Niagara Falls
The Niagara Falls consist of three sections. The large Canadian falls—with their distinctive curved(弧形) shape—are also known as the Horseshoe Falls. They are separated by Goat Island from the American Falls, which are separated from the narrow Bridal Veil Falls by a small island at their south end. Each side of
the falls offers a different view, and it is always best to visit both sides to enrich your experience.
Views of Niagara Falls are free and accessible. Access to the riverside walks and parks offer great views. You can walk across to Goat Island on the bridge on foot.
Cave of the Winds, ☎ +1 716 278-1730. Daily 9 AM-7:30 PM from Spring 2016. A lift takes you 175 feet down to a walkway that leads you right to the bottom of the Bridal Veil Falls. You will definitely get a feel for the true power of the falls! This is the closest you can get to the falls on either side without actually leaping into them! Raincoats and slippers are provided, and you will definitely need them.
Adults: $12; 6-12 year: $8; younger children: Free, but must be 42 inches or taller.
Maid of the Mist. A boat ride, taking you down around the bottom of the falls. Some information is given about the falls, but the real experience is looking up at the falls from below and feeling the mist coming off the falls (hence the name). Wear a raincoat to avoid getting wet. Boats leave from both the American and Canadian sides, so you may want to check the exchange rates to see which will be more cost-effective when you visit! April-October.
The Niagara Gorge Discovery Center. Although it’s easy to enjoy the falls visually, the Discovery Center provides another way to appreciate the magnificence of the falls. Exhibits show the history of the entire area, including the falls, how they were originally formed, and how they've changed over time.
Aquarium of Niagara, 701 Whirlpool St, toll-free: +1 800-500-4609. 9AM-5PM. The aquarium at Niagara Falls. $10.
Niagara Scenic Trolley. Use this to get around the park more quickly if needed. $2 adults/$1 children for the entire day. Hop on and off.
You can combine all these attractions with a Niagara USA Discovery pass for $35, which you can purchase at the attractions.
Must stay a night and see the night view of the Niagara Falls. It is equally beautiful.
During the winter season, a lot of repair work of the falls, tours, and surroundings takes place. Many areas, such as Terrapin Point and Luna Island, are closed due to slippery conditions. Winter brings a different kind of beauty to the falls and a visit during that time is certainly worthwhile, but if you want to experience the full range, plan to come in the warmer months.

Being less than perfectly well-dressed in a business setting can result in a feeling of great discomfort that may well require treatment to avoid. And the sad truth is that “clothing mismatches” on the job can ruin the day of the person who is wearing the inappropriate attire(着装)—and the people with whom he or she comes in contact.
Offices differ when it comes to dress requirements. Some businesses have very high standards
for their employees and set strict guidelines for office attire, while others hold a more relaxed attitude. However, it is always important to remember that no matter what your company’s attitude is regarding what you wear, you are working in a business environment and you should dress properly. Certain attires may be more appropriate for evening wear than for a business meeting, just as shorts and a T-shirt are better suitable for the beach than for an office environment. Your attire should match both your environment and your position. A senior vice president has a different image to keep than that of a secretary or sales assistant. Like it or not, you will be judged by your personal appearance.
This is never more obvious than on “dress-down days”, when what you wear can say more about you than any business suit ever could. In fact, people will pay more attention to what you wear on dress-down days than on “business professional ” days. Thus, when dressing in “business casual” clothes, try to put some good taste into your wardrobe choices, recognize that the “real” definition of business casual(随意)is to dress just one rank(等级) down from what you would normally wear of business-professional attire days.
Remember, there are differences between your career and our social life. You should dress one way for play and another way when you mean business. Always ask yourself where you are going and how other people will be dressed when you get there. Is the final destination the opera, the beach, or the office? Dress properly and you will discover the truth in the principle(原则) that clothes make the man—and the woman. When you are in doubt, it is safe to be on the side of dressing a little more traditionally than the situation demands.
58. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Every company has strict rules about office dress.
B. You should dress according to the business setting even when there are no fixed rules.
C. You can wear whatever you like if your company doesn’t have standards for dressing.
D. In companies with relaxed rules on office dress, you can’t spot a manager among others.
59. Which statement best describes “dress-down days”?
A. We can’t judge a person’s taste by his clothes on dress-down days.
B. People’s clothes on dress-down days don’t receive much attention.
C. People are usually more careful about what they wear on dress-down days than on other occasions.
D. On dress-down days, you can wear whatever you like.
60. Which of the following is NOT the rule in the passage regarding business dress?
A. Remember to ask others for advice when you are not sure about what to dress.
B. For a business meeting and a concert, you should dress differently.
C. Think about how other guests will wear if you are invited to a dinner.
D. Dress a bit traditionally if you are not sure about proper dress for a certain occasion.
61. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The differences between professional and casual dress.
