When I was a little girl, I remember that when my dad was repairing something, he would ask me to hold the hammer, so we would have time for a conversation with each other. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of his family.
I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days.
Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend.
One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad had forgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Several hours later that day I received a call. My father was in hospital. Immediately I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions(情景) I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and his dreams.
After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. And now he has all my attention every single day.

During the summer holiday, some students might have been busy with traveling, summer camps and all kinds of courses. But a special group of Chinese middle school students decided to taste the hardship of life outside school.
Twelve students in a big city sold vegetables at a local market together. Within 12 days, they made more than 1,500 yuan.
Among them, the oldest is 21 years old, while the youngest is just 10. They are all cousins in a big family and eight of them are from rural areas.
“Compared to traveling, such social practice connects us and makes us learn how tough our parents are,” said Dalin,18, to the City Morning Post. Dalin, a senior high graduate, and her 12-year-old brother Xiaolin came up with the idea.
They learned to work hard to sell their veggies. Every morning they had to wake up at 3 o’clock. Some of them went to the farmer’s market to buy vegetables. Some of them went to the local market to take up a temporary stall (临时摊位). To lower the cost, they learned to bargain (讲价)with the sellers.
At about 6:30 am, they began to sell vegetables. They peddled (吆喝) loudly to attract(吸引)customers. After several days, they got some experience, too.
For example, it was better to put vegetables in order and bigger ones on top. When the vegetables are too heavy, they should give customers an extra plastic bag.
When they finally packed up and went home, they had a small meeting. Everyone took notes and shared their feelings.
“We are tired,” said Dalin. “but we gained a lot”.

These days, more and more Chinese people enjoy sending and receiving messages on the phone. It can help them to get the latest news and communicate with friends. But I think I should read more books besides the textbooks, the more, the better. It can open my eyes and improve my language skills. Of course, it also can help me to get good grades. Do you know how to read more and learn more? Here are some tips for you.
◆ Clear your purpose for reading
Before you start reading, ask yourself why you are reading this book. Most people read for two main reasons, pleasure or knowledge. Clearing about your reading purpose can not only help you choose the books you really need to read, but also remind you why reading the book is important to
you, so you will keep reading and complete the book faster.
◆ Read only what you are interested in
No matter what you are reading, it is important to enjoy what you read. Your friends may tell you the books they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy.
◆ Give up books that you don’t enjoy
You may have chosen books that you are interested in, and they are right to your purpose. But while you are reading them, there may still be some books that you don’t enjoy reading. Whenever you realize that you aren’t enjoying the book you are reading, give it up. Remember reading shouldn’t be a chore (苦差事).
◆ Set a reading goal
It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is that the books I bought don’t have a due date! I don’t need to return those books. Having a reading goal helps you work out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day. Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by.
32. According to the passage, the writer might be a ________.
A. teacher B. student C. doctor D. scientist
33. What should you do when you find the book which you are reading is boring?
A. Keep on reading. B. Set a reading goal.
C. Read the books your friends love. D. Give up the book.
34. The underlined words “due date” mean in Chinese _________.
A. 星期 B. 借期 C. 还期 D. 日期
35. This passage mainly tells us _________.
A. how to read more and learn more B. how to choose a good book

How to Sleep Better
If you’re having trouble getting good sleep through the night (turning, waking up more than once, for example), this text will tell you what you can do to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep.
1. Get up on time. Changing your sleeping time by more than an hour can disturb (干扰) your sleep quality. 36 For example, if you normally wake up at 6 am on weekdays to get to work, you might go to bed around 10 pm, because that’s when you start to feel sleepy, and it’s also a good time to ensure 8 hours of sleep. If, on the weekend, you sleep until 9 am, you probably won’t be able to fall asleep that night until 1 am.
2. 37 Wait at least three hours after dinner before going to sleep. Digestion (消化)slows down while asleep, and a full stomach may interrupt (打搅) sleep. Similarly, you should avoid going to bed on an empty stomach, as a completely empty stomach may equally disturb your sleeping patterns (模式).
3. 38 Exposure (暴露) to light during the time when you’re supposed to be sleeping can disrupt (扰乱) your body’s internal clock. Turn your light off, or use a very dim night light. 39 They include windows, LED clocks, computer lights and cable boxes.
4. Change your sleeping position. You may think that it’s impossible to control what position you sleep in since you don’t fully understand what you are doing, but it is possible and it can make a big difference. 40
A. Try to avoid all sources of light.
B. Keep the room as dark as possible.
C. Make note of unusual circumstances (状况).
D. Be mindful of what you eat or drink before bed.
E. Sleep is considered to be adequate only when there is no daytime sleepiness.
F. In other words, sudden change of sleeping time will affect your “biological (生物的) clock”.
