be a slave state or a free state. Lincoln believed that slavery should not spread beyond the states that already had slaves. He said the United States could not survive as half-slave and half-free states.
The debates drew large crowds in all seven cities. People in the entire country were paying attention. Lincoln lost the Senate race. The debates did, however, make him well known everywhere.
In 1860, it was time to elect a new President. Lincoln won the Republican Party's nomination(提名). Douglas won the Democratic Party's nomination. The two men again faced each other to get the people's
votes. This time Lincoln won. He became the nation's 16th President.
The slavery issue was still causing bad feelings between slave and non-slave states. By the time Lincoln took over as President on March 4, 1861, seven states had left the union. A month later, the Civil War began.
28. Why did the two men have debates in seven cities?
A. To protect themselves. B. To persuade each other.
C. To make their views known better. D. To give the voters some advice.
29. What view did Stephen Douglas stick to in the debate?
A. The new states should unite with other states.
B. The new states should separate from the Union.
C. The new states were free to keep slavery or not.
D. The new states should not keep slavery any more.
30. What was the result of the debates?
A. The debates made Lincoln famous.
B. Voters strongly disagreed on slavery.
C. Lincoln failed in the president election.
D. Douglas drew more attention in the country.
31. Why did the civil war break out?
A. The Northern states rose up.
B. Lincoln was defeated in the election.
C. The Southern states still kept slaves.
D. There was conflict between slave and non-slave states.
D
Apps such as Snapchat already give users the ability to add dog ears, colorful hats and other images onto smart phone photos. Virtual(虚拟的)mirrors are a little different. They are designed to let users see what they would look like wearing something that they might want to buy, such as eyeglasses and earrings.
A smart mirror is an app that turns the screen of a smart phone or other mobile device(装置) into a mirror, using its camera. As users look at the image(影像), the app will make it appear as if they are wearing the object. These smart mirror Apps are becoming popular among retail(零售的) businesses,
which want to get people into their stores.
Peter Johnson is with FaceCake Marketing Technologies. He said, “Virtual try-on offers people the ability to try on a great many objects, many more than they would be able to try on if there were no such kind of App.” Recently, Johnson showed how an app called Dangle works. It lets store customers try on different earrings (耳环)without touching a single pair. Dangle can be used on a computer. It uses the app's facial recognition technology to make it appear as if the user is wearing earrings. The earrings in the image appear almost real.
With Dangle, retailers can show customers all of their earrings in a short period of time — something almost impossible without technology. There are other good reasons to use the app. Trying-on goods with the virtual mirror means there is nothing to damage, lose or at risk of being stolen.
Alec Gefrides is with the American technology company Intel. "We always hear about the big store closings," said Gefrides. "But Intel sees technology becoming more important in providing customers with a better experience."
32. What is a virtual mirror?
A. An app making the users more beautiful.
B. An app advising customers to buy what they need.
C. An app adding images onto smart phone photos.
D. An app changing the screen of mobile devices into a mirror.
33. What helps Dangle to provide customers with an almost real experience?
A. The image. B. The virtual mirror app.
C. The screen of mobile devices. D. The facial recognition technology.
34. What can we learn from the text?
A. A virtual mirror app helps sell more goods.
B. Dangle can make customers look different.
C. Expensive objects in the store won’t be stolen.
D. Gefrides thinks virtual mirrors help keep goods secure.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to attract more customers.
B. How to improve retail businesses.
C. The function and benefits of smart mirrors.
D. The importance of customers’ real experience.

W: Oh, so do I! It’s stressful because you have no control.
M: That’s right. Look at this one. This poor boy is sitting in an exam. I think exams are the most stressful. Sometimes you just can’t think of anything to write.
W: Yes, I agree with you there. What about these people here?
M: Mmm... I’m not sure. They seem to be in a hurry, don’t they? I think being late is stressful.
W: That’s true. It can be terrible, especially when you’re late for something important.
M: Like an interview. Look at this picture here: here’s someone in an interview. Do you think interviews are stressful?
W: No. I think they’re quite exciting, a challenge.
M: Oh, I hate interviews.

Today’s London Marathon was won by two men, Chary Handel from Lich and Ian Britton from Auckland, New Zealand, who crossed the finish line just outside Buckingham Palace hand in hand in the time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 16 seconds, five minutes slower than last year’s record time. They had run the whole race side by side. The first woman to finish was 34-year-old Betty Omary from Belfast in 2 hours and 18 minutes. The youngest person to finish so far was 30-year-old Shelly Mortimer from Alcester.
All together, more than 10500 runners took part in the just over 42-kilometer course that started from Greenwich this morning. It is still too early to see how many will actually finish. The organizers say very few runners have dropped out so far, perhaps because of the cold weather. The medical teams had very little to do. There will be a full report on the London Marathon in this evening’s sports report at 7:15 on Radio 2. And now for the rest of the news.
