Halley’s Comet (哈雷彗星) appeared at the time of Mark Twain' s birth, making his arrival an even more special event. Twain said in 1909, “I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it.” Surprisingly enough, Mark Twain died the day after it passed by earth a second time.
Mark Twain was a gifted writer, speaker and humorist whose own characters shone through his work. As his writing grew in popularity, he became a public character in America. As the young country grew in size but not in a cultural manner to the liking of the European people, it became fashionable to criticize(批评)“the ugly American”. Twain travelled to Europe and made the Europeans friendly to America with his wisdom(智慧) and humour.
Twain began his working life as a typesetter at a newspaper, worked as a printer, a riverboat pilot, and then turned to gold mining. When he failed to strike it rich, he turned to journalism and it was during that time that he wrote the short story that started his writing life, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras county.
Although Twain's life as a writer made him rich, his turn as a gentleman investor(投资者) did much to make him impoverished. He lost a great deal of money earned by writing on different investments. Twain recovered financially with the help of a man named Henry Huttleson Rogers. Further success from book sales improved his financial health.
24. What can we learn about Mark Twain from the first paragraph?
A. He saw Halley's Comet coming.
B. He predicted his own death.
C. He made Halley's Comet famous.
D. He knew a lot about Halley's Comet.

A. Mark Twain's true interest. B. Mark Twain's famous work.

Bacteria are an annoying problem for astronauts. The microorganisms(微生物) from our bodies grow uncontrollably on surfaces of the International Space Station, so astronauts spend hours cleaning them up each week. How is NASA overcoming this very tiny big problem? It’s turning to a bunch of high school kids. But not just any kids. It is depending on NASA HUNCH high school classrooms, like the one science teachers Gene Gordon and Donna Himmelberg lead at Fairport High School in Fairport, New York.
HUNCH is designed to connect high school classrooms with NASA engineers. For the past two years, Gordon’s students have been studying ways to kill bacteria in zero gravity, and they think they’re close to a solution(解决方案). “We don’t give the students any breaks. They have to do it just like NASA engineers,” says Florence Gold, a project manager.
“There are no tests,” Gordon says. “There is no graded homework. There almost are no grades, other than ‘Are you working towards your goal?’ Basically, it’s ‘I’ve got to produce this product and then, at the end of year, present it to NASA.’ Engineers come and really do an in-person review, and...it’s not a very nice thing at times. It’s a hard business review of your product.”
Gordon says the HUNCH program has an impact(影响) on college admissions and practical life skills. “These kids are so absorbed in their studies that I just sit back. I don’t teach.” And that annoying bacteria? Gordon says his students are emailing daily with NASA engineers about the problem, readying a workable solution to test in space.
27. What do we know about the bacteria in the International Space Station?
A. They are hard to get rid of. B. They lead to air pollution.
C. They appear in different forms. D. They damage the instruments.
28. What is the purpose of the HUNCH program?
A.To strengthen teacher-student relationships.
B.To sharpen students’ communication skills.
C.To allow students to experience zero gravity.
D.To link space technology with school education.
29. What do the NASA engineers do for the students in the program?
A.Check their product. B. Guide project designs.
C.Adjust work schedules. D.Grade their homework.

第四部分 书面表达。(共40分)
第一节 概要写作
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。(15分)
While many of us go to sleep before midnight, some teenagers choose to stay up much later. They are not driven by the burning desire to write a better essay or achieve a higher grade. Instead, they are busy playing online games. Known as young Internet addicts, they have long been a problem in China. A report released in 2016 by the China Youth Association for Network Development showed that there were over 24 million young Internet addicts among China’s young urban Internet users. The report also said that over 18 million youths had a tendency to develop Internet addiction.
To deal with the problem of Internet addiction among teenagers, the Cyberspace Administration of China has released draft regulations which carried out a ban on online gaming. If the regulations are adopted,under-18s would be banned from playing online games between midnight and 8 am.
As soon as the government’s draft law surfaced, it drew great attention from the public. Some applauded the law as a way to better protect minors (未成年人),saying that too much overnight gaming is harmful to minors’ health and believing the period between midnight and 8 am to be vital to human physical functions. However, others wondered whether it would be practical if it came into effect, as minors could just borrow their parents’ IDs to register accounts to play online games. The Guangming Daily suggested that parents should help their teenagers find a balance between the cyber world and the real world.
China is by no means the only one trying to fight against teenager gaming addiction. Germany introduced a regulation in 2002 in an attempt to stop minors from playing online games from 10 pm to 6 am. Meanwhile, the UK,the US and Australia have forced a rating system on computer games to make sure that teenagers cannot access “adult” content such as violence, sex or bad language.

作文:
Dear students,
I’m writing this letter to call on attention to the lecture concerning garbage classification. Given that most students fail to classify garbage properly though they really try to, our club will organize this lecture in an attempt to guide this deed.
Garbage classification is of great significance. Firstly, not only can it cope with pollution issue effectively but more space originally occupied by wasteland will be spared. Secondly, we can undeniably make a difference by taking advantage of recyclable garbage.
To fulfill your obligation to live an eco-life, come and join in the lecture to be given at 3 p. m. next Sunday on the playground of our school. Only with combined efforts can we make our life better.
Yours,
English club