B. A president of a company should dress differently from a secretary or sales assistant.
C. How to dress properly in a business setting.
D. Improper dress will make a person feel uncomfortable.
C
Scientists, psychologists and English academics at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of the classical writers like Shakespeare and Wordsworth has a great effect on the mind, catches the reader’s attention and triggers moments of self-examination.
Using a special machine, they monitored the brain activity of 30 volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T.S. Eliot and others.
In the first part of the research, the brain activity of 30 volunteers was monitored as they read passages from Shakespeare’s plays, including King Lear, Othello, Coriolanus and Macbeth, and again as they read the text rewritten in a simpler form or modern language.
While reading the common texts, normal levels of electrical activity were shown in their brains. When they read the works of Shakespeare, however, the levels of activity jumped because of his use of words which were unfamiliar to them. The result of the test showed that the more challenging passages cause a greater degree of electrical activity in the brain than the common ones.
Scientists went on to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and recorded how it lit up as the readers came across unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentences in the classical works. As a result, this lightening up process of the mind lasted longer than that when volunteers read common texts, encouraging further reading.
The research also found that reading poetry especially increases activity in the right hemisphere(半球) of the brain, an area connected with “autobiographical memory”, driving the readers to think carefully about their own experiences based on what they have read. The academics said this meant the classical works of literature are more useful than self-help books.
Philip Davis, an English professor who has worked on the study in the university’s magnetic resonance center, announced this week: “Classical literature acts like a rocket-booster to the brain, which provides extra power for the brain. You may never imagine how powerful it is. The research shows such kind of literature can create new thoughts and connections in the young and the old.”
62. The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “______”.
A. depends on B. picks up C. sets off D. changes into
63. Which of the following is NOT true about reading classical literature?
A. It makes readers’ brain more active than reading common texts.
B. It makes readers’ electrical activity of brain return to normal.
C. It’s helpful for readers to come up with new ideas.
D. It’s an activity that is suitable for people of all ages.
64. From the research, we can learn that ______.
A. the readers prefer Shakespeare’s works to the other writers’ works
B. the words of classical works make it hard for volunteers to read further
C. reading classical works produces a good and long-lasting effect on the mind
D. poetry increases left-brain activity more than other literary forms
65. What does the author mainly tell us in this passage?
A. Shakespeare’s plays deserve to be read.
B. Common books are unpopular anymore.
C. Poetry is best for developing people’s brain.
D. Classical works help the brain develop better.

Ernest Hemingway was not only an important figure in 20th-century literature, but was also a pack rat. He saved even his old passports and used bullfight tickets, leaving behind one of the longest paper trails(痕迹)of any author.
“Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars,” which opens on Friday at the Morgan Library &
Museum, is the first major museum exhibition devoted to Hemingway and his work. The largest and most interesting part focuses on the 1920s, Hemingway’s Paris years, and reveals(揭示) a writer we might have been in danger of forgetting: Hemingway before he became Hemingway.
The exhibition does not fail to include pictures of the bearded, manly, Hem. He’s shown posing(摆姿势) with some kudu he has just shot in Africa and on the bridge of his beloved fishing boat, the Pilar, with Carlos Gutiérrez, the fisherman who became the model for “The Old Man and the Sea.” But the first photo the viewer sees is a big blowup of a handsome, clean-shaven, 19-year-old standing on sticks. This is from the summer of 1918, when Hemingway was recovering from wounds at the Red Cross hospital in Milan and trying to turn his wartime experiences into stories.
The evidence at this exhibition suggests that, in the early days, he often wrote in pencil, mostly in cheap notebooks but sometimes on whatever paper came to hand. The first draft(草稿) of the short story “Soldier’s Home” was written on sheets he appeared to have torn from a telegraph office. The impression you get is of a young writer caught by inspiration(灵感)and sometimes going ahead without an entirely clear sense of where he is heading.
F. Scott Fitzgerald (some of whose letters with Hemingway is also on view) famously urged him to cut the first two chapters of “The Sun Also Rises,” complaining about the clunky(笨重的)of the beginning, and Hemingway followed his advice. In 1929, in a nine-page penciled critique(批评文章), Fitzgerald also suggested numerous revisions for “A Farewell to Arms.” Hemingway took some of these, but less gratefully, and soon afterwards his friendship with Fitzgerald came to an end.
The papers at the Morgan show a Hemingway who is not always sure of himself. There are running lists of stories he kept making up, and there are lists and lists of possible titles, including the 45 he considered for “Farewell” and 47 different endings for the novel.
