His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier. These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.” Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.‎ The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out. ‎ Working—at any age—is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”‎ ‎11. What do we know about John? A. He enjoyed his career and marriage. B. He had few childhood playmates. C. He received little love from his family. D. He was envied by others in his childhood.‎ ‎12. Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as _____. A. a description of personal values and social values B. an analysis of how work was related to competence C. an example for parents’ expectations of their children D. an explanation why some boys grew into happy men ‎13. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by _____. A. recording the boys’ effort in school B. evaluating the men’s mental health C. comparing different sets of scores D. measuring the men’s problem solving ability ‎14. What does the underlined word “sharp” probably mean in Paragraph 4? A. Quick to react. B. Having a thin edge. C. Clear and definite. D. Sudden and rapid.‎ ‎15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Competent adults know more about love than work. B. Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life. C. Love brings more joy to people than work does. D. Independence is the key to one’s success.‎ B Papa, as a son of a dirt-poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on, listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. “There's so much to learn,” he'd say. “Though we're born stupid, only the stupid remain that way.” He was determined that none of his children would be denied an education.‎ Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing each day. Though, as children, we thought this was crazy, it would never have occurred to us to deny Papa a request. And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant, it was never taken lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comment, always to the point.‎ Then came the moment—the time to share the day's new learning.‎ Papa, at the head of the table, would push back his chair and pour a glass of red wine, ready to listen.‎ ‎“Felice,” he'd say, "tell me what you learned today.”‎ ‎“I learned that the population of Nepal is ....”‎ Silence.‎ Papa was thinking about what was said, as if the salvation(拯救) of the world would depend upon it. “The population of Nepal. Hmm. Well…” he’d say. “Get the map; let's see where Nepal is.” And the whole family went on a search for Nepal.‎ This same experience was repeated until each family member had a turn. Dinner ended only after we had a clear understanding of at least half a dozen such facts.‎ As children, we thought very little about these educational wonders. Our family, however, was growing together, sharing experiences and participating in one another's education. And by looking at us, listening to us, respecting our input, affirming our value, giving us a sense of dignity, Papa was unquestionably our most influential teacher.‎ Later during my training as a future teacher, I studied with some of the most famous educators. They were imparting(传授) what Papa had known all along—the value of continual learning. His technique has served me well all my life. Not a single day has been wasted, though I can never tell when knowing the population of Nepal might prove useful.‎ ‎16. What do we know from the first paragraph?‎ A. The author's father was born in a worker's family.‎ B. Those born stupid could not change their life.‎ C. The town elders wanted to learn about the world.‎ D. The poor could hardly afford school education.‎ ‎17. The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to “____________”.‎ A. one new thing B. a request C. the news D. some comment ‎18. It can be learned from the passage that the author ____________.‎ A. enjoyed talking about news B. knew very well about Nepal C. felt regret about those wasted days D. appreciated his father's educational technique ‎19. What is the greatest value of “dinner time” to the author?‎ A. Continual learning. B. Showing talents.‎ C. Family get-together. D. Winning Papa's approval.‎ ‎20. The author's father can be best described as ____________ .‎ A. an educator expert at training future teachers B. a parent insistent on his children's education C. a participant willing to share his knowledge D. a teacher strict about everything his students did C ‎“Did you hear what happened to Adam Last Friday?” Lindsey whispers to Tori.‎ ‎ With her eyes shining, Tori brags, “You bet I did. Sean told me two days ago.”‎ ‎ Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happens to be yours truly, Adam Freedman. I can tell you that what they are saying is (a) not nice and (b) not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren’t very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话). I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group.‎ ‎ An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic---breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out---that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.‎ ‎ If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor(传言)can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don’t. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group.”In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority(优越感).‎ Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do’s and don’ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.‎ ‎ The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have .‎ ‎21. The author uses a conversation at the beginning of the passage to______________ .‎ A. introduce a topic B. present an argument C. describe the characters D. clarify his writing purpose ‎22. An important negative effect of gossip is that it______________.‎ A. breaks up relationships B. embarrasses the listener C. spreads information around D. causes unpleasant experiences ‎23. In the author’s opinion, many people like to gossip because it______________.‎ A. gives them a feeling of pleasure B. helps them to make more friends C. makes them better at telling stories D. enables them to meet important people ‎24. Professor David Wilson thinks that gossip can ______________.‎ A. provide students with written rules B. help people watch their own behaviors C. force school to improve student handbooks D. attract the police’s attention to group behaviors ‎25. What advice does the author give in the passage?‎ A. Never become a gossiper B. Stay away from gossipers C. Don’t let gossip turn into lies D. Think twice before you gossip. ‎ 第二节:选句填空(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ We’ve all experienced peer pressure (同伴压力). It happens to everybody. However, people have different reactions. Confident people refuse to do things they don’t want to do, but shy and anxious people often give in. It may be because they want to be liked. It may be because they worry that their friends will make fun of them, or perhaps they're just curious about trying something new.‎ ‎ 26 .‎ It’s hard being the only one who says no and the question is: how do you do it? 27 . If you think that missing maths, or smoking, or going somewhere you know your parents wouldn’t 'like is a bad idea then the answer is simple: don’t do it. It’s your decision, nobody else’s. You don’t need to be aggressive. You don’t need to shout and scream, but you must be confident and you must be firm. You need to say, “No thanks. I don’t want to do that.”‎ Being on your own against everybody else is very hard, so it can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who will say no too. 28 . You want friends who will support you when you’re in trouble. You don’t want people who will always agree with the majority. Remember, the most popular people aren’t always the most trustworthy.‎ ‎ 29 . You can learn a lot from people your own age. They can teach you great football skills or the best way to do your maths homework. They can recommend music and advise you on fashion. And don’t forget you can tell them things too, and that always feels great. So, find friends who have similar interests. And remember, friendship isn’t about feeling depressed and guilty. 30 . ‎ A. Choose your friends carefully.‎ B. Firstly, you must decide what you believe in.‎ C. It’s about sharing experiences and having fun.‎ D. Of course, peer pressure isn’t completely bad.‎ E. It may be because they were all born to be stubborn.‎ F. Depression and guilt will surely give you peer pressure.‎ G. Whatever the reason, some people end up doing things they really don’t want to.‎ 第三部分:语言知识及应用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节:完形填空 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ My wife and I were attending a wedding at St. John’s Church.
