Hawking was an icon for many reasons, but he will be best remembered for his work in the field of science. Building on German scientist Albert Einstein's work. Hawking explained his belief that space started with the Big Bang, and will end with black holes. This proposal kicked off a series of investigations, including into the origin of the universe itself. "This complex set of law can give us the answers to questions like how did the universe begin," Hawking wrote in his 2010 work The Grand Design. "Where is it going and will it have an end? If so, how will it end?"
His work in science abide, he also managed to overcome many difficulties in his personal life. While studying for a postgraduate degree in cosmology at Cambridge University, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 21. His illness left him paralyzed and he was told he only had a short time to live. However, he went on to become one of the greatest minds the world has ever known. "I felt it was very unfair---why should this happen to me," he wrote in his 2013 memoir. "At the time, I thought my life was over and that I would never realize the potential I felt I had. But now, 50 years later, I can he quietly satisfied with my life."

Something I enjoy doing most in my leisure time is going to the cinema to watch a great film. It's two hours of relaxation and escapism from real life. But when I kick back in my seat to enjoy the film and tuck into (大口吃) my box of popcorn, I'm often irritated by seeing someone next to me texting on their mobile phone or worse still, talking to someone.
It's no surprise that a proposal by a US cinema chain to let people use their phones during some film screenings was met with such anger, that the company had to withdraw the idea. People said it was the worst idea ever! Surely, going to watch the latest film is just that - watching not multi-screening. And if you're out with a friend it seems very antisocial or just rude. I certainly get distracted(分心的) by the click-click on someone's mobile keyboard as they text and the glow of the bright
small phone screen - why aren't they concentrating on the big screen?
But with the availability of streaming films at home and cheap DVDs, cinemas are struggling to keep their customers. Some places now offer comfortable seats with free snacks and drinks so maybe trying to attract a younger audience by allowing the use of mobile phones is the way forward. A survey in 2012found that a majority of 18-to-34-year-olds believed using social media while watching a movie would add to their experience.
However, not every young person wants to multi-task at the movies. Many of us still get annoyed by the theatre staff who appear not to do anything about it. Of course, we could ask the offenders to turn their phones off but as Adam Aron, head of AMC Entertainment, said in Variety magazine, "when you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don't ruin the movie, they hear 'please cut off your left arm above the elbow'. " Clearly this is not what I would like to see but if you want to use your mobile phone in the cinema that I'm at, please don't sit next to me! What do you think is the right thing to do?
'

When talking about colds(感冒), maybe some people say it is very common. It is so embarrassing when they forget to take a handkerchief or tissue along with them.
Want to stay away from colds? Put on a happy face.
Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. It's possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from New York University.
"It seems that positive(积极的) feelings may reduce (减少)the danger of illness," said the study's chief researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this study, Cohen has interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers that they were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.
The results showed that everyone in the study was equally(相等地) likely to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research period, their illness are less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illness and disease. So if you are worried about your health, look on the brighter side more often.

三、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共50.0分)
What is mental health? Mental health is an expression we use every day, so it might surprise you that the term ‘mental health' is frequently misunderstood. (1)
According to the WHO, however, mental health is "a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can deal with the normal stresses of life, can work fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community."
(2)
To make things a bit clearer, some experts have tried coming up with different terms to explain the difference between ‘mental health' and ‘mental health conditions', such as ‘good mental health',‘ mental well-being', and even ‘happiness'. (3)
As a result, some of them have tried to explain the difference by talking about a continuous whole where mental health is at one end of the range while mental health conditions are at the other.
Research shows that high levels of mental health are associated with increased learning, creativity and productivity. (4) In contrast, mental health conditions can cause distress and bad effect on relationships. They are also related to poor physical health and death from suicide.
(5) The fact that someone is not experiencing a mental health condition doesn't necessarily mean his mental health is good. Likewise, it's possible to be diagnosed with a mental health condition while feeling well in many aspects of life.
Briefly, mental health is about being emotionally and socially healthy - the way we think, feel and develop relationships - and not merely the absence of a mental health condition.
A. So instead of being about ‘what's the problem?', it's really about ‘what's going well?'.
B. It is often mistakenly used as a substitute (替代) for mental health conditions.
C. This, however, will help prevent mental health conditions.
