Getting enough sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but according to the National Sleep Foundation, roughly 45 percent of Americans experience poor or insufficient sleep. Well, what we’re all eating could be the part of the problem. Certain foods can ruin a good night’s rest, while others can help promote quality sleep. Here are 4 foods that may be contributing to restless nights.
Heavy, late-night dinners
If you’re saving up all day for a big, filling dinner, you may have a hard time sleeping soundly. This is because your energy shifts to digestion after eating, and especially after eating a larger meal. Eating too much food, no matter what it is, close to bed time makes it hard to sleep since our body is working overtime to digest the big meal, instead of focusing on relaxing into sleep.
Coffee and caffeine after 12 p.m.
Drinking too much caffeine too late in the day can really impair sleep. In fact, caffeine has a very long duration(time) of action and its stimulating effects can last about 12 hours.
Chocolate and certain teas
As mentioned above, caffeine disturbs sleep, whether you think it affects you or not. However, caffeine is not just found in coffee! Having a chocolate dessert after dinner? You might want to rethink that choice!
Water
If you find yourself thirsty in the evening, and then drink a lot of water before bed, you probably make a few bathroom trips in the middle of the night, which has a negative impact on your sleep. Instead of waiting until you physically feel dehydrated (and then drinking too much water at night), put alarms on your phone to remind you to drink water throughout the day.
21. Why is it difficult to sleep soundly after eating too much?
A. Because it is easy to focus on relaxing into sleep.
B. Because a large meal may make you excited.
C. Because it takes a lot of time to digest the big meal.
D. Because your body needs to work overtime.
22. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “impair” in paragraph 3?
A. Protect. B. Affect. C.Help D. Increase.
23. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Drinking water regularly contributes to a good sleep.
B. Caffeine is only found in coffee.
A. You can have a chocolate dessert after dinner before sleeping.
B. You’d better drink more water before sleeping.
21. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Sleeping conditions of Americans.
B. Harmful food.
C. Healthy lifestyles.
D. Four kinds of food contribute to restless nights.
(B)
China has reportedly built the biggest air purification(净化) tower in the world, standing at 100 meters (328 feet). This is particularly good news as China is now faced with serious outdoor air pollution, according to the World Health Organization(WHO).
Another report by WHO warns that air pollution is the biggest environmental risk to health, responsible for one in nine deaths annually worldwide and killing around 3 million people each year. This is only getting worse.
It is reported that the experimental tower is having a positive effect on air quality in the area. Cao Junji, who leads the research on the tower, said, “The tower has no peer in terms of size. The results are quite encouraging.” He said initial(最初的) results looked good, with the tower pumping out 10 million cubic metres (353 million cubic feet) of clean air per day since it was launched last year.
On days when pollution reached critical levels, which more frequently happens in winter when Xi’an relies heavily on coal, the purifying tower brought it down to a moderate(中等的,适度的) level. PM2.5-the fine particles in smog that are most harmful to health-fell 15 percent during heavy pollution on average.
But Junji points out that results aren’t conclusive and testing is still ongoing. The purifying system works by pulling the air inside greenhouses at the base of the tower and heating it via solar energy. The hot air then rises through the tower. At last the hot air passes through layers of cleaning filters and get out.
22. Why is it necessary for China to build the biggest air purification tower?
A. Because China is powerful than before.
A. Because air pollution in China is very serious.
B. Because China has advanced technology.
C. Because China should set an example to the whole world.
21. Which season is the air pollution of Xi’an the worst?
A. Spring. B. Summer. C. Autumn. D. Winter.
22. Which is the right order of purifying air?
a. pull the air inside greenhouses.
b. pass through layers of cleaning filters and get out.
c. heat the air.
d. the hot air rises
A. acdb B.abcd C.acbd D.cabd
23. In which column of a newspaper can we read this passage?
A. Culture. B.Education. C. Environment D. Tourism

China’s airlines have started Wi-Fi service on planes after the country’s aviation authority(民航总局) issued a new document to standardize the use of Personal Equipment Data(PED) devices.
China Eastern Airlines and Hainan Airlines, two giant airlines in China, announced that the use of PEDs will be allowed in flight starting Thursday. Spring Airlines, a low -cost carrier in China, said it plans to allow the use of smartphones on airplane mode on its domestic and international flights starting Feb.1, according to People’s Daily.
PEDs refer to portable electronic devices such as personal computers, tablets, smartphones, and e-readers. Traditionally, the use of such devices was not permitted in flight for fear that they could influence the plane’s communication and navigation systems. But now, passengers can switch to airplane mode and stay connected on the free Wi-Fi service.
This means passengers are now able to use their favorite social networks such as Weibo or WeChat, have a video chat, pay for tax-free products or souvenirs by mobile,
or just surf the Internet.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China(CAAC) issued the guidance to provide more detailed information for evaluation and management. Electronic devices without an airplane mode feature are still not allowed to be used in flight. In addition, PEDs larger than the permitted size are only allowed to be used when there is no turbulence(气流).
Some passengers on the China Eastern Airlines flight complained about the slow Internet speed. A crew member responded that the wireless network is still in a trial phase, The Paper.cn reported. The number of Wi-Fi users is also limited to one hundred.
21. When can Wi-Fi service be used on planes?
A. After PEDs improved in technology.
B. After planes are equipped with some devices.
C. After standards of using PEDs were announced.
D. After factories announced the standards of PEDs.
22. Why was using PEDs forbidden during the flight?
A. It would influence other passengers.
B. It would influence the safety of the flight.
C. It would influence the work of waiters.
D. It would need special equipment.
23. Which one is TRUE about the use of PEDs on planes?
A. Passengers can use Wi-Fi service without any limitation.
B. PEDs without an airplane mode feature can also be used now.
C. Larger electronic devices can be used even when there is turbulence.
D. Passengers can use PEDs to do many things on planes.
24. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. People Can Use Wi-Fi Service on Planes Now.
B. Some Knowledge of the Safety on Planes.
C. Several Famous Airlines in China.
D. The Standards of PEDs on Planes.