In display case after display case, you see Hemingway during his Paris years inventing and reinventing himself, discovering as he goes along just what kind of writer he wants to be. In a moving 1925 letter to his parents, who refused to read “In Our Time,” his second story collection, he writes: “You see I’m trying in all my stories to get the feeling of the actual life across — not just to describe life — or criticize it — but to actually make it alive,so that when you have read something by me you actually experience the thing. You cann’t do this without putting in the bad and the ugly as well as what is beautiful.”
By the time the Second World War broke out, Hemingway had developed into the iconic (标志型的)figure we now remember: Papa. Even J. D. Salinger calls him this. And a noisy and cranky(古怪的) Hemingway appears in 1949 when aboard the Pilar he grabs an old fishing diary and begins writing an angry letter to Harold Ross, the editor of The New Yorker, complaining about Alfred Kazin’s review of “Across the River and Into the Trees,” not, in truth, a very good book. But, Hemingway, often drinking and depressed, didn’t know it, his best work was behind him by then.
66. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined words “a pack rat”?
A. a person who doesn’t waste anything
B. a person who likes to collect rubbish
C. a person who enjoys collecting things
D. a person who cannot be relied on
67. How many of Hemingway’s works are mentioned in this passage?
A. 3 B. 5 C. 6 D. 8
68. We can conclude from the Morgan show that sometimes Hemingway was a person ________.
A. bad-tempered but full of strange habits B. stubborn but full of enthusiasm about love
C. casual but full of heroism D. unconfident but full of inspirations
69. What does the writer truly mean by saying “Hemingway before he became Hemingway”?
A. Hemingway wrote many masterpieces before he killed himself.
B. Hemingway kept exploring the world and adjusting himself before becoming a leading figure in literature.
C. Hemingway was once a war reporter before he became a famous writer.
D. Hemingway devoted all his strengths to writing before he won the Nobel Prize.
70. According to the Morgan show, readers are likely to see ______ in Hemingway’s works.

Do pretty school uniforms lead to early romance?
A technical secondary school in Nanjing, east China’s Jiangsu province, planned to order Korean-style school uniforms for students, but parents opposed the move, believing that the new uniforms looked too good and would encourage early romances among the students, the Jinling Evening Paper reported Monday.
Parents
“My daughter was so excited about the Korean-style uniform, saying it’s her dream to wear mini-skirt to school every day,” a mom surnamed Cheng complained. “My daughter also called her classmates to talk about how handsome the boys looked in the uniform!”
Cheng looked on the Internet and found that most Korean schoolboy uniforms are similar to western suits. “They are so handsome! My daughter is a fan of Korean fashion, that’s why she is crazy about the uniform!” Cheng said. “If the students wear such beautiful uniforms, how can they study well? I prefer the sports wear which makes me think of health and positive thinking.”
School
“The plan to change the current school uniform from sports wear has been cancelled,” an employee of the school told the Jinling Evening Paper.
“The students dislike the present uniform, so the school took advice from the students last November, knowing that most of students prefer Korean-or Japanese-style school uniforms. We know cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou have changed their sports wear school uniforms to more fashionable uniforms,” an employee surnamed Lin said.
“However, we had to stop the plan because many parents are strongly against it. Some parents think it’s just a way for the school to make money, and others think the new uniforms will take students’ attention away from their studies,” Lin said.
When asked about the possibility of problems with early romance between students because of the more fashionable uniforms, Lin said he hadn’t considered it. He, however, agreed that the Korean-style uniform makes the students more charming.
Students
The students are very disappointed about the school’s final decision. They think the sports wear uniforms make them look androgynous (难分性别).
They said the Korean-style uniform has many advantages such as raising interest in class and lifting confidence. It is also considered to be a good way to develop their sense of pride for the school and help then create good temperaments(气质).
As for concerns about romance, the students believe that love is love and bears no relationship to the uniform.
Education department
“We don’t have a unified (统一的) standard for school uniforms. The schools can choose their own styles. Either sports wear or uniforms are ok,” an official from the Nanjing Bureau of Education said.

第六部分:
Friendship is a kind of human relations. When in trouble, we need friends to offer us help, support and encouragement. To achieve success, we also need friends to share our joys. Friendship is also one of the greatest pleasures that we can enjoy.
Knowing how valuable friendship is, we should be very careful in making friends. Real friends are those who have good character, superior ability and kindness of heart. Real friends can share all our sorrows and double all our joys. While making friends, we should take care to select those who have such fine qualities.
Then we should treat our friends sincerely, be careful not to interfere unreasonably with them. We should understand each other even if we disagree or argue. In short, when we have established friendship, we ought to treasure it by means of words and deeds. Only thus can we develop real friendship and keep the sacred lamp of friendship burning all our life.
