1 Unit 7 (B) Thank-you letter Complaint letter Invitation letter In personal letters , words and expressions used in personal letters should be warm, close and friendly, using the first person singular form. In official letters , the content should be formal, polite and proper. Format and Patterns Informal letters : Date, S alutation, B ody, Complimentary closing Signature Formal letters : Heading, Inside address, Salutation Body, Complimentary closing S ignature Thank-you letter A thank –you letter is not necessarily long, but it should be prompt and heartfelt. Apart from expressing you gratitude for having been warmly received or helped, you should also give your appreciation and praise in a thank-you letter. A good thank-you letter should include the content below: Expression of heartfelt thanks for having been received with hospitality, been given nice presents, or been offered timely help, etc. Brief but sincere description of the function, contribution and encouragement, etc. t hese help/gifts may have resulted in. Statements of your gratitude again and your wish of returning the help. A thank-you letter for Christmas present Dec. 23, 2013 Dear Mrs. Carter : John and I have been displaying your Christmas gift with great pleasure and pride. The cups and saucers are exquisite, and we think it was wonderful of you to remember that collecting china is our hobby. Many thanks to you and Mr. Carter for your thoughtful and generous gifts, and our best wishes to you for the next year! Sincerely yours, Carolyn Brewster Complaint letters To have to complain is annoying, but to complain without a good reason will also annoy your correspondent. If you complain, make sure you get your facts right, and if you have to answer an unjustified complaint, be polite and restrained and remember that we all may make mistakes. A good letter of complaint out to provide the following information: State the purpose of the letter clearly. Point out the specific problem without overrating anything.
