Though we usually associate the ancient Egyptian civilization with mummies(木乃伊) and pyramids, ancient Egyptians did come up with a number of inventions. Some of their most outstanding inventions are as follows:
Papyrus(莎草纸)
We owe the invention of paper to the ancient Egyptians who, as early as 3000 BC, had developed a technique of making paper from the papyrus plant that is commonly found along the banks of the Nile. These plants were placed over each other and placed under a weight for a couple of days. The quality of papyrus is clear as they are still complete almost 5,000 years after they were first written on.
Recd pen(芦苇笔)
With the invention of papyrus to write on, it was necessary for the ancient Egyptians to find out how they would write on it. Papyrus sheets were thick and stiff, so the tool that would be used to write with on them had to be hard too. Reed pens were invented by them to serve the purpose. These pens have been recovered from several ancient Egyptian sites, showing how widely they were used during ancient times. These pens date back to the 4th century BC.
Black ink
Of all the inventions by the ancient Egyptians, one of the greatest and most used was the invention of black ink, which was invented in 2980 BC. They mixed soot(煤烟) with vegetable gum and beeswax(树胶和蜂蜡). They replaced soot with other organic materials to make ink of different colors. These mixtures were quite resultful, as the Egyptian documents survive till date, in a full or partially readable condition
Water clock
The Egyptians invented the water clock as early as 1417 BC. It was a stone container with walls and a small hole at the bottom, through which water would fall in small drops at a constant rate.

For most of us, selfies(自拍照) don't usually come from Grandma. And they surely don't come from Grandma on a daily basis. But Linda Merrill isn't your average grandma. Actually, her
granddaughter, Sierra Sessions, describes her as “super rock ‘n’ roll”, and values the selfies that roll in every day, detailing Merrill's daily whereabouts(行踪).
Sessions, now in her 20s, even moved in with Merrill during her anxious teen years. “It probably wasn't the best time, but now we're closer,” Sessions said. “She's one of my best friends.”
Since her grandma's selfies went popular, Sessions has heard from people saying, “I wish I could talk to my grandma again.” “It makes me appreciate every day I get to spend with her, because you never know when they're going to be gone,” said Sessions.
She encourages others who aren't sure how to relate to their own grandparents to look beyond the generation gap(代沟). “Just be yourself!” she said. “A lot (of elderly people) maybe aren't as accepting, but it's worth trying to understand where they come from—talking to them and listening to their stories.”
Sessions appreciates the perspective that talking to Merrill can bring. “She's had a pretty crazy life, and there's not much you can say that's going to surprise her,” she said. Merrill has also helped Sessions be more comfortable keeping it real on social media. “She sends me these photos…she doesn't care that she's in curlers(卷发夹),” said Sessions. “Now, I always post videos or photos of me without makeup and I don't worry about it.”
Sessions has had her own influence on Merrill, too. “We have to tell her to get off her phone because she's obsessed with Facebook and social media!” Sessions said.

“Even if companies are marketing electronic toys as educational, they're not teaching the babies anything at this time,” said a study's author, Anna Sosa. She is a
Northern Arizona University professor who heads the school's Child Speech and Language Lab.
Sosa and her fellow researchers listened to audio(声频的) recordings of parents playing with their babies—aged 10 months to 16 months. The researchers compared the experiences when the children played with electronic toys, traditional toys such as blocks(积木), or when the children looked at books. What they found was that parents talked less with their babies when the babies played with electronic toys. “The parents talked less, responded less and used fewer content specific words,” Sosa said.
Sosa said research showed that how quickly children developed language was often based on what they heard from parents. “When the infants(幼儿) played with electronic toys, parents said little to their children. But with traditional toys, such as blocks, parents shared the names and descriptions of the animals, colors and shapes as their children played. There was even more information given by parents as their babies looked at the pictures in books,” Sosa said. Sosa is not telling parents to throw out electronic toys. But she said parents should look at their infants’ play with such toys as entertainment, not a learning experience.
Toy Industry Association spokeswoman Adrienne Appell responded to the study. She said it was important that parents made time to play with their children. “Playing is a way that kids can learn so much, not only cognitive skills(认知能力), but social and developmental skills,” she said. She added that play should be balanced, including time for just “make believe” activities, as well as traditional and electronic toys.
28. Anna Sosa, the study's author, ______.
A. thinks that electronic toys are not helping babies learn
B. advises parents to play with their infants frequently
C. thinks that traditional toys are much better than books for infants
D. thinks that 10 months to 16 months is the best time for infants to develop language

B. Making comparisons.
C. Providing explanations.
D. Offering analyses
30. When infants play with traditional toys, ________.

D. their parents talk much more with them than when they play with electronic toys
31. What does Adrienne Appell advise parents to do?
A. Buy traditional toys only.
B. Throw out all electronic toys.
C. Play with their children more often.

Don't you just hate it when you have to answer an important phone call and you're
surrounded by potential eavesdroppers(偷听者)? You either have to whisper or go outside to keep the conversation private. Now, a new device(设备) aims to solve this problem by blocking your voice.
Hushme is a high-tech mask that blocks the sound of the wearer's voice. It connects to your phone by Bluetooth. It also comes with a pair of earphones. When you get a private call, all you have to do is put the mask on and it will do the rest. The thick pads(软垫) over your mouth do a good job of blocking your voice. But to ensure nothing gets through, Hushme also features external(外部的) speakers that play a variety of sounds when you speak. The Hushme mask comes in a variety of colors. It can be worn around the neck, like a regular pair of earphones. It attaches in front of your mouth thanks to a couple of very powerful magnets(磁铁). The sound options for covering your voice currently include the wind, ocean, rain, bird, monkey, squirrel, R2D2, laughing Minion and Darth Vader breath, but new ones could be added in the future. While Hushme is promoted as a phone call privacy protection device, you could always use it to protect your ears from loud mouth co-workers at the office. Just put this baby over their mouths and you can go on with your work.
Advertised as the “world's first voice mask for mobile phones”, Hushme was showed at CES(国际消费电子产品展览会), at the beginning of this year. It's not available in the market yet, but its makers plan to start a crowdfunding (众筹) campaign, and to start selling it by the end of the year. Engadget reports that it will cost around $200.
32. The function of the high-tech mask is to________.
A. offer you all kinds of pleasant sounds
B. block your voice to keep calls private
C. protect you from serious air pollution
D. make your voice sound more beautiful
33. We know that Hushme ________.
A. can make any kind of sound
B. connects to your phone by earphones
C. also can keep you away from office noise
D. blocks your voice by the work of powerful magnets
34. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. Consumers can't buy Hushme now.
B. There were no voice masks in the past.
C. CES is a company that produces masks.
D. Engadget will spend $200 buying masks.