More and mare people, especially in developed countries, are becoming older. In the United States there are now over 40 million people aged 65 and over; more than 10 million are over 85. Caring for these senior citizens is becoming a big industry.
Traditionally caring for the elderly has taken place in an extended family. Grandparents live at home and are helped by other family members. However,as more and more young people enter the work force full time, they cannot care for their parents or grandparents any more.
There are more than 10,000 organizations that provide care for the elderly; more than 1,000 were founded last year alone. Ordinary people quit their jobs and start a private care centre, where they offer senior citizens their services.
One of the most difficult aspects of such an organization is finding the right people to do the job. Caring for the elderly is not an easy task. It requires skill and patience. Among daily tasks are preparing meals, giving them a bath, or simply keeping them company. Many care workers quit because they find it very depressing.
It is important to help the elderly stay mobile as long as possible. When they cannot walk or climb stairs they need more help, thus costs become higher. Care workers concentrate on exercises to help them stay mobile.
In many cases assisted living replaces round the clock health care. Elderly people need help with some daily tasks but can mostly live on their own. It also costs less than full nursing care.
While wealthy Americans turn to private care centers, those who are poorer cannot pay for the services because Medicare does not cover it.
Not all countries offer health care provided by the state. In Asia and Africa, for example, older people are cared for by family members.
21. We can infer from the passage_______.
A. caring for the elderly will be a prosperous industry.
B. care organizations have no difficulty finding care workers.
C. medicare will cover health care for the elderly.
D. young people hate looking after their parents and grandparents.
21. From Paragraph 4, we can learn _______.
A. the elderly are grateful for the care workers’ company.
B. care workers are short of working experience.
C. some people are not fit for caring for the elderly.
D. Young people are particular about their work.
22. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Assisted living costs as much as full time nursing care.
B. No people can stand the caring work.
C. Only American government offers health care.
D. In Africa family members look after elderly people.

Guide for Teenagers
The teenage years can be tough, and it’s normal to feel sad every now and then. But if these feelings don’t go away or become so intense that you can’t handle them, you may be suffering from depression. 36
Try not to isolate yourself.
When you’re depressed, you may not feel like seeing anybody or doing anything. Just getting out of bed in the morning can be difficult, but isolating yourself only makes depression worse. 37 Spend time with friends, especially those who are active.
Keep your body healthy.
Making healthy lifestyle choices can do wonders for your mood. Ever heard of a “runners high”? physical activity can be as effective as medications(药物) for depression, so get involved in sports, ride your bike, or take a dance class. Any activity helps! 38 As for food, make sure you’re feeding your mind with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Keep away from alcohol and drugs.
You maybe try drinking or using drugs in an effort to escape from your feelings and get a “mood boost”, even if just for a short time. However, substance use can not only make depression worse, but can cause you to become more depressed. 39
40
Stress and worry can lead to depression. Talk to a teacher if exams or classes seem overwhelming(令人不知所措的). In addition, if you have a health concern you feel you can’t talk to your parents about, see a doctor. A health professional can help you approach your parents and guide you toward appropriate treatment. If you’re dealing with friendship, or family problems, talk to an adult you trust.
A. Ask for help if you are stressed.
B. Even a short walk can be beneficial.
C. Turn to your parents for help.
D. As you get out into the world, you may find yourself feeling better.
E. In short, drinking and taking drugs will make you feel worse--not better-in the long run.
F. The more exercise you do, the healthier you will be.
G. Help is available and you have more power than you think.

M: Oh, hi, Susan. I have been preparing for the final exam of this term. What about you?
W: Me, too. I think I am fully prepared for it now.
M: But I guess I still have a long way to go. I will continue to review tonight.
W: Oh, do you have any plan for the summer vacation?
M: I have no idea. My father said he would take me to Japan.
W: Great. I went there last year and had a very good time. I think it’s better than Italy and France.
M: Where will you go this year?
W: Nowhere. My mother told me to get a part-time job to get some social experience.
M: Good idea. What kind of job would you like to do?
W: I’d prefer to be a waitress in a hotel. I like serving people.
M: You will do a good job.
W: Thank you. And I wish you a good trip to Japan. Bye.
M: Thanks. Bye.

Millions of people like football and thousands of them are good at playing football. However, many very good football players don’t want to become professional athletes. Why? Some of them don’t want to travel. They don’t like to spend time away from their families. Others realize football can be very dangerous and that they can be hurt very badly. However, if you become a champion athlete, then you can make a living by doing something that you love. Some champions, like Kaka, make millions of dollars a year.
Professional athletes usually become famous. Some of them think that this will make them happy, but they sometimes find that they are famous for only a short time. If they become famous, people will watch them all the time and follow them everywhere. This can make life difficult. However some football stars use their fame to help people who are not as lucky as themselves. They hold activities and give their money to schools or poor people. That is really a good thing.
