The Internet has greatly changed the way people communicate. But some teachers think the changes are not all for the better.
Eleanor Johnson, an English professor, thinks that text messaging has made students believe that it is far more acceptable than it actually is to just make terrible spelling and grammatical errors. And she says her students over the past several years have increasingly used less formal English in their writing. Words and phrases like “guy” and “you know” now appear in research papers.
Professor Johnson supposes there is a strong relationship between the rise of informal online communication and an increase in writing mistakes. But she says there may not be much scientific information, at least not yet.
David Crystal, a British linguist(语言学家), says the actively changing nature of the Internet makes it difficult to keep up-to-date in studing its effects. But he believes its influence on language is small. The main effect of the Internet on language is the way it has added to the expressive richness of language, providing language with a new set of communicative tools that haven’t existed in the past.
Erin Jansen is founder of NetLingo.com, an online dictionary of the Internet and text messaging terms. She says the new technology has not changed existing language but has greatly added to its vocabulary. Basically it’s freedom of expression.
And what about those teachers who find these new kinds of mistakes in spelling and grammar in their students’ work? What is her message to them?
Erin Jansen said, “I am always on the students’ side and won’t get angry or upset about that. If it’s helping the kids write more or communicate more, that’s great. That’s what teachers and educators want—to get kids communicating.”
But Erin Jansen and David Crystal agree with Eleanor Johnson on at least one
thing. Teachers need to make sure students understand the uses and rules of language.

When I was in seventh grade, I was a candy striper (护士助手) at a local hospital in my town. I volunteered about 30 to 40 hours a week during the summer.
Most of the time I spent there was with Mr. Gillespie. He never has any visitors, and nobody seemed to care about his condition. I spent many days there holding his hand and talking to him, helping with anything that needed to be done. He became a close friend of mine, even though he responded with only an occasional hold of my hand. Mr. Gillespie was in a coma (昏迷).
I left for a week for a vacation with my parents, and when I came back, Mr. Gillespie was gone. I didn’t have the courage to ask any of the nurses where he was, for fear they might tell me he had died. So with many questions unanswered, I continued to volunteer there through my eighth-grade year.
Several years later, when I was a junior in high school, I was at the gas station when I noticed a familiar face. When I realized who it was, my eyes were filled with tears. He was alive! I got up the nerve to ask him if he was Mr. Gillespie, and if he had been in a coma about five years ago. With an uncertain look on his face, he replied yes. I explained how I knew him, and that I had spent many hours talking to him in the
hospital. His eyes welled up with tears, and he gave me the warmest hug I had ever received.
He began to tell me how, as he lay there comatose (昏睡的), he could hear me talking to him and could feel me holding his hand the whole time. He thought it was an angel, who was there with him. Mr. Gillespie firmly believed that it was my voice and touch that had kept him alive. Then he told me about his life. We exchanged a hug, said our good-byes and went our separate ways.
Although I haven’t seen him since, he fills my heart with joy every day. I know that I made a difference between his life and his death. As importantly, he has made a great difference in my life. I will never forget him and what he did for me: He made me an angel.

Every day, hundreds of thousands of us visit coffee shops. While we drink our
coffee, we may connect our smartphone to the shop’s Wi-Fi network, and keep in touch with friends via services such as Facebook.
As well as socializing, we may use the time and free access to a wireless connection to get on top of our finances. Transferring money from your account to others’ accounts is nothing more than a few taps on your screen.
But what coffee drinkers do not realize is that lurking(潜伏) among their fellow coffee-lovers are bank robbers.
Unknown to you, this modern form of bank robber is silently collecting all your private data. The only sign of his thievery is perhaps a little smile as your bank log-in details appear on his screen.
You’ll only realize when you later go to a cash machine to withdraw some money, and discover that every penny in your account has been cleared out.
The common method for thieves is to use your smartphone’s Wi-Fi connection. They rely on the fact that most of us are not careful about the security of networks we connect to.
For example, when you are in a coffee shop, your smartphone will present you with a list of available Wi-Fi networks that you can use to connect your phone to the Internet. Most of these networks are run by legitimate(合法的)companies, but sometimes they are actually created by a thief sitting nearby with little more than a laptop.
These networks are often given names, such as “Free Public Wi-Fi”, which deceive smartphone users into logging in. On the surface, everything seems normal, and you will be able to connect just as you are with a legitimate Wi-Fi service.

There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the students to grow as people, and to develop their own interests in many subjects.
