Scientists recently have found three kinds of very small living things that are living two miles below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea (地中海水面) . Their bodies have many cells(细胞)and look like small umbrellas with legs, but they are animals.
The most exciting thing about these animals, say the scientists, is that they seem to live without oxygen(氧). What scientists have known about life so far is that only single-celled living things can live in places that have no oxygen. These newly-found animals could change that idea.
These animals live in a place where the water is so salty that it can’t mix with the seawater above it. Usually seawater has oxygen in it— which allows animals like fish to live —but the salty waters where they live don’t have oxygen. During three experiments in 1998, 2005 and 2008, scientists found many such small animals at the bottom(底部)of the Mediterranean Sea.
Finding animals down there was so surprising that some scientists couldn’t believe it. Some scientists thought it was just a joke. To find out whether the animals could actually live without oxygen, scientists took up some of these animals from the ocean floor. They placed them in small bottles which have no oxygen inside. To their surprise, these animals appeared to be still alive there after a long time. When the researchers did more tests, they found that some of the animals had eggs—which suggested they even could give birth to their young without oxygen. Finally, scientists found that the insides of the animals appear to be used to living in an environment that has no oxygen.
Now scientists are doing more experiments about these small animals. And if they’re right, they will need to rethink what they know about where animals live.
32. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Life under the ocean. B. The newly-found animals.
C. Animals living without oxygen. D. Experiments about small animals
33. What do the underlined words “that idea” in the second paragraph refer to?
A. The newly-found animals have no cells.
B. There are no living things deep under the sea.
C. The newly-found animals can live in salty water.
D. Only single-celled animals can live without oxygen.
34. There is no oxygen in the water where the newly-found animals live because.
A. the water is very salty B. there is no fish in the water
C. it is mixed with seawater D. it is on the surface of the sea
35. In which part of a newspaper is this passage most likely to be found?
A. Health Report. B. Nature. C. Business News. D. Entertainment.
