He is not nearly as rich or famous as Mare Andreessen, who is the founder of Netscape, or Bill Gates, whose name has become a wellknown word.‎ BernersLee, who works in a small office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the creator of the World Wide Web. The creation of the Web is so important that some people compare BernersLee to Johann Gutenberg, who invented printing by movable type (活字) in the fifteenth century.‎ BernersLee was born in England in 1955. His parents, who helped design the world’s first commercially (商业地) available computer, gave him a great love of mathematics and learning.‎ In 1980, BernersLee went to work at CERN, a physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, where he had a lot of material to learn quickly. He had a poor memory for facts and wanted to find a way to help him keep track of things he couldn’t remember. He invented a software program that allowed him to create a document that had links to other documents. He continued to develop his idea through the 1980s. He wanted to find a way to connect the knowledge and creativity of people all over the world.‎ In 1991, his project became known as the World Wide Web. The number of Internet users started to grow quickly. However, BernersLee is not completely happy with the way the Web has ‎ developed. He thinks it has become a passive tool for so many people, not the tool for creativity that he had imagined.‎ In 1999, BernersLee published a book called Weaving the Web, in which he answers questions he is often asked, "What were you thinking when you invented the Web?" "What do you think of it now?""Where is the Web going to take us in the future?" ‎ ‎4. From Paragraph 1 we can see ____________.‎ A. Tim BernersLee has never heard of Netscape B. What does the underlined word "published" mean?‎ A. Print and send out. B. Buy and offer to others.‎ C. Invent and sell. D. Write and exchange.‎ C If you see a group of kids hitting and abusing an animal, would you stop them? Would you at least call the police? Again people would walk away. Some people do not believe that animal abuse is a big issue.‎ Every day animals are abused in their homes or on the streets. It seems as if politicians do nothing to stop this issue. Everyone is worried about education and global warming. What about animals? We should not ignore them just because they cannot talk to us. Animals, like us humans, have rights. Every living being has the right to warm shelter and good food, but most importantly, they have the right to be wanted and loved. They have the right to be a special, much loved member of their own family.‎ There are many organizations that deal with abused animals or animals that have no home like ASPCA, PETA, the Humane Society and many more. There are organizations that deal with this issue, but that does not mean that we still shouldn’t help. The biggest saying that bothers me ‎ is, "I am only one person. I can’t make a difference." If everyone thought like that, we wouldn’t have the organizations and loving people who help the world every day. By helping one animal, you are making a difference.‎ There are many things you can do right now to help animals around your neighborhood. You can volunteer at your local animal shelter, raise money for animal shelters, inform your community about animal abuse or you can write to your representatives and tell them that animal abuse needs to be taken seriously.‎ As you walk down the street, try to help any animals you see walking around. You can easily buy a cheap box of dry cat or dog food to feed the animals. If we do not help our animals now, we may never have animals again. Always remember that with every step you take, you help save an animal’s life and isn’t that worth fighting for?‎ ‎8. Some people won’t stop kids from abusing animals because ____________. ‎ A. they are too busy to worry about the animals B. they don’t take animal abuse seriously C. they just leave it to the police D. they are afraid of being laughed at ‎9. We can learn from the text that ASPCA ____________. ‎ A. is another name for the Humane Society B. provides shelter for both animals and humans C. deals with such issues as education and global warming D. aims at protecting animals from being abused ‎10. Which of the following statements will the author agree with?‎ A. Dogs have the right to be treated kindly.‎ B. One person cannot possibly make a difference. ‎ C. Cruelty to animals deserves more attention than global warming.‎ D. It is the politicians’ duty to stop animal abuse.‎ ‎11. The main purpose of the text is to ____________. ‎ A. criticize those who abuse animals B. advise people to stop animal abuse C. show how animals are abused D. explain why people abuse animals D Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music ‎ classes to begin with. But without them, students’ academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.‎ Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in math and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by The College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students’ academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.‎ Music programs in public schools also help to add to a student’s sense of pride and selfconfidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, selfconfidence problems, relationship troubles, and choices about drugs and alcohol. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by The Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that students who took part in school music programs were less likely to turn to drugs. Music programs encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.‎ Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries (界限). Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏) with an American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally (口头上) , they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with selfconfidence and common purpose through music.‎ The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.‎ ‎12. Education with music classes could _____________.‎ ‎ A. waste a lot more money from parents ‎ B. help students improve their school work ‎ C. lead to a lot of emotional problems easily ‎ D. have a bad influence on the quality of education ‎13. The two studies seem to show that _____________.‎ A. students with great success attended music lessons B. not all students took part in music lessons C. music plays an important role in students’ success D. students having music classes are better in all lessons ‎14. The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that _____________.‎ A. Japan has a good international relationship with America B. different cultures have different styles of music C. music makes crosscountry communication possible D. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano ‎15. What is the best title for the text?‎ A. Music — a bridge to understanding B. How to get music back C.
