Chinatown around the USA
Chinatown in San Francisco

My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it. I got blisters (水泡) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.
I learned a lot about gardening and collaboration (合作) and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them.
The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie (大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed(除草) it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.
As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project.
That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.
24.What seemed to be the TV directors' first reaction to the garden?
A.They were excited. B.They were surprised.
C.They were worried. D.They were uninterested.
25.What is special about the garden?
A.Weeds were allowed to spread naturally. B.The grass grew, faster than common grass.
C.The seeds came from the plants of a prairie. D.Underground water was used for the plants.
26.What does the underlined word "that" refer to in the last paragraph?
A.We got blisters on our hands. B.Our hard work was worthwhile.
C.The garden would be famous. D.The project would be finished.
27.How did the author feel about the project?
A.Annoyed. B.Curious. C.Proud. D.Regretful.

Kung fu is one of the most popular topics of discussion among foreigners talking about China. As a discipline of kung fu with the largest number of practitioners(实践者) in China, tai chi is gaining popularity worldwide. Tai chi is sweeping the world thanks to its deep cultural roots and the health benefits coming from practicing it.
The philosophy of tai chi features(是...的特点) the concept of yin and yang, which is typical of Confucianism(儒家思想) and Taoism. Tai chi also takes in ideas from traditional Chinese medicine, including anatomy(解剖学) and physiology. It is a practice that connects hardness with softness, and it is a perfect example of traditional Chinese culture.
Through lasting practice, learners begin to feel the positive impact(影响) of tai chi on their health. Unlike other kung fu practice that focuses on attacking and defending against enemies, tai chi focuses more on shaping good characters and keeping fit. By practicing tai chi, people will feel an improvement in their physical and psychological health by developing a balance between yin and yang within their bodies. This is similar to Western medicine’s improving people’s self-healing ability and immune system(免疫系统).
Tai chi is playing an important role in presenting Chinese culture to the rest of the world, acting like a bridge between China and other countries. Recent years have seen a lot of international communication on tai chi. In provinces like Hebei Henan, Shanxi and Shaanxi, where tai chi teaching and learning are particularly active, local governments and non-governmental institutions often organize activities and competitions for learners and fans to attend and participate in. Large
sporting events hosted by China such as the Asian Games and Olympics have featured tai chi performances or contests. These activities have opened a window for the outside world to know more about tai chi, paving the way for its overseas wide spread.
Today, tai chi not only belongs to China, but also to the whole world and to everyone who loves it.
28.Why is tai chi becoming popular around the world according to the passage?
A.Chinese culture spreads quickly. B.Practicing it can prevent all illness.
C.It is easier to practice than other kung fu. D.It has deep cultural roots and health benefits.
29.What does tai chi represent?
A.The ideas of Chinese medicine. B.The traditional Chinese culture.
C.The characteristic of yin and yang. D.A practice of hardness and softness.
30.According to Paragraph 3,tai chi practice is to __________.
A.restore people’s immune system B.help people keep healthy and get good characters
C.defend people’s body from being attacked D.improve people’s self-healing ability
31.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.Tai chi is China’s best event in Asian Games. B.Tai chi is active only in central China.
C.Tai chi furthers cross-culture communication.
D.Tai chi opens a window for people to know about the world.

A team of engineers at Harvard University is trying to create the first robotic fly. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny(微小的) is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.
"The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of its components(组件) is off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own” said Robert Wood, a Harvard engineering professor.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies (相互依赖)on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it is connected to,” said Wood.
While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board(外接的) power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers fields or on the battlefield.(战场) "Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics(技术) and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications(应用).“You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animal, but using these robots instead . he said. "So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives on a day-to-day basis.”
32.What is the typical characteristic of the robotic fly?
A.It's automatic. B.It's controllable. C. It's very small. D.It's quite powerful.
33.We can infer from the passage that the robotic flyer can ______.
A.act as a spy plane B.help do farm work
C.fly at a very high speed D.answer many scientific questions
34.What is Wood's idea about the robotic fly according to the last paragraph?
A.It is highly questionable. B.It has wide practical applications.
C.It gives scientists interest in flying machines. D.It points to a new direction in studying biology.
35.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Harvand's Study in the Field of Insects B.A Breakthrough in Engineering Science
C.An Interesting Invention 一 Robotic Fly D.Robotic Fly 一 a Copy of Real Life Insect

As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.
One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. "Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy gently.
"I am no longer a kid; I won’t play around trees anymore,” the boy replied, "I want toys. I need money to buy them."
"Sorry, but I don't have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money." The boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn't come back after that.
The tree was upset.
One day, the boy returned and the tree was so joyful. "Come and play with me,” the tree said.
"I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?" "Sorry, I don't have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house." So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left with delight.
The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn't appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.

"I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?" "Use my trunk(树干) to build the boat. You can sail and be happy." So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.

Paragraph 1:
Many years later, the boy finally returned. Feeling tired, he went to see the apple tree. At the sight of him, the tree said regretfully:” I’m sorry, boy, but now I no longer have anything for you, no apples, no trunk.” “It doesn’t matter. I have no intention of getting anything from you this time. As you know, I’m getting old and nothing is better than a comfortable place to rest.” said the boy. Hearing this, the tree smiled with relief, adding:” My dying trunk is the right one for you. Please come here and have a seat.” The boy did as told and the tree burst into tears, due to the fact that she could still devote herself to her boy.
Paragraph 2:
The apple tree is our mother. When we are young, she tries her utmost to take care of us and play with us. When we grow up, we leave her for some reason and only come back when necessary or in trouble. But she is always there, waiting for us and ready to offer what she owns without complaint. Never does she ask for rewards, instead, it is our happiness that she desires for. So, try to put ourselves in her shoes and learn to show concern for her.
