My kids sit in Gee's living room and excitedly lit old New Year decorations out of a
well-loved cardboard box. She tells me that she and Tom built their decoration collection piece by
piece during each year's after-New Year sale. She smiles as we leave with the box.
We first met Tom and Gee in the early days of our marriage, someone had been returning our
garbage cans to the garage each garbage day, and Jim and I had wondered who. Then one day we
spotted him: an elderly man who lived across the street.
I baked cookies and left them on a bench outside the garbage with a thank-you note. When we
got home from work that day, a typed letter had replaced the gift. The letter was from Tom and
explained how he had come to walk the neighborhood on garbage day, returning cans for people he
barely knew. Back where he'd been fighting a war, his young wife, Gee, had found herself living
alone. Neighbors had taken the time to handle her garbage cans so she didn't have to, and he never
forgot. Now he paid it forward by doing the same for all of us. Unfortunately a few years after
we'd moved in, Tom died.
These days, we're piling up boxes of our own. We're planning a move. The house that seemed
so huge six years ago is filled to capacity with furniture and books and toys and, of course, people,
We know it's time to go, and yet we can't seem to stick the For Sale sign up on the grassland.
Gaining a third bedroom and maybe an office sometimes seems like a lousy trade for all we stand
to lose.
It's not just Gee and Tom. It’s the man who lets our kids pick peaches of the tree in his front
yard. It's the ladies who call Jim when their pool filter breaks and leave overflowing baskets for
our kids on Easter. It's the officer who smiles and waves and makes me feel a little safer when Jim
is away. It is they who teach us what it means to be a neighbor.
24. What do we know about the New Year decorations according to paragraph 1?
A. The kids don't like them.
B. Gee is willing to give them to us.
C. Gee sees them as useless now.
D. Gee and Tom made them by themselves.
25. How did the author get to know Tom?
A. Tom lived across the street.
B. Tom liked the cookies the author baked.
C. Tom returned the garbage cans for the author.
D. Tom shared their decorations with the author.

Schools are under constant pressure to make budget cuts, and music programs are often first
on the chopping block. However, a recent study from the University of British Columbia in
Canada has shown that students who took music lessons in high school performed better in
subjects such as English, science, and math.
The researchers collected data from over 100,000 students at public high schools across the
province of British Columbia. Some of them took music lessons during high school while others
never attended them. Checking the test scores of students who took music classes with those of
their peers, the study found that the musicians got higher grades in a range of different school
subjects.
Research like this has been done before, but as for the number of respondents, this study is
much larger, and it took into account other factors that may have affected the results. For example,
perhaps students who took music classes were encouraged to do so because they already had good
grades. This UBC study rules out a number of other factors that could explain why music students
performed better academically, and the researchers still find a clear effect of music lessons on
academic performance.
Not only did music students perform better than non-musicians, but students who played an
instrument did even better than those who sang. “Learning to play a musical instrument and
playing in an ensemble(乐团) is very rewarding,” says Martin Guhn, one of the researchers, “A
student can learn to read music notes, achieve eye-hand-mind coordination, develop keen listening
skills and establish interpersonal relationships.”
What this study doesn't tell us, though, is why music makes these students perform better
academically, but the research paper mentions a few possible explanations. Music practice is
linked with neurological(神经系统的) changes that improves certain brain functions, affecting
memory and planning skills. Besides, there is a possible motivational factor. Students who take
music lessons see a tangible result from practice—they get better—and they might apply that to
their other work. And the non-competitive team aspect of making music together could strengthen
students' social development, which would also help them in other areas.
28. How did the researchers find the result of the research?
A.By conducting tests. B.By analyzing causes.
C.By making comparisons. D.By building models.
29. How is the recent study different from previous ones?
A.It covered more school subjects.
B.It allowed for students who sang.
C.It was carried out nationwide.
D.It produced a more convincing result.
30. Why did the author mention Martin Guhn's words in Paragraph 4?
A.To speak highly of music students.
B.To explain why music helps students perform better.
C.To present the benefits of playing instruments.
D.To encourage students to join an ensemble.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Music practice can make an overall improvement in students’ brain.
B.Progress made in music may motivate students to work harder in math.
C.Singing can’t make any difference in improving students’ memory.
D.Playing in an orchestra could make students less competitive in other fields.
D
Recently, Google announced that its voice-activated program, Google Assistant, will be
offering a new feature called "Tell Me Something Good". Users can now give that command and
receive an earful of positive news stories. What's more, The New York Times has a page online
called "Fixes", which focuses on what people are doing to fight social ills. As media researcher
Karen McIntyre of Virginia Commonwealth University explains, these are all parts of a news
movement called constructive journalism.
Constructive journalism is different from "feel-good news", like a fireman rescuing a cat.
Instead, constructive journalism offers a more complete but appealing version of the news, says
McIntyre. In her opinion, besides focusing on solutions, constructive journalism includes reporting
on the historical and social setting of specific news incidents, using reliable data to look at
longer-term trends, and avoiding interview techniques that create drama without increasing
understanding.
However, newspapers thrive on eyes on the page, and editors may be less interested in
constructive journalism if they aren't convinced that it'll attract their readers. While McIntyre
acknowledges those concerns, research has shown the opposite to be true. For example, one study
found participants who read an online story that focused on approaches to poverty spent more time
on the page than those reading a similar story without focusing on solutions.
There is much we don't know yet about how this kind of journalism affects behavior. The
research is relatively young, though at least one of McIntyre's studies showed an interesting result:
people who read inspiring news stories were more willing afterwards to sign up for generous
actions related to the story, such as donating money to support a cause from the story.
Therefore, she argues, there's a hunger for this type of news.
32. Why are Google Assistant and "Fixes" mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To say how the news movement works.
B. To stress the importance of positive news.
C. To show what constructive journalism is.
D. To lead in the topic of the whole text.

D. are based on interesting facts
34. How should constructive journalism stories be written?
A. In a serious way.
B. In a humorous way.
C. In a usual way.
D. In an understandable way.
35. What may be the problem with constructive journalism?
A. That it isn't appealing to readers.
B. That it isn't easy to collect and edit.
C. That it adds to some editors' concerns.
D. That it is unavailable to some readers.
